I am on the market for an SVT Cobra either a 99' or 01'. I did look on the ford SVT website and compared the two models, they look pretty much alike. Can you please help me out and tell me any major differences or do you have an opinion on either of the two? Which direction should i head in? Also if i did get a 99' is there any way you can tell a 99 from an 01? Please help me out here, thanks

Drew

I can't afford a 03, so basically what i also want to ask is, is buying a 99 or 01 SVT Cobra worth it?

There are cosmetic differences between the 99 and the 01 that set them apart to a true Cobra enthusiast.

The 99s dynod lower power than what Ford had advertised(320hp), thus had a "Fix" applied to them at the dealerships to bring them up to par with what the 01's came with. If buying a 99, make sure it has had the fix.

Other differences.

99 clear headlights / 01 smoked headlights
99 satin wheels / 01 mostly polished wheels with some satin ones out there
99 standard two component (one radio and one single cd) Mach 460 / 01 6 disk in dash CD player Mach 460
99 standard GT type leather seats / 01 bolstered, sportier leather seats with Alcantara (suede looking material) inserts
99 t-45 transmission / 01 t-3650 transmission (3650 is supposidly more durable but both had their fair share of problems)
99 IRS with weaker 28 spline halfshafts / 01 IRS with a little bit stronger 31 spline halfshafts
99 spoiler different than the 01
99 bumper says "Mustang" / 01 bumper says "Cobra"
there were rumors of slight inconsiquential engine differences.

having said that, the seats, tranny and IRS components are the biggest difference.

If you plan on swapping out some of the advantages of the 01, you would have more MOD money with the 99 since there is a big price difference, but that comes with having more age, and sometimes more abuse.

Welcome to the board and good luck

Well i have been looking and have seen both 99 and 01 SVT Cobras for good prices. One more question i had, if you had both a 99 and 01 cobra, and the 99 is fixed from the recall it had. Would the cobras be the same performance wise?
Thanks

i have a 99 that was made after the fix date or whatever. I have raced my friends 01 and ther is like no diffrance. this was ebfore i did the things to it. I got a new rear bumper so it says cobra. i like that a lot better. the seats i have to say that i like the 01's better just because they are made for the cobras not the GT's and cobra. just my thoughts.

they both esentially put down the same power(with the 99 fix). and in both years, there is a little variance in power. By that I mean some that are a little slower than others and some that are factory freaks..

Firme, i see that you have an 01 Cobra. Buying either a 99' or 01' is very important and i want to make sure i buy the right one. Would you be just as satisfied with a 99'? Im really stuck right now even though you guys have told me the minor differences. Thanks again for all the help.

if you go to the main page for the club, look under member cars, Tony Sorrentino, there is a picture, and his email address. It is a really nice car, well taken care of.

Thanks for the plug Mike. I just drove the 99 to Nashville for the 40th and had absolutely no problems turning 25K miles on it. I believe we will get some members out of that event as well as some people going to our 5th Anniversary. Beveryly, Steve, and I ran out of membership applications and wished we had more to give out. It was an exciting event but now is the time for the fun event in Pigeon Forge, TN.... the SCMC 5th Anniversary! :bounce:

Pics of my 99 Cobra....it's no slouch!

So are you selling your Cobra? If so how much and have you done anything else to it? I guess just give me a price and specs. Thanks

Shocker, let me ask you this. What do you plan on doing with the car?

Me personally, I would have a hard time taking a 99 for 3 simple reasons.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, only 01's offer Mineral Grey, I was thinking about getting an 03 up until the point that the stopped making mineral grey (DS is not the same)
I like the smoked headlights and cobra bumper but both could be easily swapped
I like the seats much better than the 99, but if I had a 99, I would get the light weight Corbeau (sp?) VX2000 seats that look just like the 01's, but are a ton ligher, and they are racing seats.

so basically, I ask again, what do you plan on doing with the car, because some of the differences are easily modifiable.(is that a word?)

Good point, i never really thought of it that way. I can swap out parts on a 99' to make it look more like a 01'. I do want the cobra bumber and smoked head lights. Thanks

How many miles. And where would the best place be to buy lights, body kits, seats, mainly cosmetic stuff for a 99 or 01 cobra?

It has 25,500 miles on it and I recommend Late Model Restoration for your aftermarket parts. See banner above or go to www.50resto.com

I'm going to be honest with you. I talked to two people today about the 99 and 2 people about the 94 Cobra this weekend. I will sell either one of them to the first person that buys one from me. If I still have the 99 in May, you are more then welcome to drop by and have a look. Which ever one sells first, will determine which one I will keep with the other two Cobras I have. :)

I think im going to head towards an 01 thats black. Correct me if im wrong, all the 01s have a bumper that says cobra and cobras on the seats and rugs right?

No snakes on the carpet, that is an aftermarket thing. Cobra on the bumper and snakes on the seats though!

I am going to get a black on black 01' Cobra. I have been looking around and surprisingly I have found a few of them to choose from. I will not be racing this cobra, but yeah ill have my fun with it. How much does a hard-top weigh in comparison to a convertible. If for some reason I do want to upgrade the engine and make it faster will the weight factor come into play? And no as of now I do not have a preference on a hard-top or convertible.

I did know that the convertible was heavier. I was asking how much heavier, like an actual weight. Oh yeah and where can you get those aftermarket cobra rugs and cosmetic cobra stuff? Thanks for your replies

I believe it is 200-250 lbs heavier for a vert. You can get the cobra rugs from http://secure.50resto.com/product1.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=1603&Category_ID=1128

As far as cosmetic stuff, what specifically do you want? As far as interior accent pieces, http://www.mgwltd.com/mustang.html is the place to get them. George's parts surpass any of his competition. But you better hurry, because Ford just pulled their licensing from the aftermarket, so he will no longer be able to use official ford logo's on his products.

I gave the buyer an application and told him about the club. I'll let him make up his own mind to join for reasons not to be discussed on this BB.

Thanks,

Yeah, reinforced to compensate for the ragtop. The sales guy told me the '03/'04 vert is about 400 lbs heavier than the coupe. We were looking at the Mystic Chrome vert on the sales floor at the time.

Right Tony?????Amen to that! Even with the 250-300lb difference, the Cobra can still blow the doors off probably 90% of the cars you'd possiably run into in every day driving.

Here's food for thought....You can always bolt on more power to this engine. However, if you decide you want a convertible at some point, looks like you're.....stuck :banghead:

If you were totally looking to make it a 10, or even 11 second dragster, a coupe would be a no brainer...but since you claim that you won't be racing on tracks...well...just think about it

Don't jump the gun!
