These are the track rules of which we will have to abide by. There are other rules but that is mostly for the club to make sure everyone abides by. These additional rules will be gone over with the participants during the Saturday morning event meeting.

We will have both on line payment and a hard copy registration form. Please be patient as we get the event registration forms made up, thanks.

I see there's a Ford show, too. B/C I sold my Fox body and bought a MINI, don't want to crash the party...maybe I'll join the Miata guys, they're more my size these days! :baby:

Dave,

The open track portion is open to any type vehicle not just Fords. The show is to get more members there that may not like open tracking but want to come out and have some fun, too.

You are going to CMP with us so you pay less than a member who isn't and you have priority status for this event. I wouldn't let the show stop you from going, especially since it just $275.00 for the weekend for CMP participants. Where else can you pay so little for VIR? Bring more minis with you and we'll try our best to keep you all in one group like CMP.

Hi:

I've been reading the posts on the SCMC website for a while and finally decided to register today when I saw the VIR event

I have a couple of quick questions on the event: is there a way to register for just Saturday only? If so, how much would just one day cost? Second, is there a minimum age for drivers? I have a son who would be interested in attending as well... And, along with that, will there be instructors available?

Thank you very much! If the answers fall the way I hope they do, we'll join SCMC and sign up for VIR right after!

Warmest Regards,
Scott

Enabled,

Registration forms aren't officially out yet but should be shortly in a week or so.

Thunder,

If both you and your son are going you can sign up for one day each. Your son must be over 16 in order to run on the track. There will be instructors for this event just like our CMP event.

If you own an SVT Cobra or a Shelby GT500 then we welcome you to become an "official" SCMC member whether you chose to go or not go to our VIR event. :) We do not have forced membership, you can attend our events whether you are a member or not but membersip does have its benefits.

Thanks for the reply! What would the Saturday-only portion cost per person for members? for non-members?

As for cars, I own a '97 GT with a Lightning engine in it :D and my son owns a '96 Cobra, so we'd definitely be interested in joining...

Thanks,
Scott

Will we be able to pay for the full course on line?

Will running the full course pretty much be an extra 30 min of track time added on to the full weekend. Or will the people who don't run the full course miss out on 30 of track time? I am kind of up in the air, I really would like the experience of running the full course, but I will be new to VIR, and would need an instructor during that time period.

Yes, it will be an extra 30 minutes over your normal track time. You will not miss out on any track time as this is in addition to your daily track time. We will have instructors for you Newbies. This is my first time at VIR too, but I'm not going to let that stop me from running 3.2 miles for 10 laps! :bounce: :bounce:

Tony,

I've put posts on two NC MINI boards, and a NC enthusiast board to see if we can get a few of us out there, so you guys have something to swat at besides gnats and flies! ;)

You guys put on a great event and this is a great track, for me it's just a matter of convincing the wifey I should get off the porch and run with the big dogs--okay watch them go by...instead of spending time on our remodel.

I'm also rousting all my Ford buddies from Full Throttle Stangs and the like...

Thanks Dave! I really felt like I was in the middle of the "Italian Job" when you guys were out on the track. Makes me want to go out and get a Mini just to run with y'all! Daniel at work has a silver one and he hated he missed CMP but work is killer for him as he has to work every friggin night and that sucks!

I was hoping y'all would get enough cars just to have your own run group and everyone could watch y'all run track. All help is greatly appreciated and I'm glad y'all enjoyed our CMP event.

I hate doing events in the heat but I'd rather run open track in the heat then work in the yard... :rotf:

Lets see, where have I been, lets just say life got in the way for a little while! Was planning on being at CMP in March, but did not make it due to being in a car accident at the end of January! Fractured a couple of ribs, and they are finally healed up, I can say that the Ford Freestyle is a very safe car! I tried to avoid a Deer and wound up going off road and taking out a telephone pole. Should have hit the Deer!

Also my oldest son got married the 5th of May, youngest son in college, and daughter getting married in December! So the race budget has been dialed back a little bit! :(

I am working on being at VIR, after all Fathers Day is coming up and it would make a great Fathers Day Gift (hint to kids if they read this post) :bounce:

Hopefully I will have everything in place by the first of the week!

For those of you that wanted to know, there will be camping over the weekend. You will have to pay the track direct the sum of $50.00 if you are bringing in a camper or if you have a tent then it is $35.00. Again, you pay the track direct and not the club. As a courtesy, SCMC will be providing the overnight security for the weekend event.

About concessions...we will have to go to the North Paddock to get lunch but there a few vending machines at the south course tower for during the event drinks. Going to the North Course will allow you to have a wider variety of menu choices rather than just a couple. The track will shut down for 1 hour each day for lunch. Sunday's lunch time is a mandatory 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. They also offer a $12.00 buffet in the North Course Tower if that interests you?

It will be hot, you will be hot, you will be sweaty and you will need plenty of fluids to keep you going. Bring plenty of drinks with you and food to keep your energy up. The club trailer is air conditioned, it will be on full force if you get over heated for you to take a break. We'll have some coolers of drinks ready for club workers but don't count on it all day long as it is difficult to determine how much is enough.

The event is filling up and try to remember the 14th is the last day for early registration, after that, the cost goes up $30.00 for the weekend and per day fees.

Remember that if you are in the car show, you can do parade laps during lunch as part of your entry fee.

List Updated!

Group D will have "mandatory" instructors all day Saturday and will continue to do so until they are signed off and approved by their instructor and then by our lead instructor, Garry Talbert.

Group C will have a "mandatory" instructor for no less than two run sessions on Saturday to get you better acquainted with the track. After that, it is between you and the instructor to determine if they should be with you longer. Most people in Group C have been to other OT events and have already been signed off but will still need some pointers to get around the track quicker.

Group B will not have any instructors assigned to them. If someone wants one in that group, they will have to request it and we'll do the best we can to get them one during the course of the weekend.

Group A - Instructor or highly skilled driver group

One of the reasons our events are popular is because of the amount of track time you receive during the course of the weekend. You will get 1.85 hours of track time on Saturday and 2.0 hours on Sunday.

We do not care what type of vehicle you own, as long as it is safe then we welcome you to come out and enjoy our event. :) (We had a 350Z at our CMP event last year.)

Definately need some pointers, never can learn enough. Looking forward to a GREAT weekend. I think we are even bringing the motorhome up so we can just stay there. See everyone soon!!

Bill...you looked really good out there in the 350Z. The person with the Camaro must have had a 383 stroker because he was killing everyone he saw on the track.

I've decided that in order to make up for my driver shortcomings, I need "mo power" so I at least won't be killed on the straights. The best my 94 would do is 120 mph on the front straight and I never actually reached that, but I did reach 118 and I felt I could have gotten the other 2 mph if I had held it there a tad longer. On the back straight I could hit 85-90 mph before I was entering Oak Tree.

It was a lot of fun this weekend and my car did pretty good considering I haven't driven it a lot. Maybe I need to start working on a 392 stroker motor for when my 302 gives up the ghost? I also need more seat time and a better seat then my stock seat because I still slide around too much when I am on track. Any recommendations??

I am also still trying to recoup from the weekend's event. I could hardly go at work today and feel completely drained. 3.5 hours on the track this weekend has taken a toll on the old bod! :D

the south course was alot of fun, and anyone who thought it was going to be less than exciting was pleasantly surprised! :D the weather was great - even the rain late saturday was OK since it cooled off a bit afterwards ;)

I was hitting 140 or so on the front stretch pretty consistantly, and I knew that I was lifting and braking too soon at the 5 marker....not being able to see above the crest of the hill was a bit intimidating  and I know I can gain some more speed on the back stretch also, and did find alot of speed between 10 and oak tree by sunday afternoon....

We had a great time. Many thanks to Tony, and all the instructors for a smooth well run event and for allowing the taxi to run with the club. Thanks to Rick and Jane for the tip on route 29. My ABS decided to quit while braking for turn 1 and that slowed me down since the rear wheels like to lock up without it but I was still able to hit 120 with the new motor and that was coasting up the hill to # 1. ;)

Thanks to all who planed and ran the event. I think it ran very smooth. My car ran great. I was hitting 100-110mph on back stretch before oak tree turn. I ran 140-145mph on front just about every time. 2-3 times I saw 150mph. By Sun I had cooked the brakes...bent front rotators and very little pads left:( . I had a great time and am looking forward to the next open track event:bounce: . I'm a open track junkie for sure.:headbang:Correction on the speed. I forgot I had new low profile tires. Just did a speed check against my gps. Seepodmeter is about 10mph off. Was running 90-100mph on back straight and about 130-135mph on front. 2-3 times saw 140. I feel the need for speed. I'm hooked.

Great time, great group of people, and great instructors and I felt the Cadi held it's own on track with all the little lite cars. The trip home went smoothly and can't wait to do something again with the group.

Chris
The return trip was smooth. Thanks again to everybody. Hanging with the group of people just gets better everytime I see everybody. Had a fricken blast in the new mystic, car performed great, blew away my expectations. Now just need to continue improving the driver mod!

thank you again!! what a weekend saver you were!!! however, we did all that brake work on my friends Cobra first run out Sunday he blew a vacuum hose off, long story short, he didn't make it back out that day. We bled my Nissan and wow what a difference it made on Sunday. I was a lot harder on my brakes then the day before and never did get any brake fade. Thanks again because otherwise I would have had a lot shorter weekend!!!

That is just fine for the Neon.

Main issue is you drove the car home and had a smile on your face!

Nice job Tony and crew. A very well run and safe event that stayed on time. I hope folks appreciate the effort that goes into making these things happen. We certainly do.

Thanks Rex! It means a lot when people show their gratitude to me personally and the rest of the organizers for any SCMC event.

I have to give a lot of credit to the following people though as they made me look good last weekend:

Burke Dawson - He implemented the organization for event packets and tees.

Dave Stanfield - Helped Burke with registration and event organization.

Rich Riley - Manned the club trailer and assisted with the car show. :rotf:

Bill & Binky Dangerfield - Manned the club trailer & assisted with the car show

Garry Talbert - Lead Instructor who is a very talented driver & a smart individual.

Allan Scott & Mike Boyle - Took photos of the event and posted them up.

Scott Whitehead - This guy is very talented and everyone that comes to our events brags on him a lot. I don't tell him though...just in case, you know? :) Numerous students have come up to me and told me they wish they could have him do classroom all of the time and that they enjoy listening and learning from him! He is a very sharp individual who gives without asking for anything in return and is extremely knowledgeable about our cars (He's an ex-Ford engineer.)

SCMC Event Instructors - These guys are very talented and brave I might add! They have nerves of steel and I respect the job they do because I'm not so sure I could do it.

VIR Staff - They made us look like professionals when they are the professionals. When you have a professional staff, everything seems to fall into place.

I did learn a lot from this event especially since this was our first time at this track. We had a couple of hiccups during the course of the weekend, but over all it do go rather smoothly. Here's what we will fix for next year's VIR event.

1. Instead of eating out on Saturday night, we'll all just have a meal on the premises in the banquet hall.

2. We will try to organize our morning meeting a little better but keep it like we did to an hour. I thought the 7:30 start time was better then the 8:00 a.m.

Those were the only two constructive comments I had about the weekend and they are both an easy fix for us. We are definitely getting better at it.

anybody remember the name of the book that Scott mentioned in class. I had seen a advertisement prior to that weekend but still not sure where i saw it or the name of it. I remember it was some instructors that had wrote the book and cheapest place to find it was on amazon...doh what was the name!?!?!?!?!?

I think it was "going faster", but I'm not sure.

You are correct. The complete title is "Going Faster! - Mastering the Art of Race Driving". The best price I've found recently is Amazon.com. Here's a direct link to their page about this book (http://www.amazon.com/Going-Faster-Mastering-Race-Driving/dp/0837602262/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-6620024-3952860?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184078908&sr=8-1). I've found that the easy layout and good readability of this book make it excellent for beginner and experienced drivers, and I've even found that it can be a very good read for expert drivers, because it's so good at clarifying concepts and putting into words what an experienced driver already intuitively knows. I'd recommend this book to just about anyone at any experiece level.

As I mentioned in the classroom, the DVD they sell (which I am assuming is the same as the old VHS version I have at home) is not bad, but I'd rather have the book. If money is not an issue, watching the DVD certainly is not a waste of time. While it benefits from the extra clarity that a video can bring, it cuts out a lot of content for the sake of time.

While I'm talking about books, I'll mention one other book (or in this case, series of books). Carroll Smith's 5-book "-to-win" series is among the best in the business. Anyone who is responsible for the maintanence and upkeep of their own track or race car should read all five of these books cover to cover. While parts of the series are very technical (live several sections on metalurgy) and other sections are not as relevant (like the one on finding major sponsorship in DRIVE-TO-WIN), the majority of this series is simply fantastic. I had the opportunity to work with Carroll several times over the years, and no race engineer anywhere carries more of my respect than he did. RIP Carroll.

Thank you very much for the kind words Tony, but unfortunately, now I need to go buy a bigger helmet! :D

Any recommendations?? cobrabitn 07-02-2007

All your Cobra needs is a coat of Crystal White paint :D . Dean Smeltzer (SCMC member and American Iron racer) rode with me at Road America a couple of years ago for some coaching around the track. I thought I was cutting some pretty quick laps until I looked at Dean and realized he was almost asleep. After completing the session he gave me some good pointers, but the best advice came after asking him what mods I should do next on the Cobra. His answer was none; just drive the car.

As for a new seat for your Cobra talk to Mark Wilson; 248-896-3046.

^^^^^ great advice! dean is one of those "naturals" when it comes to driving....a few years ago, he drove my 2000R at gingerman with me as passenger, and I saw alot of places that he braked deeper, got on the gas quicker, cornered faster, etc....and he wasnt even pushing the car! well not too much since the tires were very tired :D and completely corded after that session! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: the same goes for thomas moran, who did the same for me at mid-america....riding along with a good driver helps incredibly....same with seat time....

I second mark wilson as an excellent source for seats and most any other part or mod....

I agree with the above about the seat and where to buy it. Tony, a 4pt roll bar and belts are a must if you do the seat. You looked a lot better out there Tony. We give each other a lot of crap but you are definitly improving.

I already have the 4 point roll bar in the car. I just need a better fitting seat but I wanted a pair of the same kind so they still look decent to use out on the street once I get my tags for the car.
