Come and join the SVT Cobra Mustang Club, SVT Owner's Association, Track Club USA, Modular Boss and new for this year, the Roush Road Crew for their annual SVT Superfest to be held on Memorial Day weekend. You do not have to be an SVT owner in order to participate in the event but if you want to drive on track over the weekend, you must be a member of one of these three clubs.

A BIG welcome to the Roush Road Crew for jumping on board with us in 2013. In case you didn't know it, numerous Roush engineers helped with the development of our SVT Mustangs, so in a way, we are all related.

Looking at the registration form;

What is the difference between the two intermediate groups (yellow, orange)?

Do we need to pay entry fees for our crew members?

cobrabitn
01-13-2013, 03:14 PM
White - Instructor
Blue - Advanced - more than 10 events
Orange - Intermediate 1 - 7-9 events
Yellow - Intermediate 2 - 4-6 events
Green - Novice - 0-3 events

You do not have to pay entry fees for crew members.

Nice Car Doc!

Thanks,
I've been talking to a few local guys (we can't let Bruce embarrass us in our backyard :D ).

A few FAQs:
Will the track allow overnight camping and/or motorhomes?
When will you post a schedule? They are looking for how many track sessions per day.
What is the deal on the skeet shooting? That sounds fun. We can bring our own shotguns?

And, we think it only fair that Bruce (and anyone with WI plates) gives us a half-lap lead...;)

Seriously, it sounds like a great event.

cobrabitn
01-17-2013, 12:10 AM
Yes on the camping, you pay the track.

I will post a schedule as soon as I can but that will be after this VIR event. You can expect at least 4 run sessions per day. Sunday afternoon, the track will be wide open so you can get tons of time then.

You will have to call the track on that but I do believe you can bring your own gun for skeet shooting.

Sounds like numerous people will be coming from the cheese state.

i had to pull out of the recent event because of weather. i plan to be there for Friday and Saturday for this one. When you say green group gets 0-3 events, does that mean a novice could possibly not get any events for a day. call me crazy but kind of hard for me to break free of the novice group not actually getting on the track. once we get some time could we change groups for the next day?

cobrabitn
02-06-2013, 09:44 PM
I don't think you understand what the 0-3 events means? It means if you have never done this before and have zero events, you will get an instructor for the weekend. If you have as many as three events, you will still get an instructor for the weekend. If you demonstrate to the instructor that you can go solo, then we can discuss you moving up a group. Does that make more sense?

Cobrabitn,

I'd like to get a little more info. I've participated in about 15 HPDE schools since 2009 at Mid-Ohio Road Course and Nelsons Ledges in OH, mostly with the Porsche and BMW schools. I haven't seen any events out on by Mustang clubs.

Is this event similar the same as the High Performance Driving Education events?

I'd love to get on the track with some other GT500 and Cobra's.

thanks,

You can bring two cars but you can only have a meatball on one of them at a time during the weekend. That means if you want to change cars, you have to take the meatball off your current one and place it on the other. You cannot have two people driving your cars or else they have to pay a separate entry fee for the weekend.

If you are a seasoned driver, then you can sign up the week of provided we don't hit the 120 car limit, then you are SOL. You lose the early bird discount on May 1, 2013 so if you wait till after then, you cannot take the discount.

Tony,

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but currently the online form says this in the text preceding the actual sign-up boxes:

Three days on track- $575.00
Two days on track - $470.00
One day on track - $235.00
Hyperdrive - $60.00
Car Show - includes event tee and parade laps - $20.00
Event tee and parade laps - $30.00
Saturday Night banquet with guest speaker - $35.00
Event Participant - $20.00
Friday Night Social - $15.00 (Pay at track)

I'm thinking that "Car Show - includes event tee and parade laps - $20.00" is incorrect, yes?

Also - does one need to register their spouse/significant other/minor children for the car show (or as a participant), even if they don't have a car and are serving as crew?

For those that are running in beginner or novice groups, I will have a set of EBC Blue brake pads for PBR calipers. These will also work for an advanced driver if you want to add a bit more braking distance than normal. They are also a great street pad. I will unload cheap.

^That was not dirt, it was sand. Like being on the beach and surounded by an ocean of asphalt.

Just installed some new electronic gadgetry this past weekend. It should make for some real nice video and GPS syncing. I also cleaned the track car for the first time this year. Aside from all the nicks in the front the paint still looks pretty good.

Your name will be on that list so you can just drive on in. The list will be good for the entire weekend so it won't matter what day you go into the track. If your name is not on the list, you will need to contact me asap but if you are listed in the first post, rest assured, your name will be on the list. Thanks!

Tony, I will be arriving early on Thursday, is there a specific location to unload, and get set up ? I will be trailering my car there, so I will have a trailer, also, extra tires, canopy, etc. etc. I have never been there, so, is there a good or bad spot, are there pit stalls available ?

cobrabitn

The reason we had the car show in the north paddock last year is because not enough people went up to the skid pad when we held it there. If we had, say, 300 cars, then we would move it but for less than 100, you would get more traffic in the north paddock.

Let's see if we can find a place with more asphalt this year. Besides, the helicopter will be close to the skid pad and we may not want to feel the propeller wind.

cobrabitn
05-22-2013, 08:23 AM
Please be aware of the track's policies concerning getting to the track prior to 3:30 p.m.

1. For those participants who arrive early on Thursday, we will have them stage in our Raceplex which is located on Ryans Way. To get there they will make a right hand turn off of Pine Tree Road onto Ace Drive and then make a left turn onto Ryans Way. They will proceed all the way to the gate at North Paddock Road. The VIR Club is on track and when they clear the Paddock and Maintenance has cleared the paddock, we will let your folks have access, this is generally not prior to 5:30 pm.

2. For those with lodging I am working on getting a representative from lodging to bring lodging packets up to the staging area for those who have made lodging arrangements with VIR. Check in times are: Villas 3:00 pm, The Lodge 4:00 pm, Paddock Suites 5:30, Garages 6:30. For those who wish to check in prior to the gate opening, they will have to drop their trailer in the staging area (field), then they can go to lodging for check in. We will not allow anyone to enter the facility before 3:30 or lodging, so their personnel can come to the Staging area.

3. While in staging, participants will sign the VIR waiver, pay for camping, electricity, pit vehicle registration, etc while they are waiting.

4. We do charge a facility access fee for those visitors who are not affiliated with your organization.

Fantastic event. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication. It is mind boggling at how much you put into this club. I know that I speak for everybody, when I say Thank you, and a job well done.

I want to also thank all your assistants Marci, Joel, Pat, David, Daniel, Jesse and others who helped organize this event. Thanks to all the instructors, the VIR track personnel and the great cooks who prepared the meals. It was a total package, with the big name sponsors in attendance.

The best part was spending time with like minded friends, who have a passion for their cars, and driving them to the best of their abilities, after learning the proper track procedures from the many dedicated instructors that you have always assembled.

What an incredible event at VIR this week….best track event I have ever been to since my first one in 2005...thanks Tony and the entire SCMC/TCUSA crew. Thanks also for the great sponsors that demonstrated their products and gave away such great prizes.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with lots of old friends and making some new ones. In addition I was able to run 9 sessions over the weekend and take 2,806 photos…most of which were on track action! It will probably take several weeks sort through all 2,800+ images…hopefully I got everyone.

For club members that want all of their photos I typically crop and color correct each image and save on a DVD in high resolution format for $50, including shipping. For more details or to order your DVD today of professional quality images from SVT Superfest at VIR, please email me at 70machwon@nc.rr.com – thanks!

The photos will be here, but I think they are still loading more.

Echoing others, again I thank Tony and Pat, Peter, Marcie, and all who played a role in this event: the most fun I've had since the spring event of 2010. A short clip from Orange Group Sunday 3rd session; couldn't do another as the cord was visible on my left front:

It's all good...let him have his day. I could have been just as tired with the weekend activities. I think this vid was on Sunday afternoon. I just disagree with his comment about being "owned so badly". I'm not going to make excuses, but if it was the last run, I had a passenger and was trying to implement what Norbert was telling me to do. I also had another rider on an earlier session but I just don't remember.

I don't know, I never timed myself. I guess it wouldn't hurt to see what I am running. The Boss is supposed to have a timing system in it but I do not know how to work it yet. Going by Jason's times, I guess it is at least 2:18s.

If you have an iPhone get Harry's lap timer and a dual XPGS150 GPS reciever. A hundred bucks combined and you'll get lap times and what G's you're pulling.

I was learning the track Friday. Saturday I was averaging around 2:20 a lap with a few freak standouts around 2:14 or so when there was no traffic. I threw a wheel weight though so was holding to 120-130 on the straights because the vibration was annoying.

cobrabitn

I have an iphone but the Boss is supposed to have the software to be able to time the laps. My speeds were as follows on the straights.

Back straight - 145 mph
Front straight - 135 mph
Bridge straight - 120 mph
Uphill esses - 95-100 mph

I couldn't look at the speedo in the turns.

Tony, I would be glad to ride with you at VIR, and pass along any tips I may be able to provide. Your lines did not look bad, but we both know there is better than a 2:18 in your Boss.

I wish I had it on vid, but my traqmate did not turn on my camera on Saturday. I chased down that Z in my 260hp '90 GT. My car is 3300lbs with me in it. If the session would not have ended I would have passed him. You could even say I "owned him".

cobrabitn

LOL... I want you to know that I am proud of the way Jason drove his Z. As stated above, he did a good job hanging with me. If it was on Sunday, I did have a rider for 3 of my 4 sessions so that could have been part of the problem as to why I was slower. I don't get a lot of track time because I am busy doing other things.

We'll get some time in January to get my skills at VIR honed in. It's all about seat time, I just need more of it.

We all had a good time, that's what matters the most anyway. I talk smack, everyone else is entitled to do it also.

I do have the video of Reg doing the 360s, I'll post it when I compile a slideshow/video from the event. :) I also have 2 other videos and I presume we could get track laps times from them, too. Thanks for the kind offer, as it is always appreciated!!

I was playing with a new line in the climbing esses so there is more time to gain if I add a lot more throttle through there. Keep turning at the first left until the next two curbs line up with the lone tree on the horizon and the esses disappear.

http://youtu.be/MDeGV55Ue5c

T3 and South Bend still need work. T14 braking too. And no reason to be part throttle into T15.

Excuses, excuses.

When I watch the 370z video & others in the GoPro age, my first thought is I'd really like to change my in-car/roll bar camera mount to a front bumper mount. The perspective of track speed seems to be so much faster! On the other hand, I feel like you lose a little perspective of the track's peripheral and what the driver really experiences, especially in the turns.

Bert, I made attempts at that line through the Uphill Esses (essentially 1 left, followed by 2 rights straight through toward the little tree in the background) but never successfully accomplished it. For me it was more of a left, a flick to the right, a slight flick left and the right. I made notes to work on that more next time along with just about ever other turn out there.;)

I managed to find 3 to 4 seconds/lap with essentially no changes to the car set up since my last trip down in 2008, athough I think the curbing in several areas including the Uphill Esses has changed (for the better). I found my lap times to be more consistent throughout each session (2:16's - 2:17's), with one (1) personal best lap of 2:15.079 during my 3rd and final session on Day 3.

Power to weight, I'm at 3700lbs, 290rwhp/290rwtq = 12.76 to 1. Even if I could drop 500lbs, which would be great, I'd still be at 11 to 1.

I had an absolute blast at this event! I can't believe it's already been almost a full week!

It 's a custom built mount using a RAM cradle. I have a GoPoint BT1 Bluetooth dongle connected to the OBDII port that transmits the car's data to the iPhone. There's an inherent lag due to the transmission but the TrackAddict app puts it together pretty nice. All told I have about $140 invested in the set up, not including the iPhone (app, dongle, cable, and cradle).

Tony, that Corvette pretty much "owned" everyone on the track that run. But you're going to get that kind of disparity between cars and drivers when you mix the run groups (white and yellow in the blue). Naschmitz, was that you? Whoever it was, it was a nice running car!

Anyway yeah, I averaged 2:22s on Saturday and 2:18s on Sunday. I had a blast the whole weekend!

Norbert is a good instructor. Since my first name is also Norbert I feel compelled to give you additional instruction LOL!

You probably just turned in too early. Early in, early out! The car should still be at the left edge of the track at the turn-in arrow. Then hit the apex 3/4 of the way around T1. I commonly go in too hot, turn in at the arrow, and then can't get back to the apex. That's a 0.5 sec lap time penalty right there.

Where you are the track compounds the problem because it is slightly crowned and wants to help you off!

You can call me Norby from now on if you like.

Norbert said I have to work on turn one and Oak tree, if I can get those two down, my times will be much better. We were out on the track for one session and then I looked at his book afterwards. It actually helped looking at the photos of what he was talking about. I told him we'd work on it some more in January and he said he would bring his car so he could show me in car what he wants me to do.

Thanks for the tips, Norby. :)

Look, I usually don't get involved in this kinda thing, anymore, but I think it should be said, considering the multi-forum posting...

First off, the 180 treadwear Bridgestone RE-11 (wasn't that NASA's former spec COMPETITION tire for a while?) is as much a "street tire" as raping a prostitute is considered shoplifting. Not to mention the waning tractive capacity of heat-cycled out Continental slicks.

It's generally bad form to talk smack about having "owned" someone during a fricken HPDE.

...because somebody might show up and post a video of you and your NISMO Z not exactly flying away from them in your full-containment race seat with your RE-11 "Street tires" and Carbotech XPs and brake ducts, while they pursued you in their fairly stock 2007 regular-assed GT and almost completely worn away Hawk Blues on year-old 360 treadwear street tires, with 3:31 gears, 30ish hp behind you and a couple hundred pounds above you, while they're still trying to learn to drive again because they've been gone on deployment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SQAoO4Gbj4

Jason can drive, for sure...I got faster by staying behind him and watching his line, which was on-point...but HPDE isn't a race. There's no trophy to win, and no bragging rights to go around.

That is all.

You should rub it in more. :D

I had a car that was capable of going car to car with Bruce. My plan was to hold back (sandbag) during qualifying, and then surprise him in the last event. :D

It didn't happen. I figured the engine broke a piston ring. No. The rings were all in spec. I think that for some weird reason that some hole was plugged as the oil was supposed to drain into the pan. The back-up made the engine pull oil into the combustion chamber from the intake manifold.

The engine had some trick parts in it and will return soon (Rd Atl, Sept).

My 1995 Snipes Cobra had an engine problem at the HSR Mitty.

It just didn't happen for me at VIR (it still is at the engine builder).

The problem is one of those weird things. I am still confused. The oil is entering from the intake. The rings and bearings test perfect.

It will be tested and perfect soon. :D
