I have recently purchased a 99 svt mustang cobra convertible. I received a recall notice for the rear knuckle to be replaced. I was wondering if anyone has had this done and if it will in anyway improve on the aggravating wheel hop I have been experiencing? If I understand what I have read on this, it seems this rear knuckle is part of the suspension. And that it could possible move forward or backward and crack. So I am assuming the new kit will stabilize the knuckle. Is this correct? Any info on the rear knuckle and wheel hop would be very helpful. I can't see how putting a supercharger on this car would help any, if I can't keep the wheels on the ground. Any advice?

The IRS knuckle recall is something you should have done, but It won't help the wheel hop. Mine is still stock and will hop like mad, so I don't launch real hard. Some others may answer but I've seen where lowering springs help and the Pauls Pinion brace seem to work pretty well. This is an inherent issue with the IRS (anyones).

Tony/ Dave S. ? your thoughts?

BTW, are you in Charlotte?

Knuckle replacement will not help wheel hop. I had to have this done, #1 because it was recalled, and #2 because one of mine actually cracked. All it seems to do is stabalize the rear end. When mine cracked, the rear end would sway like I was on a boat getting rocked around by the waves. Very sea sick type of feeling. To remedy the wheel hop, you'll have to look at replacing at least the springs, shocks, and getting an IRS brace. You could do it piece by piece but I've heard different results from different people, but with mine I plan to go all the way.

To reduce/eliminate wheel hop you must lower the car at least 1.5 inches. I have KB springs and virtually no wheel hop. I can launch at 3500 rpms and at times start spinning but not hopping. It does skitter when I shift gears. If you are on the street this is the way to go because you will have zero hop! If you are going to the strip then you will want a set of drag radials.

I do not have a brace but I do have Steeda IRS bushings to eliminate bushing slop.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for all of your answers. I am from st. louis, MO. This is all a bit new to me, so bear with me. I have a few more questions. i plan to take your advise and get the springs, bushings, and irs brace put on. But I also do want to add a supercharger. I am concerned that after I put this on and increase the hp, that I will be back in the same boat and have the wheel hop issue again. Has anyone added a supercharger after fixing the wheel hop? Did the wheel hop problem return?

Dave S., chime in..... Dave's 99 rio red vert (my twin on steroids) is blown (vortech I think) and he has a few other goodies, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have the problem.

A supercharger will not make a difference. Lower the car and put the bushings and brace on and you will virtually eliminate your wheel hop. If anything, the supercharger will cause you to spin more, not hop.

I took a ride in Greg Oswell's '01 cobra. I don't know what all he's got on there suspension wise, but that thing pulled like a monster, and didn't expirience any wheel hop at all while i was in there with him. Dang sweet ride if I may say!

Thanks DUDE!! BUT we really didn't smack the gas! :D ;) I have the full KB setup plus a torque brace and I haven't had a real problem with hop but I will say that spinning the TIRES can be a real problem!

:D :D

Well, you're welcome. It's a sweet ride that's for sure. Sounds to me like smooth application of the throttle will solve the wheel hop issue!!:D I hear ya on the tire spinning problem. No full throttle pulls til high second gear here!
