I am re-enlisting in the military and have the money to buy a new car. I am debating on the foillowing:

2004 Cobra SVT (+ Mods)
2005 GT (+ Mods)

Or do I wait and get a
2006 Cobra (Stock)

Also for those who have a BLACK COBRA, do you regret buying that color?

Thanks guys.

Go for the 2004 SVT with mods! Then after that join the club and come out and play with the rest of the Cobras:D :D

If you have to ask, then you have never driven a Terminator!:D Go with the Cobra and as far as black goes, I have had all black cars except for my 04. Black is a great color when it is clean but it is HARD to keep clean and shows swirls really bad. Not so bad if it is a garage queen but as a daily driver, I would advise a/g it.

Three words...Special Vehicals Team

I have to say that the ford black is the best looking black in the industry...when it's clean of course.
Good luck in the service. Keep your head down:thumbsup:

On a serious note...get the Cobra, and if you can find black, I was told mine was one of the last few in the US back in late November

Hey Crunchit,

You may have gotten your member packet by now but if not, your SCMC number is 01273. Welcome to the club officially!

And to keep the integrity of this thread.... get the 04 Cobra Andrenaline SVT if you have the money for it. it will be money well spent. The new GT's are running in the low 14's high 13's. Cobras are in the 12's right from the factory!

Yes the new 2005 GT is very nice, very nice.
but theres something about not having the pinniacle of machines, one has a classic history to its name,,,,,,the other is a used car.

I bought my 2004 Cobra in October. The 05's were just hitting the lot. I parked the two side by side and test drove both. The choice was obvious to me. I went with the Cobra. The SVT Cobra is the best Mustang Ford has ever produced; Factory blower, 4Valves per cylinder, cast iron block, six speed tran,....ect. After investing around $2k you can produce upwards of 475- 500RWHP.

The Cobra is a monster, the 05 GT is more trendy! Don't get me wrong, I'm not disrespecting the new 05. It's a fantastic car. The Cobra fit my personality better. I'm planning on keeping my Cobra and I think in 20 years it will be worth much more that the 05 GT. If you like the 05 style just wait until SVT releases its Cobra in 2006/2007.

My suggestion is to drive both. After driving the Cobra the choice will be a no brainer!! Good luck! Let us know what you choose.

It depends are you going for performance period or performance plus status car. If performance/status go for the Cobra either '03 or newer. What the NEW Cobra will be performace wise is still unknown as is the PRICE TAG.

For performance period for thebest price and I know I will get flamed for this one but I would be tempted to go with the '05 GT. The new chassis Ford put under the Mustang is a big improvement: true coilover MacPherson front suspension, panhard bar - three link rear suspension, better weight ratio front to back (old 57-43, new 53-47) and that three valve 4.6 is no slouch at 300HP which is just 5HP shy of what the Cobra had in the mid 90s. Ford and several others have already announced bolt-on supercharger kits that give this motor 500 HP. With the solid rear axle and good tires you will give the Terminators fits at the dragstrip. If you like AX or open track then you will be able to out drive them in the twisties with the better handling chassis.

Now all that said I love my '97 Cobra and it really gets attention. I have had people walk past my wife's Corvette Z06 to the Cobra and go "Nice Car" not having even noticed the Z06. The Cobra just has a presence that is special.

Good Luck on your decision.

On a seperate note you get a big salute from me. All members of the military deserve a big Thanks in my book for what you do for the rest of us!!

I am a big fan of driving all new cars. The new stang has a great chassi and more room. I love my 03 cobra and I am sure that I will get the next gen cobra when it arrives. You can always get the 05 pumped up but it will cost you some serious money to get it up to an 04 cobras level. If I were you and was a patient man I woulkd continue to save my money and wait for the 06/07 cobra If you have a need for speed now there are some great deals on the "old" fox chassi cobras for 30 grand you could have my numbers with a coupe and they ride pretty damn nice. I was gioing to get a used 911 cabrio before I bought my cobra It is an incredible bargain. You get a lot of special hardware in the package.

AdrenalineSVT~ Short and sweet: go with the Cobra ('03/'04). Not going to bore you with stats and the like other than to say that the Cobra will do everything you want out of a muscle car AND save your bank account to boot! :D

As an owner of an '03 cobra...... I can definately say they are awesome cars. But, on the other hand, I will be trading in my '03 on the next cobra reguardless of how it looks, how fast it is, or how much it is.......

What branch? Where you stationed. I'm in the marines, stationed in Cherry Point, NC... I re-enlisted in January '04, and my bonus went towards a built trans and rear in the 97 cobra, and a huge downpayment on an '03 cobra. You won't be disapointed with the terminators.

I'd say you should wait for that new Cobra, but that could be upwards of two years from now. I have a 2003 Cobra, and it is freaking great. So many mods available, this thing drives very well. My only concern for a new 2005 is it's too new not to have recalls and the like. The SN95-based Cobra has been sorted out over the years and is just an awesome car. Granted, an 05 will have better build quality than an 04, but it ain't gonna fall apart on you.

So, enjoy an new Cobra for now. Don't do too many mods, and save for the next generation Cobra (which will be the finest Mustang ever built!!!) a few years later.

Considering there are far less 04 SVTs on the lot unless you want a traded in one I guess would be okay, I would personally wait for the new SVT Cobra which will either have a Kenn Bell or Whipple Charger on it since they went with the screw type on the Ford GT(-40) as compared to the Roots type Eaton. I am not trying to start any rumors, but if they plan on improving HP and torque from the 04 that is what they will have to do. I guess time will tell if and when they release the specs on it. I personally like the cable driven throttle body on the later models 04 and before vrs the electronic version they use on the 05 Mustang. That could be a disaster if it becomes unresponsive or gets stuck open which is one of the issues with the some Audi's from mid 1990's (not sure if that was related to an electronic throttle body or not but there was a massive recall on it in relation to stuck open throttle or the throttle opening up all the way without driver input ). I wonder if the new Cobra will have the 4v heads or the 3v heads.

My biggest fear for the new Cobra, is that it will be an even bigger pig than the Terminator. I have heard rumors of 4000lbs. Mine weighs 3650 or so. It will need 500 rwhp to keep up with a modded terminator, which it may have, but keep in mind, it will not have more hp than the Ford GT.

Also, one more thing to think about:

Motor Trend is announcing that Carroll Shelby is releasing a 2007 Mustang version.
I am guessing $47-$55 thousand?! Supposedly 550hp, SC 5.4L:thumbsup:

i have a better question 2001 320hp Cobra or 05 GT 300hp?

On a performances stand point, it would boil down to weight and torque numbers, gear ratio's and the final drive gear. Then the ergonomics come in to play. I found the 01 and 04 interior more comfortable than that of the new 05. Sitting in one at the dealership was as close to driving it as I could get (besides that the only one available to sit in was the V6 version). In the more modern interior of the 93 to 04 mustangs, the instrument cluster can be read in a split second as compared to the awkward dash of the 05. The speedo and tach are impossible to view without leaning to one side or the other. Since I have not test driven an 05, I cannot compare it to the 01 or 03/04 Cobras. Sitting in one does make you realize that it is much bigger than its predecessors. Unfortunately, most of the Ford dealers in my area will not let buyers test drive the new mustang , most in part since they do not have any demo's as well as most if not all of the new 05's are on back order.

GO WITH THE TERMINATOR!!!! I HAVE A BLACK ONE, AND IT IS A PAIN TO KEEP CLEAN BUT IT LOOKS GOOD WHEN IT IS. IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER I WOULD PROBALLY GO WITH ANOTHER COLOR, BUT I STILL LOVE MY RIDE AND WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN ANOTHER TERMINATOR! I LIKE THE NEW GTs BUT ITS HARD TO WANT A RIDE THAT HAS A COUPLE HUNDRED LESS HORSEPOWER!!

Plan on around $40K for an '07. A lot less for a '03-'04. GT *cough* *cough* like GT40, GT? Yeah. Mustang GT? Wait for the snake.

Also for those who have a BLACK COBRA, do you regret buying that color?

Thanks guys.
Yeah. I had a pristine '98. Black is the best color for the first 15 minutes after you clean it. I mean, if you're not anal like I am I suppose you'll enjoy black. I now own redfire.
