I have posted this in the lounge forum, but thought I would also post this here. I just bought an '04 and have a question. I have a quiet grinding noise coming from the transmission through what sounds like the shifter, when I'm taking off in 1st gear (slowly) and it also does when I'm in 2nd gear going around a corner slowly, is this normal? I can't remember if my '01 did this or not. I haven't been studying up on these '03/'04's since I didn't have one or think I ever would for a long time, but the good wife of mine got me an early christmas present :)

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to everybody and happy new year

Congrats on the 04. I have very much the same noise on mine and it becomes louder if I put my hand on the shifter. What you hear is probably normal and of course it will have a different sound since the trans is quite different than the T3650 that was in the Cobra. That transmission made more of a whine than the gear mesh noise you hear at low rpm. That makes me wonder if there are any planetary gears in the T56 which would at least account for the noise. Even after 3800 miles it still makes that noise in 1st, 2nd and don't forget reverse. I hear it more so in 1st gear and reverse than any other gears. At first I thought there was no fluid in the transmission since I had issues shifting or getting it into 1st gear at a stand still. After countless adjustments on the clutch pedal, things seem perfect and I have yet to experience any problems or miss any gears. I am definately considering installing the MGW shifter and possibly change the trans fluid too. Have fun with your new Cobra. Merry Christmas too. If I get coal for Christmas, can I use it for fuel?

My 03 does the same thing. Real bad in 1st if you drive it normal. 2nd has just a litte noise. Under hard acceleration you dont hear it as much. My local dealer is going to look at it after the first of the year. Talking to the service manager he thought we would change the fluid first and go from there. He also said we mite have to replace the whole transmission to get rid of the noise. I will post back on this when i take it in.

mine does it also. i heard that it is normal b/c of the type of transmission. i also heard that the corvette has the same grinding sound.

Thanks Guys,

Hey Ausie, let me know if you get coal and it if works for a gas :D

Jack, if you could let me know what the dealer says or does I would appreciate it.

I guess I will have to find a corvette owner and see if they have the same noise.

Merry Christmas all!

I just bought my 04 in October. I have put about 1000 miles on it so far. The tranny has been noisey since day one. I traded in a 02 TransAM WS6 that had zero tranny noise with 45,000 miles on it. Needless to say I was concerned about the issue. I took it in to Ford and they said it was "normal" . I've gotten used to it now and hardly hear it anymore. Hope this helps. Have had no complaints other than that with the 04. It's an amazing ride!

I had a 93 and bought a 6 speed from D&D and it was quiet. AUSIE i have the MGW shifter with the red handle and really like it. No missed shifts. Great bolt on.

Thanks Tony,

All I can say is that when I drive it, I grin from ear to ear :D This car is amazing. I can't believe the power difference from the '01, even with my mods. And soon for the '04 is an Bassani O/R X-pipe and JLT cold air system. I don't want to do anything else to it until I've owned it for awhile so I don't void my warranty. I'm hoping for 400rwhp with the x-pipe, catback, and cold air intake. We'll see. Just talking about it makes me want to go and drive it.

I just got new tires for mine, Toyo proxies T1S 285/35/18 for the rear. Still have the 10k mile tires up front. It is hard not to take off the winter tires and put the summer wheels back on the car just to see if things are different. I only had the privilage of driving with new tires on the car for one day only since I swaped the wheels from the 01 which had the BBS RK Plasmas on it. The scream of that supercharger is calling me to drive it. If I could only get that sound out of my head and wait until spring.

:hail: What is nice about having a beater for the winter is you get used to it, then you get back in the Cobra and it feels like you have driven it for the first time.

I did not get any coal this year, but instead I got money to buy some fuel for a good long ride :D . I am hoping for no snow this year, too bad it has been doing just that......

Ausie,

I know what you mean about wanting to go out and drive :D I'm trying not to put to many miles on the '04. My wife has a '93 Accord that is paid for, runs good, and only has 118K miles on it, so we are trying to drive that as much as possible. I too have the Toyo T1's, I love 'em. They are the best tire I have had. They seem grip the road really well. I haven't had them on that long so I can't really tell how they are wearing. I also had them siped just for more wet weather grip, and longer life. I'll see if it's worth it. I eventually want to go with the AFS '03 cobra wheels with 18x9 fronts, and 18x10.5 rears. When I do I'm going to buy Nitto's for the rear and the T1's for the front.

Thanks everybody for the congrats

are you guys talking about a clunk or a whine? mine has a clunk. planned on buying a new 04 but things came up and then I ended up finding a nice used 03 and everytime I put it in gear it makes a clunk noise. very anyoing and worries me a little.

I was told that the sounding of the gears is a "mustang" thing...I made a comment to my salesman about it and he just smiled and made that comment...he was like "you've never driven a mustang huh?"...it bothers me some, but once you get a catback on there, you'll never hear it...

BadMoFo, you pick that white '03 up?

Yeah, the drive train clunk is normal. Ford showed me a memo explaining so. You'll probably notice that when you shift above 3000rpms it's a lot smoother.

ps: You certainly won't notice it above 5000rpms:blast:

Not to worry, you can even get a nasty clunk in the rear when turning a sharp corner at a relatively slow speed. Differential binding sounds bad but is normal, had it on both 01 and 04. I never heard a clunk when putting it into gear though, but then again I am used to it so I probably would not notice much. I also get a pop or clunk when traversing on uneven grade (slowly climbing over a steep entrance to a parking lot at an angle so I do not drag the pipes on the street). Sooner or later I am going to have to feed the snake some cheese since it does alot of whinning.

I don't think I can afford enough cheese, as much as my car whines :rotf:
