View Full Version : Carolina Motorsports Park- Open Track Event March 15-16, 2003

The SCMC will have its first open track event in SC at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. The event consists of two days of open track with instruction. Why not drive your car in a closed secure environment instead of out on the street where you jeopardize many people besides yourself. Take it off the street and put it on the track. :bounce:

Instead of doing the "Free" track event that was discussed before, why can't we work out something like a "half-price-for-members" event. Sounds like the sponsors are contributing enough to pay for some of the event. Man, can you imagine the flock of people that would come to this if it were a half-price event. ($75 a day for 2 days maybe?) Tony, any thoughts on something like that?
I don't know if I can fork up $275 for the event plus prepping the car costs. Maybe that can be something to look at in the future?

Hmm.... I like that idea Steve. I agree with you and I really want everyone to go as a club. That would be $75.00 for one day though, not two or are you saying $150.00 for two days for every member? Also, I haven't given up on the free day yet so don't write it off just yet. All I was saying was that we didn't get what we were promised and I didn't want people thinking one thing when it wasn't going to happen. I'd have to refigure the cost and see what we need for a breakeven point and then go from there. Does that sound fair to you?

great idea steve!! tony, sounds like a good possibliity, i think he means $75 each day, $150 total. thats what i got out of it.

Yea, I meant $75 each day. Instead of an all or nothing track price...I was just thinking of some middle ground where everybody will still jump at the chance to pay some of the pricetag and still feel like they got a great deal that they can't get elsewhere. If that were the case, you could probably do one each year and not lose any money (pending sponsor payments of course).

Thanks y'all for the input. We are still trying to go to plan A so just hold off till we get it figured out. Now if we could get about 80 people to go at $150.00 for the weekend then it's a done deal. I don't think you all realize that these things are not cheap. On average, it runs anywhere from $12,500.00 to $15,000.00 to rent a track for the weekend depending on where you go. VIR would be closer to $20,000.00. Please give us till the first of the year and maybe we can take a poll to see how many would truly commit to going if we did do a $150.00 weekend price.
Thanks, ;)

$150 for 2 days! I'm committed! (as long as it's a carolinas area track.) I've been wanting to buy a car trailer. Now's the time I guess.;)

I hope to make this event my first school and open track experience! I have a couple questions if someone has time.
What tires should I bring with me? I should have a new set of victoracers by then on my spare set of wheels.
Do I need to wait for my member number before sending in the event registration or can I just enter pending until I have it?
Thanks.

Calvin_1976 asked: What tires should I bring with me?
If it's your first open track experience - change the brake fluid, put on new pads, check your lug nuts - and stick with your current (stock) tires... you'll learn much more with tires that don't have as much grip!!!
Calvin_1976
12-26-2002, 03:47 PM
I guess I should have said I have been autocrossing for the last year and spent that entire year on street tires to learn what the car will not do or rather what it will do on street tires. Do you still think I should start on street tires? I really want to get away from street tires and move up to something with some grip. Brake fluid, pads, and lug nuts have become a habit before events already and I always carry extra fluids and pads.
cobrabitn
12-26-2002, 07:16 PM
Go with exactly what Jim said. Stick with a good set of street tires, change the fluid and pads, and keep the sunny side up.
You don't have to wait for your membership number to pay for the event; however, it may benefit you somewhere down the road when you sign up. ;)
Hope this helps out? :bounce:
wildhorsesracin
12-26-2002, 10:26 PM
Autocrossing is a good start, you have learned the technique of crisis management in the car. But you'll find that your car will probably out run you in your first high speed event, don't worry, after a few events you'll catch up with it, we all do!!!
I can safely say that I thought I knew how to drive until I went to my first OTC, then I realized that I have a long way to go... and still do!!! It is a constant learning process, and once you get a taste for the track you'll be addicted to that learning process!!
Feel free to stop by anytime that weekend and I'll be glad to take you out and give you some pointers about CMP. I've driven a few hundred miles or so on that track!

We had a good time huh Jeff? ;) I wouldn't call them warm laps though. I had Pokey wide open at 95 mph so that tells me Fireball should hit triple digits with ease. His brakes were telling me that two laps on that course and you better have your brakes in good shape. I will admit, you will need to bring a couple of extra brake pads sets with you.
Going out to eat at Ryan's was fun too Jeff. We will have all of the information completed this weekend for the event so some of you can start downloading the event packet.
Jeff, thanks again for helping me with my surround system. I really appreciate it. It was fun watching the Matrix in its entirety at full sound. I thought the walls were going to rock....

Yeah, you've gotta have your brakes in good shape for CMP. I had brake fade a few times coming into turn 1. It's scary when you push the pedal and it stops with only about 25% of its normal stopping power.
I had stainless lines installed before I went to CMP, and even had new fluid put in, but I didn't know the quality of the fluid made a difference. I had boilover a few times from "riding" the brakes too much on the first day. Don't use cheapo quaker state fluid. I hear the ford heavy duty is pretty good(which is what I'm going to use). Yeah, and bring an extra set of pads just in case. :)

Carbotech is testing a new brake compound this weekend at Seabring and it MIGHT be available by next week for sale. If not they recommend the Panther Plus compound for our cars at CMP. They are one of our Club Vendors and we get a 10% discount from them. I haven't used their pads yet but Tom Lewis seems to think they are good.

I ran their pads all last year - they are definitely a better quality pad.
http://www.carbotecheng.com/main.htm
CMP will eat brakes, I wasted a set of new rear pads there last August - in one 18 lap race!!!!
Also, you might want to consider venting air to your front brakes somehow, that makes a world of difference when it comes to fade...

Hey Greg!!!! I have a set of Panther Plus pads for track use. They will destroy rotors, but I don't think any more than any other track pad. They will stop 100% better than stock pads when they are warmed up. Very expensive, but worth it IMO.
Will be fun to have 2 white "01's" on the track at CMP, of course, I'll have the "Baby White Lightning"
Gonna be a blast. *Btw Greg and anyone that needs a place to stay is welcome to stay at our house, since we're only 20 minutes from CMP. We have 2 extra bedrooms. Cheaper than Jameson Inn, and the food and beer is much better. (Nudges Greg :)

That's a hell of an offer there Craig!! But I don't think your lovely wife wants a bunch of us track junkies hanging around the house! ;) I could however be talked into bringing some steaks over for grillin' and beer! :D :D ;)
On the subject of brakes I have cryo treated Brembo rotors and I don't think anything will eat them! I haven't been able to wear them down at all after two sets of Hawk pads! :D I'm going to have them turned the new Carbotech pads and high temp fluid put in before the drag day just so I don't have to worry about it! ;) ;) :D

Tony, anything would be fine with me. We can eat there, then everyone can come back here for a drink or two and some relaxation. Actually, I probably won't feel much like cooking after the long day, so your idea might be better. I can talk to Ryans if that's what everyone wants to do, but there is a better place called Jomars on Hwy9 also(2 back up HWY 9 from Ryans). It's buffet style, and should suit most. They have a private dining room also. I'll help out any way I can.

***BTW, you guys have fun at the meeting tommorow. I've gotta be at work at 8AM, so don't forget to mention another possible "Dyno day" in Columbia like we did last year at ATS. For those of you beginner to intermediate drivers like myself, there is a test of 3 popular "max performance" tires on Tirerack.com. I have the newest Kumho MX that came out about 6 months ago, and I love them. It's one step below the Victoracers, but a step above the popular "712's". There are finally some user reviews there also(tirerack.com). All have been very positive in relation to open track situations. Not that I work for Kumho or anything, but I know some people might be needing some new tires before CMP(those who aren't yet ready for DOT track tires). Just thought I'd point out a link or two.
Tire is priced well also. Mine have worn very nicely.

I'm still wanting to come to this event provided I get the car together in time. I know I've got a couple months yet... but I'm having trouble getting some parts that I've already paid for. I'll let you know what happens with it to keep you updated.

I am probably going to use a set of Sumitomo HTR Zs. I am already used to them and used a set for autocross last year.

Tony, how do I make a topic "sticky", I posted a new message under upcoming event's but it just gets lost. :)
We've got a Dyno day planned for February 15th at ATS Performance in Columbia, SC. Hope those of you in the area are available to come see how those mods have affected your horsepower since last years dyno day.
ATS Performance 6001 Two Notch Rd. Columbia, SC 29223
It will be $40 for 2 pulls.
We'll meet at ATS at 9:30 AM that morning, and get started at 10AM.
Hope everyone can attend

Todd, you have a rollbar so you do not have to be in the lead/follow group.
If a car does not have a rollbar then they are in a lead/follow group with no passing and a controlled speed. There may be a few "newbie" coupes in this group too, depending on turnout.
Let me know if you need anything else Todd?:D

Thanks Tony, I was really asking about it for other people w/o bars.
I think people like this or other newbies that might be in this group need to know that before they sign up. I'd be pretty upset if I signed up for it and then when I arrived was told I'd have to do lead/follow.
Just my $.02

The southern folk don't know much about "real" winters, unless their from the north. 1 to 3 inches isn't enough to cancel anything up here, but when you have no snow removal equipment, that's a different story.
8 degrees tomorrow huh...we're having a heat wave, it's gonna be a whole 11 degrees here tomorrow!! ;) I here it might get into the 40's next week...I'm gonna have to break out the shorts!! :D

SIUNARA-I live in Boone, NC (elevation 3,500ft) and they still call off school all the time. I guess the reason they cancel school all the time is because of the small mountainous roads that people will have to travel.
However, Appalachian State has on cancelled class 5, maybe 6 times in its history! Soooo, that means I have class tomorrow, our high is only 14, not too far off PA!
Take it easy, enjoy the heatwave and break out the Hawaiian shirts and flops.:D

He also manages a performance shop in Winston-Salem and is a distributor of some automotive addative product which I can't remember the name of right now. I know what you mean...I grew up in Cleveland, OH and school never closed! But here in Asheville they are very well prepared for snow and the roads are very curvy and hilly!! Makes for alot of fun when they get snow on them... and then mix in people who don't know how to drive on snow and watch the FUN BEGIN! :D ;)

our daughter did that same thing last winter with her GT --
needless to say, the GT is in storage for this winter!!
She got a little cocky and found out what it was like to do some spins right thru a major intersection ... cop sitting right there ofcourse.....
she got a ticket and she deserved it... going too fast for conditions....
I'd say she's learned allot since then ... actually, she takes after me, only, I didn't get caught. It was with a 70 Mach I on black ice and fortunately no one was around to notice my disaster .....

Hey everybody! I am Tom Griffin SVT Coordinator with Bob Bennet Ford in Columbia, SC. I am planning on being at this on track event with my 03 Cobra Coupe. I would like to thank you all for the invitation to have some real track time with my car. This post is to tell you about Tech Inspection Day at Bob Bennett Ford on March 8th. We are planning on having an SVT Certified Tech on hand to perform the tech inspection prior to this event. We are working on reduced pricing at this time for SVTOA and SCMC members. Do not have the pricing yet, but I will post it as soon as I get it. I am also trying to work out some special pricing with our parts dept for other parts that are needed! Please reply to this post or tomsgarage@aol.com if you are planning on coming by so we can schedule enough time.
Again, thanks for the invitation, and look out for an 03 Mineral Gray Coupe on track!;)

Hey Brad,
I saw your Cobra at TB back in December...I haven't seen you in a while. I see you took the plunge and went unnaturally aspirated! I bet you love it! How is your car reacting to the new power, I see you have some bugs to work out.
Try www.racerwholesale.com for a helmet.

We are having a Tech Inspection day at Bob Bennett Ford in Columbia, SC for any members who need their SVT vehicle inspected before the on track event at Carolina Motorsports Park. The inspection will be on March 8th. We are planning on having a couple of SVT trained techs on hand to do the inspection. After reviewing the inspection sheet with our service manager, we have been able to get some special pricing for the inspection. The inspection will take an hour and a half to two hours to perform and the charge will be $59.95. This charge is to cover the cost of the techs who will do the service. In other words Bob Bennett Ford is doing this as a service to SVTOA and SCMC members!
If you are interested in attending this tech inspection, please reply to this post, email me at tomsgarage@aol.com or call me at 1-800-868-3673.

If you live in the Charlotte area and want to get your car inspected then you can make an appointment at Young Ford who will do our tech inspections for $25.00 per car. Please call ahead of time and make the appointment. Any date/time is fine with them.
If you have any questions, contact Bobby Cox at wcoxsr@carolina.rr.com or ask for Richard Young if you have any problems. Anyone going to our event is welcome to get their car done, just tell them you are with the SCMC and they will take care of you.
Hope this helps out!

Dammit dammit dammit!
I THOUGHT was finally gonna get to finish up the SVO this weekend (gotta install the turbo and finish installing the front suspension, only a full weekends work) and now my Merkur (my daily driver) has developed a wicked tapping in the valve train!
Dammit! I juust knew I was gonna be able to finish it for next weekend and be able to attend the open track event as well. To top it off, found out today that I've got to schedule some work for next weekend. There's no way I can finish the SVO, break in the Stage III clutch, get the 3" exhaust put on, and work out any bugs that are sure to pop up by the open track event. Seems like I'll NEVER get the SVO finished for a track event. If it isn't for work or something breaking... again, dammit dammit dammit!:mad:

Just got back from CMP where I got to meet Mickey Clyburn and get a tour of the track, what a place! Michelin was there doing some tire testing, and when they took their lunch break Mickey drove me around the track in his truck. This is going to be fun! It is a great facility, the track is awesome, fast, but also a challenge in the corners! I especially like the sweeping coner that leads to the back staight away! Can't wait to get my Cobra on track!
I checked with him on camping and he said there is no charge from CMP, that it was included in the rental of the track. I hope to get there Friday night for inspection at the Jamison Inn, if not I will be camping at the track with my Dad, and will be first in line for inspection and registration Saturday morning. He plans to get to the track about 5:00 pm Friday to set up his motorhome. I am wondering if he needs to be on a registration list to get in the track? Any info will be helpful. The camping is free "IF" there are no more than 10 people camping. "IF" There are more than 10 people camping then it is $30 per camper. This IS a SCMC- CMP agreement . If anyone has any questions e-mail Tony or myself!!

As John said, if we have ten or less then it is free but if we have more then it will cost each person $30.00 per night.
The SCMC is passing this savings on to you this year because it was passed on to us. This will most likely be a one time deal for campers as most renters at CMP charge for camping, and the SCMC will follow suit.
Maybe some of you know and maybe some of you don't but this event costs the SCMC well over $12,000.00 and we have to make sure our events pay for themselves. We as a club have a choice, pay less and have a crowded track or pay a little more and have some breathing room. I hope all of you will feel free to give us some feedback when all is said and done.
Let's go have some fun! :bounce:

Only members can have riders, period. Only in A,B, and C classes.
Here is the schedule I have so far unless we get a few more to come: (note: this schedule is subject to change the day of the event, depending on participants)

We will probably add a few more people but we are capping this thing at 80 total participants/cars. Right now we have 64 and I think that's a good number for manageability. Biggest turnout for an SCMC event!

Tim,
Take I-20 past Columbia to Camden. Get off I-20 at Hwy 521 exit. Take Hwy 521 north towards Camden. Stay on Hwy 521 thru Camden and go another 25 miles or so. Track will be on right kinda out in the middle of nowhere.
I'm bringing my silver '02 Z06 so I'll see you there.

thanks, mapquest had me going up to charlotte, and then south, seemed kinda out of the way.
I don't like the drive to charlotte with all of the construction, rather take a back road, I will follow your advice, see you there

Poolman I'm not heading out of Asheville until 3:30 pm. I have to wait until my son gets out of School. That puts me down in Spartanburg around 4:30. If you want to wait till then I would be glad for the company on the road! :D

Tomorrow looks cloudy, but by Saturday, a wave of low pressure develops to our south. This moves our way, bringing rain back to our neighborhoods Friday night and lasting through Sunday morning.
Temperatures will struggle in the low to middle 50s with a chance of Saturday being washed out by rain.
Sunday afternoon looks dry but cloudy. We won't see significant sunshine again until Monday.
