Buckeye Road Trip

Time to start considering and planning a Buckeye Road Trip to an SCMC event south of the Mason-Dixon Line as a group/caravan. It would be great to travel to an event and represent the Buckeye SCMC together.

3 events are potential choices...

4/5-4/6 Food Lion AutoFair - Charlotte, NC (Car Show)

5/30-6/1 SVT Cobra / Shelby GT 500 Nationals - Danville, VA

9/19-9/21 SCMC Gingerman ( I know this is "north" but we should go!)

June 20-22 MCA Buckeye Nationals Mustang Show - Columbus Ohio

As for me, only time will tell what I will be able to do in 2008. Having a child is now going to play a rather large role in both my free time and free budget!:D

My current plans for 2008 are:

-Possible indoor karting event sometime between jan and march!
-Possible dyno day as soon as the weather breaks, either a local shop in columbus, or (what I really would like to see Dan from Pro-Dyno come up here and tune some of our cars for us!)
-of course as many local drag events, autocrosses, and shows that time and money can support
-and like Mike said, I once again would like to participate in one out of town track event with the club. I did Gingerman in 2006, and VIR in 2007. I would love to attend the event at CMP, but the timing is just too early in the year. With my son's b-day on Sept 20th, I think the "fun police" is going to give the thumbs down gingerman this year. So as we sit right now, my event that I am shooting for is the VIR event on 5/30,5/31,and 6/1. I really would like to run both the full track on friday and the south course on sat and sun, which means heading down there thurs, and coming back mid afternnon on sunday. This is what Chris Anderson and I did this past year, and it worked out real nice.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get a rollbar in this beautiful car!:bounce:

I am committing to the Dublin, Ohio Mustang Club of America Regional show 6/20-6/22. Who is in? Mike Monjot will put a tent in his backyard for us! I am sending my registration in! Hotel pending Big Mike's tent response!

Would love to go to the Buckeye Stangs Show in Columbus but will be in Denver that week. Also, with coaching, most of my weekends are shot until the end of the school year. I will get to an event or two over the summer.

Another possibility is the Regional Mustang Show in Canada at the Ford Plant. It is the first weekend in August and I am planning on going up. If anyone is interested, I could set up a Cobravan to go up there.

I do have an event that i'm bringing up that sounds like a thrill. I almost made it to it last year, but wasn't able to because of a last second obligation.

Anyone ever heard of Road America? It's in Wisconson...and also a track on all of the Forza games. Well the MFBA is reserving the track again this year, and is open for registration. It's a little pricey, but wow...it's an amazing track. Back speeds easily hit 120-130s.

This years rates are as follows:

$220 - One spot, One day
$385 - One spot, Two days
$685 - One spot, Two days, Two events (only offered during April registration)
$15 - Saturday Night Dinner off site, one ticket
$5 - Daily spectator fee

As much as I want to do Road America( I will someday in the future), I am going to have to agree with Tony. As far as bang for the buck goes, nothing is going to beat VIR this year with SCMC. $450 is going to get you 3 track days, and more track time than a set of brake pads with get ya (so bring extra Mike R:bounce: ). As far as instructor, track time, top speed, etc, VIR has more than I can handle, and simply can't wait until May! We already have 3-4 guys heading down together, and we would love to have you join us! The more the merrier!

question for ya tony. I've read about these braided hoses for the 96-98. Where do you pick these up at, and how much do they usually run? That's the only real prep i'll need as far as i understand.

also, i plan to bring my fiancee along, but it claims that this is a closed event and that only participants are aloud to be admitted. is she gonna be able to come? I'd imagine others of you are planning on bringing your significant other :doubt:

Almost any aftermarket place can get you some braided lines for your car. (Maximum Motorsports) If you are planning on running the vert then you're going to have to get a roll bar in it. Not sure where you read it is a closed event because we will allow spectators but your fiancee is welcome to come along with you.

I'll be bringin the coupe down, mostly due to miles and not needing a roll bar. Is it ONLY the front brakes that have to be braided, and not the rears?

I recommend changing all of them as in time the rubber lines expand and wear out. I'll get the page 15 corrected but basically what we do is just change dates and location on the forms and don't upgrade them for spectators as we usually have our events just for participants and their friends. This is an open event and there is more to tell in the next week or so but I'm not ready to say just yet what should be happening in May/June. :D

I'm not going to say for sure If I'll make it as it depends on how busy I am when the time comes. Andrew, I would also suggest getting some good brake fluid in it when you do the lines, I boiled my stock fluid last year on Saturday afternoon and had to change it out that evening at the track for Sunday and believe me even just on the south course at the end of the straight I was 130-135 in the CTS-V on Michelin Pilot Sport All Seasons hindering corner speed, exit acceleration, and braking zones. Some of the modifications I'm doing to the V will kill its handling on a road coarse, done more for AX events, most important being a much larger front sway bar as I had trouble last year lifting the inside rear in corners and not being able to accelerate off like I would like. When I bought this cobra, it cames with some new tires on it that i don't care for, so i do believe i'll be killin 2 birds with one stone here :thumbsup: Also has hawk pads on it, and they are SOO noisy for DD. I look forward to burnin those off too lol.

Only thing I could quickly suggest is to flush and change the fluid on your new cobra. Probablly a good idea anyway if you don't know how long the existing fluid's been in there and certainly you want to do it prior to a track weekend.

Congrats on the new ride by the way.. :bounce: I live in Pittsburgh now and not sure about heading to vir or not, but I believe I'm going to take some time off and hot Carolina next month for my first track event as I want to get my car tuned also.

Once a Cobra guy...always a Cobra guy Dean. You certainly can go to the VIR event...any car is welcome per the event page.

VIR - many maybes - none posted on official thread yet but I will be there and am prodding as many as I can to go. It ain't cheap but I think I may be driving an RV and trailering my Cobra so staying at the track may be an option to save $$ - I hear the track has shower facilities that we can use. I will post up more on this later as I can confirm some items...stay tuned.

As for VIR, I still am only 99% I have the money set aside, and the vacation time already put it....I JUST CAN'T FIND A ROLLBAR!!!!!!
I have looked into having a custom one bent, but most of the designs I have looked at, won't pass SCCA or NASA tech inspection, look great, and keep the lightbar, but I guess not actually safe.
I have a couple leads on bolt-in bars, and a good friend (Rick)might loan me one for the weekend if it comes down to that, but I just can't get myself to send in the money until I know I will be able to get on the track.
I know at least there will be a small carivan heading south, as I am pretty sure Chris Anderson in his CTS-V is planning on going.

Hopefully I will work something out in the next few weeks, or I am just going to have to break down and order one from Maximum, and have them freight ship it from fricken CA:eek:

wow i was under the impression that your 97 had a rollbar already! That's a shame, as i'm sure you're getting upset. I remember thinking the same thing about my 97 vert. I was about to jump into a rollbar for some of these events...then just decided i'd buy a hardtop version lol.

I'm the same way, in the i have money set aside, but i'm checking over my finances repeatedly to see where i stand. I hate the brakes that i have now, and the tires don't really thrill me that much either, so i'll be happy to run through a set of both of those. Only things left to do is find those braided brake lines.

I'd really like to get a trailer to be able to haul the car down as travelling 400+ miles in the car I plan on tracking for a weekend kind of unsettles me. I did trade in my '00 Durango for an '05 with the hemi/towing package a few weeks back so I'm set on that end... Now it's just trying to swing the finances for the trailer (and a place to park it..lol).

Actually, I got mine through a NASA or SCCA ad. I was fortunate, a guy in Chat, TN had one for sale and it coincided with a trip that I was taking down to Alabama with the wife for vacation. We drove down in the Cobra, I dropped her off and immediately shot back up to TN to buy the rollbar. They are very tough to get used... I tried for at least 9 months before getting this one..

That would be GREAT tony, but remember, I need a vert version! Just let keep me posted! Rick decided that he is going to keep his white vert in track form, and I can't blame him at all, with all that is done to that car, it would be a sin to pull the cage from it.

As for budget. From autopower or MM, with shipping I am looking at over $500, I have only found one for sale, and that one requires welding, and is still going to cost me $400. So anything that saves me any more cash would be great.

I think I actually have already talked to that guy. He doesn't want to ship, and if he did, the price would be close to the same as ordering one from MM or autopower, so I might as well drop the extra 30-40 buck to get one with a harness bar. If he was closer, it would be in the garage!

Hey tony, i've got an old set of tires that i've really been wanting to get rid of, but i'm a little concerned that they might not last the whole weekend. Looking for your thoughts on it...as well as anyone else who's reading this with any track knowledge.

My front set right now have just a little over 1/8" left and about 3/16" left on the rears. Front/rears are interchangable. Nothing would be worse then coming down only to find out that it's not gonna cut it. Thoughts?

I've just been wanting to burn these off for some time now, and thought this would be an awesome chance to do so.

BTW - for the LIFE OF ME, i cannot find a set of REAR brake lines for the 96-98 cobras. TONS of front brake line sets, but no rear sets anywhere. Where on earth am i to look for these? How important is it that the rear lines are braided?

It's not as important for the rear lines be braided but I do recommend that you replace the rear ones with new factory lines. You can get stock replacements from NAPA as that is where I got mine last year and they are exact in every way.

On the tires, I would put the better ones up front and the ones with 1/8 on the rear. I plan on buying new tires before this event so I'll bring 4 spares with me and if you cord a tire, you can just use one of my spares to finish off the weekend. I'm assuming you are talking about race rubber, right? If not, then you can borrow my race rubber for the weekend. They are on 17 X 9 Cobra R rims. :)

tony when you say race rubber, are you talking about the speed rating? Or just a dedicated race tire? These tires are Z rated summer performance tires, and i'm not sure if that puts it in race rubber catagory. They're not all-season tires, if that's what you mean. I was under the impression that street tires would be ok for race rubber...am i wrong?

Wait a sec...so when it comes to racing, you want the most tread in the FRONT? Isn't it usually wanted in the back? Pardon my racing newbism :rolleyes:

You do not have to have race tires for this event. I guess I thought you meant that. Probably the best thing for you to do is use your street tires since it is your first event. However, if you want to see what race tires will do for you, maybe sometime during the weekend you can swap them out.

If I had to chose between the rear of my car sliding or the front of it, I opt for the rear. I use the better tires on the front since you have to turn left and right.

I'd be curious to see what kinda difference race rubber would make over street performance rubber.

Also, is there anything specific to look for when looking for helmets? Obviously SA-2005 is a biggie, but closed face/open face? brand? It must be a SA 2005 helmet and not a M2005 helmet. There is a tremendous difference between race rubber and street tires. Like I said, use the street ones for part of the weekend and then switch to race tires. You'll never look back trust me.

I have one like the first one but you can get an open face as long as it is "SA 2005". There are plenty of open face helmets from Simpson, Biffee, etc....

I've checked out tirerack.com, and they only have 2 tires under the track/competition DOT that would fit my extra rims. V710 is what I recommend but I would wait and see if they throw a sale on some of the other competitive tires. I would wait till the last minute to get them just in case they have a closeout on that tire or another brand.

Time to start considering and planning a Buckeye Road Trip to an SCMC event south of the Mason-Dixon Line as a group/caravan. It would be great to travel to an event and represent the Buckeye SCMC together.

3 events are potential choices...

5/30-6/1 SVT Cobra / Shelby GT 500 Nationals - Danville, VA

9/19-9/21 SCMC Gingerman ( I know this is "north" but we should go!)

Just a little question for the Buckeye Stang group. Do you look at shows in the area before you plan a date or are you at the mercy of Summit Racing?

The reason I ask is that a couple years ago the show was in the middle of July and didn't seem to conflict with other large Mustang shows. Last year it was the first weekend of August and it was the same weekend as the Lake Erie Mustang Owners Club Show in Erie, PA. We (LEMOC) have had it on the first weekend in August for almost 20 years except when we hosted our National Show in 2006. Most people can only go to one show in a weekend and have to make a choice.

This year, the Summit Show is the same weekend as The No-Borders National Show in Welland that is in easy diving distance. This makes car owners have to choose which one to attend.

I have attended the Summit Show for the past 4 years and enjoy it but this year I plan on going to the National Show in Canada.

I realize that things happen but in the future, it would be better to check the area calender before you schedule a show. We moved the LEMOC Show to Aug. 10 because of the National Show and do look forward to as many members of the SVT Cobra Club to attend if possible.

If you really abuse them the V710 might last 2 weekends, they are more of an AX tire than a road race tire, the V700 is more of a road race tire and will last much longer but the trade off is they have less grip. Hoosier A6 have the most grip but you would be lucky to get a weekend on a road course out of them. If I were you I'd just run street tires for at least a few track days as you have to learn to drive the car first and race rubber covers up a lot of driving mistakes. When I started AXing it was advised to me to run at least a season on street tires first for that reason.
