were the explorer motors the same as the cobras?

No. The intake is different (the upper for sure but I'm not sure about the lower). When they first installed the 5.0 in the Explorer (96) they used the GT-40 heads but later (not sure what year) they changed to the GT-40P heads. The cam is also unique to the Explorer motor.
