We could get more dates but I am worried about overload and not having enough folks turn out for each event to cover the clubs cost. :( If I get a big response to the sign up for all three events I might try to add some. :D

Really stinks that they are on sundays:( , I still hope to make a few trips down south this year, hopefully with a little more luck this time! Still have a few things to do the cobra before she will see track time (rollbar, which I fully stand behind). Hope winter is quick and goes easy on us. Can't wait to see you all again.

Maybe this year we change the course design/layout. I've always wanted to work out some kind of a "victory lap" finish to the whole deal(one lap around the oval).
TonyBolton
12-09-2005, 03:25 PM
Also, we have enough time there for just about anything, we could have different "types" of courses in the same day. Perhaps have the autox part with about 4 or so runs, then change up and do like a "One lap around the oval/best time wins" type of thing. We normally get like 8 or so runs there, but doing a "change up" would be kinda cool. Course would not need messing with to make it happen, either. Just some ideas, and I'd be willing to help any way/shape/forum as well.

Good idea.
As much as I love the 411 events, they are getting a little redundant... maybe at least a course change With a one lap shootout at the end? It wouldn't take long...
Only I think it would be better to do 2 or 3 laps, with the first lap being a "Non-timed warm up".
Maybe break up the cars/groups into race tires and street tires and give trophy's accordingly.
Another good idea.

Just so I understand this, instead of turning down to the infield to finish, taking another entire lap around the oval before turning it? Horsepower won't benefit that?

Just so I understand this, instead of turning down to the infield to finish, taking another entire lap around the oval before turning it?
I think it would be better to do it something like this:
At end of day have everyone line up at our normal place off the track.
One at a time enter track and pass start/finish line accelerating.
Counterclockwise around the oval and pass start/finish again (warm up).
Drop hammer and one or two more times around (timed laps).
Horsepower won't benefit that?
Eh... horsepower-smorsepower. I just think it would be a blast to go all out for a couple of laps on the banked oval. Be it in a viper or a van, whatever.

Brett,
At Lanier, we take a 3/4 lap to get up to speed, 2 full hot laps and then 1/2+ lap to slow down and get off the track.
At 411, if timers are setup at Drag strip side of oval, you could enter at normal gate giving 3/4 lap to get up to speed. 2 full hot laps and after crossing the start finish, you've got 3/4 of a lap to slow down and exit through normal exit gate. Any more laps and tire temps and oil cavitating/gravitating? become an issue. It's amazing how fast you can go if you hit the turns right. Jason (Ragtop03) had a sub 17 second run which is an AVERAGE speed of approx 80mph on the same size track (Lanier has LESS bank but better surface). It's intense! If you suffer from vertigo, it's not recommended :D

As with most events, track time is directly related to the number of entries. Held true for us. With only 15 cars, it was pretty much, keep going out until you get dizzy. With 2 drivers, Jason's Vette saw a lot of action
At 411, a 2 hot lap format mentioned above will take slightly less time as an Auto-X run, plus you can get more cars through on the oval runs because there are no stinkin' cones to pickup or course workers to worry about. We also found eliminating a long lunch break (since we rent the track by the hour), was condusive to a bunch more track time.
Rick...morning AutoX - afternoon Oval action? Combined scores competition?

Rather is be dragstrip, car show, or AX....so i have no idea what the deal is. Think you could shine a light on this?
Or really...anyone else for that matter too....
Thanx all :D

There are always loner helmets at the event - no charge. Don't let not owning a helmet be the only thing that keeps you away. The SCMC folks wil have you (and your head) covered if you show up without one.

Oh you have not meet the AARP Taxi Cab Squad yet have you!!
You are in for a real treat. We have several Impala SS and other Chevrolet B-body cars that run at 411 with us. Because of their four doored width and weight challenged cars they are nicknamed the Taxi Squad. Don't let looks fool you they are quicker than you might think!! I would not advise making any bets with these guys at the AX or next door at the dragstrip!!:D

Just for reference, here is a link to a video from last year showing Hazman in his 97 Cobra Vert, Jason in his 03 C5 Vert, and 2 taxi cabs running 411. The video is shot so that you can compare the runs between the 4 cars. The LeadSSled on race tires is in the bottom right. The Impala on the bottom left (budjrfan) is on street tires.

Will we have access to the dragstrip on the same day? I'll be there on June 25th.
Well, sorta. The strip is open only during the afternoon on Sundays. Since these are all Sunday events this year, the dragstrip will be running the same time we are running. So, in order to run there, you would be not able to run the autocross.
If there was a Saturday date, you could autocross in the afternoon and go next door to run the dragstrip in the evening. But, there are no Saturday dates this year. However, you could run at the strip the night before the event.

No pre-registration is required for the dragstrip. It's just a normal Saturday for them. They open at Noon on Saturdays and run till dark. They will stay open later after it warms up, but will close early for the April date. $12 to run test and tune on Saturday.

Always a great bunch to be around. A small group at 30, opposed to what i'm used to in the ETR SCCA, but it's great that you can talk to alota people there and get to see them run too!
From what I remember from gazing over the scoreboard's, it looked like most people were getting shorter times as the day progressed, and thats really what it's all about. Since there are no classes for cars, or modifaction to the cars, you really need to just worry about competing with yourself and not the guy behind you, in front of you, or in the other group. If you can collect yourself enough to drop your time through-out the day, then it's you that won, not the guy with the fastest time of the day.
It's always fun to get out there and let the car BREEEEEEEEEEAAAAAATHE out there on the track, as opposed to normal autox type events. I like the parking lot autox's, but every dog likes a dessert now and then. ;)
Thanks again to all that stopped and congratulated me, talked to me or even acknowledged my existence. Special thanks goes to Rick McNutt that didn't even run a car today, but was gracious enough to put this whole event on.
I'm reminded of a saying I heard from an old car show I watched when I was a kid........... "In a world where crimanals operate above and beyond the law.....one man.....CAN......make a difference."---Knight Rider ;)

Well, I just wanted to take a few seconds to thank everybody for letting us ohio folk run with ya'll. We had a fricken black once again. I can't say thanks enough to Rick and Jane for putting up the ohio group, and even feeding us some really good food. Overall it was a great weekend. Got a great tune from Dan at Pro-Dyno:rotf: , got a sweet roll-bar installed in the new cobra:D , and dropped over 8 second with the new car over my previous best, with hitting a fricken cone. No I really can't wait to get 4 good tires, and lot more seat time, and see how i can improve even more.:bounce: Had a great time, and hopefully will be down at least one more time this year, with a few different buckeye drivers. Take it easy until then, and thanks again everybody!
Oh yeah, the pics over on HPT's are fricken great. Just wish there were some vids of the cobra's! No fun watching all the vids, and not getting to hear a little eaton scream!

Tony, you rock! Simply amazing watching you tear up the course.
A big congratulations to Kelly for a superb day in the Taxi and showing us how it's supposed to be done. Great driving my friend!
Rick + Jayne...sorry I missed you guys on the way out, but I'll see you in a few weeks at TGP. But be forewarned....a new sound will be coming from under the hood and no, it won't be the power steering pump going out ;).

Coming from someone local that trailered in their queen while I drove 400 miles???? Not much ground to stand on. I thought guys trailer their cars when they worry about it breaking down at the track :rotf:
Heck, I did the dragon on the way home...had to be close to 5,000 pounds with all my race tires in the trunk and had a blast.

Heck, I did the dragon on the way home...had to be close to 5,000 pounds with all my race tires in the trunk and had a blast. I have no other way to get my car to the track with the tires. I could drive my car up there, have the girl drive the truck with the tires IN the truck and change them at the event if you would like? If you recall, I at one time drove my car there with a tow bar, and a small 48" trailer with my tires on that. I consider the full car hauler a luxury, not a necessity.
I'm right at 1 hour away from the track, and I don't feel like using up tire just to drive there and back.

I dunno.....I'm likin' my 97 GMC 2500 pretty darn good. It is in all honesty, becoming one the best vehicles I have ever purchased. My first GM purchase too. Even with 50,000 more miles on it than the same year F150 I had, it is alot better. I may've just had a "dud", but I hope I see the day that the truck gets the 383 shortblock and a ProCharger. :)

Rick, I have to agree. I'm not one to make as much noise as Terry...w/cutouts open ;), but I have to say that only 3 competition runs (original track config) last time out was not enough. I realize that the track stayed open for a few more runs, but the competion was over at that point.
There were a few 411s last year that we got 6-9 runs to perfect our times. It's a long haul for me and I've really enjoyed the event. I'd like to know that I've got a few more chances to improve my times and shut Mr. Murray up :) The June event is too close to our Nationals so I plan to make it to the last 411 event of the year and hope to get a few more runs.
Also really looking forward to TGP...where I'll introduce you to my new friend...Mr. Procharger :)...Install almost completed...then some tuning...then some real fun learning how to keep the rear wheels from spinning!!

Yeah, I feel more and more comfortable everytime I finish an event. I ran in a SCCA drivers school last weekend, and it was a blast. I got close to 9 runs in the morning and 6 in the afternoon, with a instructor. It was really nice to have a passenger, who is a great driver, and a really good teacher to be able to point out your mistakes, and give good tips on improving. My times dropped all day long, plus I was feeling more and more comfortable and in tune with the car by the end of the day. Can't wait to get back down there and and shave a few more seconds off!:D

Soon enough you'll be able to get in the car and just block all noises out and just FEEL the car, instead of listening to the motor/tires. I further aid this by playing a song on the radio that I am familiar with(know the words or whatever)while running. It helps keep me in the groove, so to speak. Autocross may not be that fun to some, or even seem beneficial, but you hafta be able to be fast at slow speeds, before you can be fast at fast speeds. Like I told Brett, "You're trying to ROAD RACE/OPEN TRACK here, you need to start autocrossing it!" Road racers make bad autocrossers, but good autocrossers make good road racers. ;)

Like I told Brett, "You're trying to ROAD RACE/OPEN TRACK here, you need to start autocrossing it!" Good point. When I was trying to carry max speed everywhere, I was spinning all over the place. This last time I really started paying more attention to the line I was taking coming out of the corners and I was only 1 second behind where I finished last year on sticky tires.

For anyone wanting MORE PRACTICE at this track, the PCA(Porsche Club of America)will be running there June 11th.
Link: http://etrscca.org/sccaforum/viewtopic.php?t=2009
The PCA guys are a good bunch, and normally have a low turnout(like 20), so there will be MORE than enough runs to be had.
I'm still undecided on which event i'll run that day, the PCA event, or our local autocross up at the Knoxville Smokies Stadium.

Cost ain't to bad neitha' ;)
I mainly like the fast pace of the course and just the over all "laid-back-ness" at these events. You don't have 50 "newbies/one hit wonders" runnin' around and what not. It's mainly guys/girls who already are familiar with their car and want to educate themselves further on how to drive.

Shoot...this is getting ugly, it might be worth the drive down just to watch this play out. A few Z06's, and a little white pony:D
I think my money is still with the blue oval;)

I think my money is still with the blue oval;) The white Pony will be looking for 59's this outting....given the track is the same. Same horsepower(241), but a lil' more suspension underneath.

I honestly think that with C6 on the Hoosier's, and Shawns C5 on the Hoosier's.......it's all up for grabs. Also, if this "TYLER HAMILTON" and "RUSS BUCKNER" show up, there is gonna come down to some real close TENTHS of a second. Another wildcard is Ed Oblow in his 99 Porsche. I got to see this car run at the PCA event and with Ed finally getting some seat time in it, he could be a force to be contended with. That is, as long as he puts down a cone-free run.
I don't think i'll get 59.999, but the car felt unreal out there on the track this time. On my last 61.1 run, I know I left some time out there.....in at LEAST 3 different spots.:doubt::( I wouldn't rule 60's outta the question.
