VIR Full Course Friday
VIR South Course Sat. & Sun.

Join the SCMC for some on track fun at Virginia International Raceway (http://www.virclub.com/vir/). The event is our annual National Event. The event consists of three days of open track with in car instruction available, a Saturday Mustang and Ford Show, and a Saturday night banquet.

The open track portion of this event is a school with in car instruction where you can safely drive your car the way it was built to be driven. This portion of the event is limited to the first 100 students/drivers. Here is a link to a track video of the Full Course (http://www.sonny2.com/Vids/VIR06a.wmv)and a track video of the South Course (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rql603ydCCM). Here is a link to the track map and a turn by turn desciption of the track (http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Turn_by_turn_guide_to_the_Virginia_International_Raceway_track). Please be sure to download both the registration form and the events packet. The registration form is in adobe and MS Word in case you do not have the updated version of Adobe Acrobat.

Car show participants will get to take their car on track during lunch for "parade laps". A professional photographer will be available for you to purchase photos of your car on track and in action.

Sounds like a great event! :D

Question. Will there be Thursday night camping at the track? :)

Where do we sign up as instructors?

I'm 90% sure at this point I will be able to make it. Will know more in the not too distant future. I have a wedding I need to attend in FL the previous weekend. But it should not be a problem.

Does anyone have any advice, tips, details about trailering a Cobra? I am strongly considering driving an RV pulling a trailer w/ my Cobra on it.

What type of trailer do you need? What should I look for? Etc...

Thanks in advance...hope to camp out and meet you all there!

Mike
It really depends on the towing capacity of the motorhome and your budget. A single car open trailer would be the least expensive and easy to tow. An enclosed trailer is nice but the cost is considerably higher and they hurt you on gas milage more. Regarless you need to look at the hight of the trailer and length of the ramps to make sure your car will load with out dragging. The rollback open trailers are nice but again $$$.

Looking forward to seeing you at VIR!!!

Thanks in advance...hope to camp out and meet you all there!I purchased a 20' open car trailer to pull my 03 vert. I had to make sure I had a longer dove tail with longer ramps so it would not drag and it just makes it. Depending upon how low your car is will determine this. Getting a car trailer with a 2' dovetail and shorter ramps might cause some problems. As Rick said ... open trailer = better gas mileage, lighter weight, and less initial cost. Mine was about $2800.00 including better & longer ramps, a built in tool box, stake pockets, and a spare. You can get the ones without the floor down the middle to save a few dollars & a little weight.

Boycott the Z06's!! Start the movement!

Maybe i should start a seperate thread on this subject but here it goes~

Can someone explain to me why a DOT approved (goverment regulated system) motorcylcle helmet is LESS safer than a SA00xxyyzz? This just irretates me to know end btw.Its been totally acceptable until now, why the change? What person is responsible for the amendment?? Isnt motorcycle racing more likely to have helmet contact than this school???? Whats next a fire suit$$$$$???? :banghead:

OH im assuming when you say "NO motorcycle helmets over and over and over " you are including streetbike helmets? just clarifying.....

Yeller'

Car helmets have to pass fire tests, motorcycle helmets don't.
Seems like I read somewhere that is the main difference.

cobrabitn
01-21-2008, 09:22 PM
The difference between the motorcycle helmet and a SA05 rated helmet is that the latter goes through a multiple "impact" test of which the motorcycle helmet does not. If you are in a car and you flip it, wouldn't you want the best protection for your head? One that has been through a multiple impact test like the road course helmets. Motorcycle helmets go through the same tests as a road course helmet except the road course helmet tests take it a step further.

I don't know if motorcycle racing will have more impact then a driving school, I guess it all depends if you have an accident or not at one of those events?

A fire suit it not mandatory but long sleeve shirts and long pants are mandatory as to give you maximum protection to your skin and body in case of a roll over or fire.

Any M rated helmet would not qualify so I would recommend getting a good helmet that has been throughly tested and is safe to run at our events. It's for your protection and aren't you worth it? :D

<DT>What are the differences between the SA, M and K standards? <DD>The SA standard was designed for competitive auto racing while M standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. The K standard was released to accommodate helmets used in karting. There are three major differences between them:

The SA standard requires flammability test while the M and K standards do not.
The SA and K standards allow for a narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA and K certified helmets may not be street legal).
The SA and K standards include a rollbar multi impact test while M standard does not.

It has not been acceptable at any SCMC on track events I'm aware of.

I'd much rather have a helmet that has been tested for multiple impacts than one that can only say for certain it can withstand one impact. I don't consider it overkill since my life is worth many times more than the value of both helmets combined, and yours is too.

We have not allowed motorcycle helmets in quite a few years and Allan may have not been a member then. This is not something new, just like we don't allow convertibles without rollbars. In the beginning we had convertibles without rollbars in a lead/follow group, now you have to have a rollbar. Same goes for the M rated helmets, we may have allowed them in the past but not anymore. These are the rules we set for participants to run with us and they are there for your protection and the club's.

Joe,

I would say to just watch the first post as it grows closer to the event and you can see how big it can or will get. Is it bigger than Gingerman? Yes, we had more on track participants last year at VIR than we did at Gingerman. The show is only as big as the participants that enter the event and last year, Gingerman was bigger but this year we have more to work with on promotion. I want to do 3 foot trophies for the show but that is going to depend on a couple of things, how many sponsors we can get between now and then and how many vendors we can get between now and then. It will also depend on how many participants we have in the car show. The event should hit the magazines real soon and hopefully we'll get some more exposure and advertising.

Read you SCMC mail and it will tell you more as we get closer and closer. Yes, I'm working on a few more avenues but I just won't say what they are until I get some commitments from some people. If you are going to do the track event then you might want to think about registering for it real soon because once this things hits the mags, I look for it to fill real fast.

Just like last year, I plan on getting down there with plently of time to get registered and teched the day before, which would be thursday this year. The only thing that might change that is is we can't get my father's mystic tuned prior, we might be heading down an extra day early to tune the mystic at pro-dyno, then heading back to VIR thursday morning and meeting you all there.

But as of right now, we can plan on meeting somewhere near or around columbus thursday morning, and heading south as a group. People are more than welcome to stay at the Monjot household wed night, if it makes things easier for anybody, as I have the day off and plan on packing and doing final preperations:D

cobrabitn

Mike,

As I said to you before, we can do a Saturday/Sunday group because we have a few club members that are running VIR club on those days and will be a Friday only. This is the member rate, add $25.00 for non-members.

Friday Only - $250.00
Saturday - $175.00
Sunday - $150.00
Saturday/Sunday = $325.00

After May 14, 2008 (Member and non-member rate)

Friday Only - $275.00
Saturday - $200.00
Sunday - $175.00
Saturday/Sunday = $375.00

We have to have a Friday only that could be grouped with a Saturday/Sunday group otherwise this will be a logistical mess. We have a few Saturday/Sunday spots available right now.

We want to thank Jay Tucker of JLT True Cold Air for being a platinum sponsor for the SVT Cobra 15th Anniversary Celebration at VIR, May 30 - June 1, 2008.

You can visit Jay's website at www.jlttruecoldair.com and check out his products. Want to know which CAI kit I use on my 2004 Mystichrome Cobra?

It's a JLT which netted well over 20 rwhp at certain rpms of my dyno-graph.

The good thing about all of this is you can now "preorder" your kit and have Jay bring it with him to the event to help save on shipping. What's even better is you can get your car tuned after you install it by Pro-Dyno.

Installation takes about an hour or so and you can view the "results" by clicking here:

http://www.svtcobraclub.com/TechApplications/induction/JLT_Results.pdf

If you wish to preorder a kit for your specific application and have him bring it with him for the event to avoid shipping charges, please e-mail him at jay@jlttruecoldair.com

Thanks again to Jay of JLT True Cold Air and we're hoping for a great weekend of high speed fun!

We have many CAI kits for your Cobras, GT Mustangs and Shely GT500's.
We also have some new carbon fiber dress up parts for 2005 - up Mustangs.

Check out the web site and let me know.
Come by the trailer and say hi either way.

You need the race bar. It is made from a larger diameter (ie stronger) tubing and has a diagonal cross brace. Regardless of the type of rollbar you install it renders the back seat unusable because it is no longer safe to ride back there surrounded by steel tubing. The race bar is safer in that it has the diagonal cross brace and is made for your heavier than 3500 pound car.

I suggest you also look at the Maximum Motorsports rollbar offerings. http://www.maximummotorsports.com/

It's getting new fluid, so I can swap the rotors too.

Serious?

What about the wheels? Should I run the stockers? Will the event beat up the finish on my pretty wheels?

It's getting new fluid, so I can swap the rotors too. cross drilled rotors look pretty, but are known to crack when subject to track use....put the plain ones back on for the event....are you running stock pads? I'm pretty sure the stock ones will work fine being this is your first event....after you get a few events under your belt, you'll want something a little more aggressive....stock wheels and tires are probably a safe bet, but what are the size and brand of the aftermarket tires?

cobrabitn
05-01-2008, 08:30 PM
Jay,

Exactly what Ken said! Cross-drilled rotors are prone to crack and solids will do the job just fine. I only run solids on my 94 Cobra and can go a year's worth of track events without warping.

You can use your stock wheels but those 18 inch tires are expensive, eh? :D

For a first event what you have is just fine and many people including myself recommend just doing everything with a stock vehicle. I would put some wax or something on the wheels to make the brake dust come off easier when you go to clean up the snake. Your wheels will not get beat up but they'll get dirty. ;)

Does any one know if there will be electrical power for fans & air?
Thanks Gary. There's plenty of power in the North/Full Course paddock, and there are a few posts in the South Course paddock. Those in the South Paddock are located along the back of the paddock, and along the pit wall if I'm not mistaken.

VIR will charge you a $25 power hook-up fee, which should cover you for the weekend.

Gary,

Exactly what Stack said. We will have access to the north paddock on Friday along with show set up at the Pavilion area. Then you will move to the south course area for the rest of the weekend. You can set up on the south from the get go but will have to enter the track at the north side.

Couple of questions...

How many "spectators" are included with car show entry? My father-in-law may want to come by for a while on Saturday.

Is the car show area located in the South course pits (like last year)?

We're coming up on Friday. Will it be OK/secure enough to leave the Cobra at the track overnite?

Hey Guys have a few questions as this is my first event at VIR and I'm just rushing with the car and all to make it :doubt:

1. Will a Snell SA2005 open face helmet work? (Pro Phenom Helmet by G-Force)
2. In Groups E (my group) and D, is passing allowed? Am I going to be able to push the car some? Or am I going to be stuck going 90 mph without passing all weekend?
3. Why is Groupe E not listed on the Friday schedule of runs (in the doc file)?

Thanks guys and I will see ya there.

RF Cobra
05-22-2008, 08:54 PM
Rich, as I understand it you will get a pass for your car to gain entry if you register for the car show, so it would let in whoever is in your car. Plus your SCMC membership card will allow entry without having to pay the spectator fee.

From what we have talked about, we are looking at doing the car show in the lot that is on the way to the north course since the turnout for the track will probably fill the south course pit area this time.

Not sure what time they do it, but they do have gates and lock up the track at night and there will probably be some participants camping at the track so there should be any issues with leaving your Cobra overnight. If we bring both cars I will be leaving mine at the track overnight on Friday and Saturday.

Couple of questions...

Yeah, what is the deal with the spectator fee? It is not like this is an actual race or something. I thought the idea was to get people interested so more would come. Are we charging relatives / significant others to come experience the weekend with us for a day?

Details will be e-mailed to everyone who is coming to the event and it will explain everything for the weekend including spectator fees. It is okay to come up on Thursday as we get the track at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

SA2005 helmet is perfect for this event. Passing is allowed in all groups but group E will be limited to three areas. Groups A - C will be passing anywhere on the track. Group D we will discuss at the track. A lot of this will be answered when you make the meeting on Friday/Saturday morning. And speaking about Friday morning, it is best that you get "teched" on Thursday night so you won't lose track time on Friday morning. If you are coming in on Friday, you will need to be there at 7:00 a.m. and go right to work getting teched. I want everyone to have 2 hours of track time on full course Friday and it will not happen for you if you are late.

As far as the show goes, it will be in the "pavilion" area and not on the south course. The south course will not be big enough to house everything that is going on. This is the same area that was used by other clubs when they held their event there.

There is camping and you will have to pay the track direct in order to camp for the weekend.

The reason there is no Group E on Friday is because there are only 4 run groups for Friday. This will give you maximum track time for the day. If you do not show on the Friday list it is because it is not updated yet. We've had 10 - 15 sign ups this week so please be patient, it'll be there by next week. I took all week off from work next week and the majority of everything will be done in the next 4 days.

Thank you for coming out to the 15th Anniversary Celebration of the SVT Cobra. For those of you that have registered, you should have received your event pass via Internet. Print as many passes as you like for friends and family. If you register on Thursday night you will receive a "hard copy" of the pass in your event packet, if you are coming in on Friday then this pass will help you get into the gate without a problem of paying a spectator fee.

Registration for the event begins on Thursday night at 5:00 p.m. and finishes at around 8:00 p.m. During that time your vehicle will be teched "at the track". Getting your car ready for Friday is extremely important as we do not want to lose valuable track time on the full course. If you are coming in on Friday morning, we will do everything we can to get you out on the track on time but we cannot give you any guarantees.

Please note that on Saturday/Sunday we will be located on the south course so if you want to set up there when you first get there, that will be fine. Your car will be teched on the "north" course on Friday and the "south" course on Saturday/Sunday.

The Saturday car show will be at the Pavilion area where both the SCMC and Team Shelby trailers will be set up for registration and display all weekend.

The Saturday night banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m., there will be a "cash bar" set up for anyone who wants to enjoy a beverage before the meal. The cash bar opens at 5:45 p.m. and dinner will be served around 6:30 p.m. or so.

You will receive one more e-mail with the final event schedule no later than tomorrow. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me or any of the event organizers below:

You will need to be at the show by 11 am at the latest to give you time to register and get your pass to go on track if you want to do the parade laps. To prevent a rush and chaos, parade lap passes will not be issued after 11:30.

Looking forward to the first session in the morning! Just completed two days of VIR full course with THSCC - had fun running with the Mustangs in Red Group.

Day #1: Sunny, warm and dry - great track conditions on the Full Course. Running in "A" Group and took a couple sessions with the "B" Group. Lots of fast cars and skilled drivers - made for an enjoyable day. I managed to keep up ;) Day #2 is on the South Course. Good to see American muscle (Ford and Chevy) keeping the Porsches in check! Dinner and drinks at the Plantation Inn at the track was a lot of fun.

Day #2: Sunny, warmer and dry - another great day to run on the South Course. Well...the rain came through after some sun and got the track nice and wet for the first session (Hossiers + Wet = Dancing) - good car control exercise! The clouds quickly blew through, sun came back and track quickly dried for a perfect 2nd session. :D

I once saw Alex Zenardi do this, so I told Lisa; "Take the short cut to get around these guys"!!!!!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Great job Lisa! Sorry the Ted Schwartz "Anti-Gravity" device has worn off on me as well!?!?! :rotf: :rotf:

The shortcut worked! :rotf: Not my first off, and probably not my last either! And I had seen Boris Said do the same thing at VIR, so if he could do it, so could I! (and he came back and won the race!)

Thanks Bruce! If I am going to haul your arse around, I got to get you to pedal harder :D Had a blast!

A very heart felt thank you to Tony, Rick and all the folks who gave us a fantastic week-end at VIR. You guys are a class act. I drove old Two Tons of Fun into the ground. As in 230 miles on track. Had two very good instructors, and I learned a lot about late apex turns. Seems like I've been turning in waay before the "Oh my god we're gonna die point" you are supposed to use. Late afternoon Sunday was incredible. I ran until my brakes were smoking with zero point byes. Of course after about 10 minutes I noticed that the Impala was the ONLY car on the track and I really do appreciate the Chevy only session Tony.:)

Now if I can just convince the wife that the beach on lake Michigan is better than the beach in Florida.

Tony we had a member ride up to VIR from Highpoint only to be told that they would have to pay $20 each for both there children that are 2 years old and 6 months? Was that what they were charging even for the young ones? He turned around and drove back home after the guy at the gate told him that.

Thanks for sharing that with me Mark. If the member showed his membership card then he would have been waved right through. Did he show his card? (You didn't enter the car show, how did you get in?) A simple phone call would have taken care of this and my number is always open, 803.371.0725.

If you send me his name I will send him an apology for the misunderstanding. No the "spectator" fee does not apply to members. If you go and look at page one when the very first post was made, it said SCMC members are exempt.

The front gate was told to give people the "benefit of the doubt" and let them in to the show area no matter what. You can e-mail me the person's name at tony@svtcobraclub.com. I'm sure it was a misunderstanding as this is the first I heard of this, thanks.

Tony, you guys done good again. Had a ball and doing the full track was the only way to go....if you can't get it again next year then at least go for the North Course. Thanks again for getting the event together...Friday the 30th was my birthday :bounce: (now I'm really an "old fart") and I don't think I could have done anything better to celebrate it!!!!! I attended the first race back in '57 at VIR and never would I have dreamed I would one day do what I did Friday...run around VIR kind of like those guys did 51 years ago....a dream come true. Great job!!!!!

He is NOT a member but probably could have been, he wasn't complaining about the $20 for him or his wife he was pissed that they wanted $20 for each of his kids that are clearly well underage ( 5 years and 6 months ) as well as he should be. It's water under the bridge I just wanted to ask that for him so I could explain it to him. He is new to our club and just didnt fully understand thats all. Thanks for the great show I had a good time even thought the rain really just flat out pissed me off but oh well $hit happens. I did get some killer pics from the 12 o'clock track time.

I feel I must comment on the spectacular 3 day weekend I had at VIR with the SVT Cobra Mustang group, and others. Tony crossed onto the fordgtforum a while back spreading the word with complete details and a pleasant invititation to any interested. I don't know why more Ford GT's didn't sign on. . .

Woodard was my Friday instructor on the full course but he had little time to teach me as heat-aggrevated motion sickness; or something similar; limited me to only one full track session. Still, I used his advice the following two days: paraphrasing 'Only brake when the wheels are straight'.

Saturday morning found me better prepared, Dramamine early, new instructor Rich, and a slightly slower track. I think Rich hoped for a quicker learning curve on my part as all day long "EVERYTHING" passed me. Sometimes, twice in a single session. That being said, I had a blast, and did start remembering the corners. Couldn't quite fit the dyno pull in between the track sessions, meetings, and food.

Sunday morning, on the advice from Ryan and others, I spent time with Bruce discussing tire pressures and based on what we observed in tire wear, we knocked the pressures down to about 29. Then there was the little time spent on the North Track parking area assisting Gary with front brake pad replacement. Durring my second track session of the day, and final for my weekend, I finally began feeling comfortable and pushing it a bit in the corners and on the straight(s).

What a blast, the entire weekend.

Though almost all names have escaped me (old age), I had a great time with those from my native Massachusetts, Detroit area, Austin, Fairfax, North and South Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, Nahville and Ontario and look forward to seeing you again at another event.

Also a thanks go out the the VIR events and staff folks, photographers and food prep areas, and everyone who had anything to do with making this possible. Everything was first class.

Mark,

I think there was a misunderstanding and they should not have charged for the kids, our events are children ages 12 and under are free. I was going by the fact you said that he was a member and I researched the club mail where on May 15 I told every club member to bring a membership card with them to get free access. This is something we will correct for next year and I am still willing to send an apology to that individual for the mix up.

Thanks,

Tony

While I would like to take a lot of the credit :) , I have to put it where it is well deserved.

Burke Dawson and Lauren put all of the packets together. Getting the numbers late really hurt us on Thursday/Friday morning but Burke made it happen on Friday morning. So a big thanks to Burke and Lauren!

Rick McNutt was extremely instrumental in the success of the on track portion along with Garry Talbert and Scott Whitehead. Thank you Rick!!!! :)

Special thanks to Allan and Leah Scott for assisting with the show and taking pictures. Also thanks to Mike Boyle and Dave Stanfield as they helped with the logistics on Saturday during the show.

Thanks to all of the instructors who helped make the event run smoothly, this includes Bruce Cameron. :rotf:

Thanks to the sponsors, JLT Cold Air and Asbestco, as they helped with the financial success of the event.

Thanks to Time Out Sportswear for those awesome 15th Anniversary jackets we "gave away" at the banquet.

Thanks to David Vizard for giving us a great topic of discussion at the Saturday night banquet.

Thanks to Jason of "Mustang Enthusiast" for going out and doing the event coverage.

Thanks to Pro-Dyno for coming a couple of hundred miles to set up and provide the participants an opportunity to get their cars tuned.

Thanks to Team Shelby for coming out and supporting the event with their presence and their free banquet "give aways". That was very gracious of Sharon, Dale, Robert, and Don.

Thanks to the top notch staff at VIR and thanks for giving us the opportunity to come out and enjoy your track.

Thanks to my wife who really puts up with a lot, doesn't complain to anyone, and helps me day in and day out, 365 days a year.

Thanks to all of the participants and anyone I may have missed as the success of the event was due to all of you!!

Guess it's time for us to catch our breath and get going with getting ready for the next event.

The car show was great Saturday and I want to thank everyone that participated in the show. Also, thanks to Burke, Dave, Mike and Tina for helping out with the show as well as Team Shelby for their help with judging.

sorry its taken this long to reply. the 1st few days i got back from the event i couldnt get on the site.

many thanks to everyone involved in getting this event together. i am sure there are many that i/we didnt even know about. as tony has mentioned.

what a great time. it was well worth the 5.5-6.0 hour drive from knoxville tennessee. on top of that i didnt even have to drive  ;) . made a deal with rick(thanks again) to get my car trailered there and rode with a buddy up there to help keep him company also.

our crew had some problems. svtmadman(the red z06 w/black back end), cmac(the 3rd gen black camaro convertable). and i had some issues of my own. that turned out to not be a problem.

me and cmac had a lot of fun pacing each other out there. but by far the most fun(which i would have never guessed) was the 1st session out saturday morning. WWOOOOOOHHOOOOOOO! the RAIN is a blast. up to this point, i had always been concerned about what the weather may bring to one of these events. now........who cares......its all a ball. :bounce:

again, big thanks to svt cobra club. VIR. and our buddy kase hanging out with us all weekend and taking some great pictures.

c-ya then,

just wanted to chime in and say thanks for a great event! unfortunately a leaking radiator stopped me short sunday. i must remember to not make unnecessary changes at the track :(

during the removal of the thermostat (just gutted the spring/plate) i broke the head off the radiator drain plug... and it was leaking a little. had some antifreeze in there so day was over. the neon would run a little hot near halfway thru a session and ecu would retard ignition. thought if i could drain fluid/replace with water and gut thermostat id be running cool  well i was running home early.

was great finally getting the DA coil overs dialed in.

That was very good video. We have some video but it is currently in transit from WI to TX for Firme to put up on the site. I got to thinking about the north vs south course and although the north course is longer, I'm guessing the south would be more fun and less brake intensive.
