Avon Tech R's on clearance at Tire Rack...

The Avon Tech R competition tires are on sale for $139.00 for 275/40's. It's a steal considering they were $203. I called them and asked why they were getting rid of them and was told that the Tech R is being replaced by the Tech R"A", which is a little different rubber formulation. The grip is supposed to be better than the v700 kumho's and a little less than Hoosiers, but they last a long time.

Just thought you'd like to know. I'm buying 12 for myself.

Sure thing Larry! I actually ordered 8 of them last night...I'm trying to convince her to let me order 4 more, but I guess those 8 will get me started. I'm eager to see how they are compared to my usual Toya RA1's. I hear good things about them. I just couldn't pass them up at that price.

Hope all is well with you and your family!

Craig

If you are referring to the Hoosier grand am cup tires, then the Avons are better, especially in how many heat cycles you can get from them. My GAC Hoosiers were cycled out after 3 sessions (got extremely hard and slick), and the sidewalls separated from the tread after a total of 3 track days. I have since been running Toya RA1's, which are AS sticky as the Hoosiers (GAC)when new, and I get about 6-8 hard track days on them a set, and the good thing is, they get stickier (not more slick like Hoosiers) as they get older.

The Avons are supposed to be more sticky than a Toyo and a little less that SO4's. And they have about the same wear as the Toyo. They also are known to have very stiff sidewalls. It's had great reviews so far. I grabbed 2 sets of them to give them a try. Anything is better than those GAC Hoosiers.

Grab em while you can!

Craig

Hey Jeff!

I've heard there might be slight rubbing on SN 95's when using 17X9's. I read that on Corner carvers. You can search for "AVON" to find the thread.

Update: Found the thread Jeff... http://corner-carvers.com/forums/sho...highlight=Avon

Thanks Craig...I'm going to try them and see if I like them better then the GAC Hoosiers which is what I have but I will say that the Hoosiers lasted me more then three events. I'll be buying 4 tomorrow but I am tempted to buy 8 like you since I already planned to spend a grand on tires anyway.

You know how tough I can be on the track and the Hoosiers lasted me all season except I did cord one at Talladega but that was my fault for not rotating the tires. I learned a valuable lesson that day.

They lasted through the following 2005 events:

2 high speed autocrosses
CMP
Gingerman
Talladega
I still have some rubber left on the other three tires.

It looks like those guys on CC are talking more about AX then open tracking...

Good to hear that yours lasted. Mine weren't corded (still had plenty of tread), but the sidewalls split away from the tread, which is dangerous. If you read about the Hoosiers you'll find that they are "1 hit wonders". They heat cycle after one or 2 sessions, which is why they perform so well in "races". That's fine for racing, but I lost 50% of my grip after 1 day (SCMC event last year). I threw them away and I've been running Toyo's the last 8 or so weekends. They've been consistent, and got better as they got older, which is opposite of Hoosier. They are much more forgiving also. They'll "shout" at you if they are going to let loose.
Bob Sheilds swears by the Avons, as does Ronn Hale (of course they are lightweight BMW's). But, I'm sure you'll dig em on our 3500lb pigs. Outstanding tire for the price. Mine will be delivered tomorrow, but too bad the car is still at Lesters so I can't test them out. I'm hoping he'll be done soon.

CC's is a little of both. The majority of the guys over there are road course junkies. The talk about the Avon tires was more related to AX, but 90% of the general tech is about road course. Of course, it all applies to the same thing........."corner carving".

Jeff,

Just go through the link on the home page.

Thanks Tom for doing that...

I talked to Garry today and he has the 04 up and running again. He called me to see if he can go through the link on the site and I told him he could. He's getting 4 tires today and I'm getting 8, 4 of them are for Burke. I'm also getting new rotors from TR, too. I got my rollbar today and I'm going to see if John can group all of the SCMC members together as one group? Rick did this at Talladega and it was a blast!

I've just got my schedule for 2006 somewhat finalized and it looks like it's going to be another whirlwind of a ride this year. Can't wait for March and am looking sooo forward to the 2006 SVT Cobra Nationals! BTW, I've been talking smack all week with John and Burke just to sort of get them primed!

Craig,

I will send this message out to all of the club members so they will be aware of it, too.

Got the tires delivered on Friday. I must say...I'm impressed with them. Sidewalls are very stiff. I went ahead and got mine heat cycled at the rack, so they should be ready to roll when I hit the track.

Hopefully they won't sell out soon so others can get in on it.

Craig
