need help choosing brake pads

hello everyone, i havent been around here in quite a long time so no one probably knows me. so hi :)
anyways i need to buy new pads, like right now! my 93 cobra has the front baer track kit installed(pbr calipers) with stock rear brake setup. im not sure what type of pads the previous owner has installed. they produce alot of brake dust. say normal to semi-spirited driving for 200 miles and my wheels are gray. i dont track the car as of now, but will probably try my first auto X this summer. what brands and types do you guys recommend? which ones to stay away from?

I've used the Carbotech pads on my Cobra and I just recently used them on my Focus at the SCMC event last week. They perform awesome and are wonderful pads. I used the 1108's on the Cobra and I used the 1109 on the front of the Focus and 1106 on the rear. To be honest, I'm not real sure which ones are best for your car being mostly a street car, but a call to Larry at CarboTech will fix you up.

Carbotech are the bomb!! I have never used a pad that stops a car quicker than theirs! Dale from Custom Performance drove my car with the Carbotech pads on it and he thought I had upgraded the calipers!! NOT SO, just the pads make a HUGE difference in stopping distance! :thumbsup:

I also used Carbotech's on my Focus and was very pleased with the results after some hard braking at CMP. I would stay away from a Performance Friction Z pad even though they are a good deal. I found them to be inconsistent when using them for autox and open tracking. Hawk makes some good pads (HP and HP+) that would be appropriate for your use. You could also try Cobalt...they make great pads as well. Choices, choices... :D

No problem Bryan. The only experience I have is stock pads on the Cobra PBR's, Hawk blues and blacks and the Carbotech 1106, 1108 and 1109. I've also heard really good things about Cobalt. There's a lot of Cobalt followers on this board that should chime in on what you're looking for.

thanks guys, yea choices choices at least now i have a few companys to look at. i know you guys probably go through pads like there going out of style, and i know a performance pad and the word longetivity probably shouldnt be used in the same sentence but are some better than others for life expectency? i know this is a oxy-moron :D

The Carbotech last very well, at least the set I have, however they do grove the rotors! My pads are race pads though, I would call Carbotech and tell them the application you want to use them for and they will hook you up. :thumbsup:

I use Performance Friction 01 pads on the front and PF90's on the rear of my 2000 Cobra R with good results. I also use Castrol SRF brake fluid. It is expensive but I sure like it. The main advice I can give on brakes is to make sure you bleed them before each event. It is not fun to have them fade all of a sudden at the end of a long straight.

i too use pf01 pads front and rear.

however, these are only for the track (not street or autox) as they need heat to work well. but i will tell you (and i've used hawks and galphers) nothing hauls my car down faster and consistently as these. (i use these in both my cars).

thanks guys i appreciate the great info. i think what im gonna do is get the hawk hps for everyday use(i can get them for $50). then when i do decide on a auto-x or something, put in something a bit more aggressive. what do you think?
ok heres my stupid question of the day (were all intittled to 1 right :D )
when people say hawk blues,blacks are they refering to hps and hp+ ??

The order of Hawk pads goes like this...from least aggressive (street friendly) to most aggressive (not street friendly)...

HPS
HP+
Black
Blue
HT-10

The Black, Blue, and HT-10 are race compound pads that will dust like a mother on the street, make lots of noise, and chew your rotors up (when cold). The two you can use on the street, for autox, and occasional track use are the HPS and HP+. In my opinion, Carbotech does a better job of combining the best of both worlds into one pad, which is not easy to do. Check out their website and look at the bobcat compound, it sounds like that is the most appropriate pad for what you're looking for. With the bobcat you won't have to swap pads or spend money on another set down the road. :)
