i just bought my 1996 cobra and was changing the oil for the first time and got 5 quarts from the store and a kn oil filter. The owners manual says the car take exactly 5 quarts, so i finish the oil change and start the car and the oil low light comes on and i chech the dipstick and its not even on there. I cant figure out why the owners manual says 5 quarts and its not even on the dipstick. The car doesnt have a bigger oil pan. Does anyone know the answer to this, is there something wrong? And what is your opinions on KN oil filter. thank you

The owners manual should say 6 quarts of oil, not sure why yours is saying 5.
6 quarts of oil, maybe a tad more.

What Tom said, 6 quarts but when we went to Dearborn, the people on the assembly line even stated 6.5 quarts so somewhere around there should keep you in good shape.
I use a stock Motorcraft oil filter, I'm not so sure a K&N is worth the extra bucks when you can get an 820S at Wal-Mart for a lot less.
Although, I really don't understand by being a quart low, all that would happen?

NO NEED to waste $$ the FL820S is the best filter for your car.
6.5 quarts is what my 96 Cobra use to take to show full on dip stick.

Are you sure that you are looking at the Cobra manual and not the Mustang manual. My 2001 Cobra came with the generic Mustang manual but then a supplemental manual for Cobra only items, such as fluid capacity.

I had the same problem the first time I changed my oil.I asked some questions on another site and got blasted in the face with nasty comments.I guess some people are born knowing that 6.5 quarts is normal.good to see your getting some respect here.
