Dear Cobra Owners,
Since I haven't been a member for very long, I asked several Tennesseans about "Where is the dragon run?"

I have been told that it lies on U.S. 129 south of Maryville, TN between Tapoco, NC and Topton, NC (ending at US 19/74). {A word to the wise: This is a very hazardous road where 100's of motorcycylists and car owners have driven off the mountain and died! You may need to increase your life insurance policy before you drive it--and say "goodby to your loved ones!"} I have heard of horror stories about those who have died trying to beat the Dragon. It is said that you should concentrate on the road and remember you are on a "roller-coaster" roadway where you won't leave 3rd gear.

Anyway, I'm going b/c at 60 years old, I want to ride the Dragon b/4 I die!!!

It is only a dangerous stretch of road if you make it a dangerous stretch of road. Any road is dangerous, if you drive like a dummy. I have driven the "Dragon", and loved it. I never felt out of control, nor did I push the envelope. Follow the rules of the road, hang on, and have fun

I agree with Mike about driving habits, we have been doing this for 8-9 years now and we have had a couple of bump ups and one flip. Drive smart and stay alive, the dragon is a lot of fun and there are plenty of cops there to keep it manageable.

More information about the road can be found here:

Just to clarify, the flip involved two SCMC club members (in the same car together) but it happened when they were on the Dragon on their own and not during one of the club's Dragon Run events.

Dragon is lots of fun especially early in the morning when there is no traffic but... that was true 3 years ago now there is cop on every corner harassing peoples left and right. As far for deaths on this little piece of road there was 28 total since 1995 so hundreds? Well I don't think so. Either way there is so many roads around this area with little or no traffic at all. Just my 0.2c
