Maybe this is just temporary and it won't be so heavily patrolled in October. I really think they are mostly looking for motorcycles because there has been so many accidents. We saw our share of THP yesterday too, but it was because there was a biker ralley in one of the small towns there.

well, I don't think it will be temporary, but hopefully it will. That Hwy in NC sounds like a good one to try. Of course, you would need to go through the dragon to get to it:D

Every year it is the same thing with the Dragon and usually by October things have simmered down. :D

No, It's way worse this year. I was up there a couple of weekends ago, and there are troopers everywhere. Driving up and down the dragon, radaring ON the dragon in the damnest places you could imagine... hiding around blind curves, troopers only 1/10 of a mile apart, etc.

I counted 14 cops radaring off on the side of the road ON the dragon just on the way up!. It's complete saturation!

ONE mph over the limit, you're ticketed. TOUCH the centerline or shoulderline with your wheel, you're ticketed. Motorcycylists with only one hand on the handlebar or anything whatsoever wrong with the bike, ticketed.

So basically... the Dragon is ruined until Nov/Dec.

The only time you can go now and not be harassed is way after dark. A Knoxville area "midnight club" has already developed. Tuesdays and Wednesdays I hear aren't too bad also.

I recommend you guys plan on a midnight run. Otherwise it's about as fun as riding in a Nazi-cop parade. It's only a matter of time before they shut it down, that or put speed bumps every 100 feet.

Thank all of the dimwit inexperienced bikers from flat places like Florida and the midwest that think they know how to ride a crotch rocket.

The dragon shows them painfully, and sometimes fatally, that they can't.

Sorry for the bad news, I just thought I'd give you the heads-up.

Yeah, one of our members that went with us on our Blue Ridge cruise went back with his son on the same route and got to talk to the THP and they made it sound pretty bleak. Future changes to the road apparently do include speed bumps along with rumble strips according to the THP.

Those of us that are planning the show and run are working on it and looking into finding a solution that will still allow us to have an enjoyable run even if it means coming up with an alternate route. So, don't let all the stuff going on with the THP stop you from attending.

Guess TN ran over their budget this year and decided increased police harassment and citations was the best way to make up for the shortfall.

Although at present time it is worse, they are planning on backing off here shortly. I was up there this weekend, and they are not only patrolling the dragon, there were 6 troopers on the skyway also. In talking to one of the THP guys, they are slowly reducing the numbers due to high complaints from out of state tourists and businesses in the area. We will see if this holds true, but they are definitely hearing it from the public outcry. So keep our fingers crossed that they chill out before the show.

We just drove through a section of divided highway south of San Francisco that would have been awesome in the Cobra. The rented mini-van didn't do so well :D I believe it was Highway 280 (from memory). Anyone know that one???

don't know that one, but PCH was AWESOME! Even in a rental magnum!

And well, NOTHING can compare to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire in a 03 cobra!

Guess TN ran over their budget this year and decided increased police harassment and citations was the best way to make up for the shortfall. :rolleyes:TN isn't the only state doing that  Here in AL they have the troopers out in force claiming they're trying to reduce the number of accidents and prove to the govt they need more $$ for extra troopers. Heck, they probably raised enough money with all the extra tickets they issued. I think the news said in one week of "increased highway coverage" they raised... (oops, I mean issued) three times as many tickets as during a normal week, and they're giving out tickets for EVERYTHING. Cop-------><------helpless drivers

THP overtime funding for the Dragon patrols is scheduled to end Sept 30. We'll see. In any event, we have a couple of ideas. Will not list them here, for rather obvious reasons.

Good turnout again for the Dragon Run this year. 21 'Stangs, the overwhelming majority Cobras. We had to back off on the Dragon part of the cruise due to THP on the scene (even at a pre-9:00AM run). 3 SCMCers were greeted by a "Highway Citation Specialist". Still, all had a good time as we hit the "Hellbender" and went on to Cherokee. Then it was over the Smokies (unbeleivably crowded) and on to Pigeon Forge and back to I-40. Look forward to next year!!

Went up there on my Honda CBR about 6 years ago. Man..318 curves in 11 miles being in 2nd gear 95% of the time doing nothing but horseshoes and scraping pucks is the life!!! It was one of the most exhilerating weekends of my life without a doubt. Camping there is beautiful as well and getting roudy with 20 friends is great. Hope this is only temporary-Shane
