I stopped at Pep Boys today to buy a locking gas cap for my 04 Cobra. I looked at their parts book and at the caps they had and didn't find one that would fit.

So.... I stopped at my nearest Ford dealership to buy a locking cap and talked to the parts guy. He looked it up and said there wasn't one out for the 04 Cobra. So I say well no problem, I think that the 03 Cobra's and 04 Cobras are identical so sell me one that fits an 03. The parts guy says to me he can't do that, that the gas cap is part of the smog system and even if he had an 03 locking gas cap he couldn't sell it to me for use on my 04.

So... I search on line, still can't find a locking gas cap. So now to the questions:

Does any out there in Cobra land use a locking gas cap? If so where did you get it?

Was the parts guy yankin' my chain about the gas cap thing? The only modern car I've owned over the past few years had a locking gas door so I haven't looked for a locking cap on a smog car. Is this true?

I kept expecting the guy to ask me if I had lubed my muffler bearings recently.

I'm beginning to think that I must still smell like a GM owner or something. I'm gonna have to stand in the exhaust fumes of the Cobra to get some blue oval funk going.

well... he is telling the truth about one thing, the gas cap is parts of the emissions of the car. The car actually will throw a check engine code if the gas cap does not properly seal, and you can fail emission is some parts if you have faulty gas cap.

As far as not selling you an 03 cap for an 04, that part may or may not be true.. I don't know the laws involved. But it may not matter, as I have never really seen a locking gas cap for any model mustang.

What I have seen are locking fuel doors. MGW Ltd. makes the best one out there. Here is the link, it is top notch.

I believe you can get it painted to match the car also:rotf:.. may wanna call and ask george.

There are other cheaper made option of the locking fuel door out there..

5.0 Resto has a powered one also

George will have a hard time matching Mystichrome... :rotf:

Thanks for the info. I'll research those. It's gonna take me a while to get use to these new fangled cars.

I live in a beach town in Southern California. Where I live has the same qualities as a breakfast cereal... it's chock full of nuts, fruits and flakes. :D I can say that because I live here and probably fall into the first and third category.

Anyway people here do strange stuff. One night I was awoken at 3:00am to the sound of my mail box being assaulted by a drugged out idiot with a baseball bat. This scum had walked the length of the street smashing mail boxes. Since mine was the last on the street he gave it extra attention. Even know the Cobra will be parked in the garage you never know what will happen at the store or post office!

I recently heard about two local people that got keyed. One guy has a viper and they keyed "gas pig" into the paint. The other drives a Toyota Prius (hybrid) and they keyed "tree hugger" on the hood.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that people aren't out to get me.:D

Hey! Southern CA?! cool! What beach town?

On another note, i use a stant locking gas cap on my 94. i dont know if its the same thread pattern for the newer ones or not. i would just recommend taking the cap off and comparing it to the locking ones at Autozone or wherever you buy parts. You are right, its nice to have for those jack asses who see a nice car and heard from their friends its fun to put crap in the gas tank. i have had friends that have had their gas siphoned too! Good luck finding one, im sure they make one.

Hey Aaron -

The town I live in is called Encinitas. Great place to live but we have our fair share of village idiots....

Cool, i have been thru there. I have work done to my car at JBA Racing down in San Diego sometimes. Im just up the 15, in Riverside. would you be up for a possible San Bernardino mountains drive some time in the near future? i've been itching to drive up to big bear.

You bet I'd be up for a twisty drive. I love the drive to Big Bear, very fun! Because of tax season my weekends are gonna be tied up until after April 15th. That will also give me time to break in the motor. I'm definately not blowing you off. I think it would me very fun to go on a cruise. I have another friend that has a 68 Mustang Fastback with a Paxton supercharger that would probably love to cruise with us also. Email me and we can arrange it (email address in profile).

I use to go to the Route 66 Rendezvous every year in San Bernardino near your neck of the woods. Ever been there?

Right on! I would love to see that stang. We will have to plan something some time after april then. I have some friends that i drive with sometimes, although i would say they all but cruise. There are a couple serious drivers... I revently went on a drive thru Malibu Canyons, check out this link for some photo's.

i will keep you posted on any drives we go in the future, just in case you have a free day by chance. And if you do want to go up the mountain on short notice, just shoot me an email.

Yea i have been to the Route 66 show a few times, always a good turn out. My step dad cruised his 1990 Corvette ZR-1 in it a long time ago when he first got it...

On another note, i am planning to make the drive back to Pigeon Forge TN, if you have been seeing things about that on the site here. I will probably spend a couple days doing the SCMC events, but i am trying to plan like a 9 day road trip. June 19th - 27th. I dont know much about driving cross country, but i am going to read up as much as i can, and talk to a few people. If you wanted to take a vacation and caravan with me, let me know...

Very cool photos. What kind of cars are the little yellow and red roadsters? We'll definately plan a jaunt up the mountain in May.

As far as cross country - been there done that. Before becoming a blue oval guy I had a 72 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible complete with a 455, hurst dual-gate shifter, 4bbl carb, dual exhaust, 3:42 posi, the whole nine yards. Anyway, I drove that car in the 2000 Hot Rod Power Tour. I went from the left coast to the right coast and back. About 6,300 miles. I can give you some pointers regarding long distance travel!

The red one is a Catterham Super 7, the yellow is pretty much the same thing, but a different manufacturer. They are pretty cool little kit cars. not pictured, but on the drive with us was one that was all raced out, cosworth motor. i think he said it weighed something like 1300 lbs with him in it! 0-60 in like 3.3 secs. the suspension and chassis is a lotus design i believe. they handle like go karts literally. the red one just has a ztec focus motor, im sure not to focus specs... but still gets up and goes because its so light. I would appreciate any info on long distance travel, i could use all the info i can get!

Hey Venum,

Yea we do need to set something up. Are you a member too? you should join up, it easily pays for itself if you order one item thru one of our vendors.

Looks like i might be going to Buttonwillow March 5 with some friends. Its a speedventures event, and i guess they have lots of different things going all day, for drivers with varying levels of experience. this is good for me, as i have none. if you want to go to that, let me know and i will give ya more information as i get it.

Aaron,

If you want to set up a club cruise, then let me have the details and we can send it out to the other CA members. ;)

Thanks,

Tony

I'll look around for my Power Cruise notes. I was planning on making it an annual event so I wrote myself some notes (once I hit 40 I had to write myself notes  ) on how to make it easier.

03 Venum:

It reminds me of the line in Pulp Fiction... "you just don't *^%# with another man's car." If I caught a punk vandalizing one of my cars I would have to place a call to Johnny Cochran immediately after because the guy would be extinct.

I've been considering setting up one of those PC cameras to look out my window and record my car at night. Maybe one with motion sensor would save on the GB of data it would collect.
Should be cheaper than an old school video camera w/VCR.

Have you guys thought of this? Anyone done this?

The "other" Mystic Cobra....

Mystic_:

Luckily my car sits in the garage most of the time. I worry more about it at shopping centers, etc. That's where one of the keying events took place.

Oh by the way I didn't mean to steal your name. When I first signed in I put in the name and it was assigned to me. I didn't look at the member roster for similar names. My bad. I appologize.

The good thing is though if you ever post something that you later regret just blame it on me.:D
