I used Kazza and downloaded it through that, came with the registration key and all. You can download it through their site for $29.95 www.stopzilla.com

On edit:
They do have a free trail of it on their site too so you can see if its what you want

go to www.pcworld.com/downloads and look around a little to find one that suits your needs. there are several free ones available. I use popup stopper at work. At home, my ISP, Earthlink, has a built in utility for it.

The pop up stoppers are for ads. ever visit a website and have lots of other windows open up on you? The pop up blockers will stop that from happening for the most part. If you are getting instant messages, it is from an instant messaging program. Look in the lower right had corner of you tool bar, there will probably be an icon for the messaging program, glide the mouse over them and it should say what is what, find the messaging one, right click over it and then select exit or close.

Download a program called Adware

What it does is scans you PC and then tells you of known cookies that have been placed on your system that Advertisers luv to use to target us.

I installed it and used it to remove anything that "GAIN" would use to pop up ads on my system. No more :D

Go to this website and get the free version w/ updates. It works very well. PopUp Stopper Free Edition (http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html)
Another free program that includes free updates is Ad-Aware. It is a spyware tool that looks for spyware and ad-ware. Ad-Aware (http://www.lsfileserv.com/software/adaware/)

Quick question, what OS are you running? Win9x, WinNT, Win2k or WinXP? 2k and XP have a 'messenger service' enable by default that allows messages between users in a workgroup. People have found ways to exploit this and send message/ads to your computer.

It's a built-in service in the OS and it just needs to be turned off.

EXACTLY! Had that same problem myself and then I turned the dang thing off. Never used it anyway.

John,

I have fooled around with a lot of these programs. I would recommend getting norton internet security. You have to buy it if you don't want to steal it from Kazaa, but it block all pop ups, and is a firewall, and antivirus in one. Best around in my opinion. I have to disable it to upload to my website, and I always know when I forget to turn it back on, because I start getting pop ups. It also has email spam killer software, and you configure rules, or bar certain senders.

also to check your computer for spyware, the best program out there is spybot search and destroy.

if you run this program you will be surprised how much crap you have on your computer. As mentioned above, ad software like gain take you to their sponsors when you search on search engines. So if you searched for camshafts on yahoo, the results would prioritized according to their sponsors.
