"Big power isn't much good unless it gets to the ground without excessive wheelspin, which is why the production GT500 will have a lot more rear tire than the New York show car, which hunkered over a set of 19-inch wheels wearing 255/45 tires. The initial production run of GT500s will roll on 9.5-by-18-inch wheels with sticky Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires—255/45 front, 285/40 rear.

Ouch.. work for a tire store as a mechanic.. these tires cost so much you dont want to spin them LOL :) I looked into buying them when i was tire shopping.. as a example a 275/40/17 Eagle super car was int he mid $400 range... each.. with a horrable tread wear rating..even the vette guys complain about how fast there wear away.... LOL hmmmm all this makes me think these cars are not gonna be cheap at all :(

Thanks for posting the link!!!
Although Car and Driver can be a bunch of tools, its nice to that they did a decent job on making your mouth water. (even though they manage to alway knock their mustang articles down a notch by faulty information, see quote 1)
A couple things that poped up for me when reading that article....
The 2001 SVT Mustang Cobra R comes to mind. In contrast, the GT500 should deliver enough compliance to make everyday driving a pleasure rather than a punishment,
huh....2001???
The GT V-8 is all aluminum with a dry-sump lubrication system, whereas the GT500 has an iron block and a wet sump.
hmmm.... I wonder if we will be able to buy a dry-sump upgrade or bolt on for the GT500 :doubt:
"We just couldn't get the 255s to hook up," says O'Connell. "Almost every run was going up in smoke."
well, you think part of that could be because of the 18" wheels??? I mean, the less sidewall you got... hello. But, the handling will improve I guess at the cost of more expensive tires $$$. Oh, and with the 03/04 having 275 out back, why would you expect 255's on a 100+ more horesepower car. Kudos to them about 255 in the front though, makes it more driveable even though it might contribute to understear. No more hassle of tire rotation though :D oh wait :doubt:
plus a bigger front-brake package, bigger wheels and tires, and other GT500 package elements, add up to a curb weight projected in the 3850-pound range
Someone needs to clue SVT on the fact that lowering the weight helps acceleration, braking, and handling as mush as upping power and beefier brakes/suspension.... OH wait, they developed the FORD GT :doh2:, ok what gives :(
We expect that when we put the spurs to a test car early next year, a 0-to-60 number will come up in four seconds flat, and the quarter-mile will be 12.5 seconds at 116 mph.
C&D really needs to find better track test drivers... 4 sec. flat 0-60, but a a 12.5 1/4??? at 116??? C'mon now, that things at least good for low 12's. (emm oh yeah its got a Solid rear as well hello...can you say "Hooks better than 99-04 Cobra"... I mean, they mentioned it negatively like 3 times, you think they would remember the SRA)
Accordingly, we expect to see at least 0.94 g.
so much for the high .9x's :( I hope it actually performs better than the prediction given all the improvements (oh yeah, can't forget that weight working against it  )
Unlike the early Mustangs, the GT500 is getting a lot of wind-tunnel time as part of its development, and O'Connell is intent on hitting the right balance between downforce and aerodynamic drag.
All I can say is FINALLY!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!.. no more calling the Cobra a windbrick in the sports car world :D
"Besides, we figure the driver can correct for understeer with his right foot any time he wants."
:bounce: It wouldn't be a Mustang otherwise :D I LOVE steering with my right foot, its makes Open Tracking SOO MUCH funner. Props to C&D for saying Amen to that. , I have to agree.
from $36,000 to $40,000.
thats still alot of clams :(
Sound system: Shaker 500 AM-FM radio/CD changer, 8 speakers
:doubt:
BRAKES
Type: hydraulic with vacuum power assist and anti-lock control
not running off the power steering anymore? :doubt:
Top speed (governor limited): 160 mph
wonder what it will do in the Texas Mile :D
