So I call my local SVT Dealership...
in Houston. It's called Champion Ford in Katy. I talk to the receptionist who has some general information and here is what she tells me:
1. They already have a waiting list 2x larger than their expected shipment, but she doesn't know how large their shipment is going to be. 2. The MSRP is projected at $45-$50. 3. Their markup is going to be $15-$20. 4. It is exclusive to SVT Dealerships Now, I honestly hope that all this hype dies down. If anyone is going to pay $70,000 for a new Mustang, even if it is a Shelby, they should get robbed for it. Just my 2 cents. Why not pick up a Viper, Corvette, or even a Porsche for that price. |

I don't think I would put to much stock in what that person said. I don't think the MSRP will be higher the $40K for the coupe and $45K for the Vert. Second the car is NOT exclusive to SVT Dealerships, the SVT Dealerships are currently contemplating a Class Action Law Suite against Ford because the car won't be exclusive. Right now the production number for this year is 7500 Ford will make more IF they can get the superchargers. This will be a repeat of the '03 Cobra's with people paying premiums on the cars. I don't agree with it but if people will pay then who's to argue with the dealer?

One more important piece of information that I believe some of you will find interesting. I call once again and ask to speak to someone in new car sales and get an associate who gives me some rather weird news. He informs me that they should be receiving their first GT500 sometime in June I believe. Apparently it is supposed to be special because it will be one of the first one hundred produced off the line. As to whether or not it comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (much less whether being one of the first one hundred produced makes it special at all), I do not believe really matters. Well, he goes on to state that they will hold a silent auction on the vehicle and the highest bid will obviously win the chance to purchase it. I honestly believe that the price on this one will not be a fairly good indicator of how much to except the others to sell for. The price will only be determined by that one person who wants to be one of the first to own one and how much they'er willing to pay to get it a few weeks before everyone else.

Fast Forward 12 months ...
"Ford announced $20,000 rebates on the Shelby GT500 today to combat the fact that nobody really wants a 4,000 lb. underpowered over priced Mustang. Porsche countered with lowering the price of the 911 to match the Shelby." It is estimated that 7,400 of the 7,500 Shelby's produced are still on the dealers lot and the dealers are paying Ford while they sit.

I spoke with my dealer in Raleigh and they expect the "market adjustment" to be $25k. They have no sympathy for brand-loyal, dealer-loyal customers who have bought several cars at their dealership. Beginning to look like they have priced me out of a purchase opportunity.
I'm number 2 in line, have paid my $5,000 to get in that line more than a year ago. My order has been placed and is in Ford's order system. Production schedule is unknown......the "lady in Atlanta" does the scheduling and she hasn't called them yet. Add to this my job loss a year ago, a pending separation agreement, and this poor guy is looking for a generous benefactor who can give me $100,000 for a new Shelby GT500. It's tungsten color coupe with satin stripe, deluxe interior upgrade.

$25k ?!?!?!?!?!? Ouch! That's a steep market adjustment for a mustang. They did the same thing though when they first brought back the T-Bird.
You could probably modify an 03/04 on that budget and end up with at least similar power and performance of a modded GT 500 and still have money left over and less vehicle weight. On a cost vs performance basis, that car is no bargain. But I bet people will still line up and buy them at that price... |

Dave,
You do what you want but if you could do it, take back the deposit. Let them sell the car to someone else that is willing to pay that type of premium and go buy you an 03/04 Cobra with low miles. That's why I wasn't going to be the first one to jump in on that deal. It's not even a real Shelby! Like SVT Ky said, in a year, they'll be begging people to buy them or they'll come down to a reasonable level. Paying $70K for a Mustang is crazy and you also have these other scenarios to consider: Scenario One - For sale by owner "I bought the Shelby but I can't afford the payments" Scenario Two - For sale by owner "I bought the Shelby but I can't afford the gas or the insurance" Scenario Three - For sale by owner "I bought the Shelby but wife says the car has to go because we're buying a house or having a baby." Scenario Four - For sale by owner "I bought the Shelby but I have too many toys" Let someone else eat the market demand mark up, then you can go and get a low mileage for a much better price. I remember when the 2000 R's were market priced and now they have come down below sticker for a low mileage one. Don't throw away the money when you will be just as happy with an 03/04 Cobra.

there's no doubt that there will be all of those scenarios above played out. So, like Tony said, you could wait it out.

"Even if it is a Shelby"????
This car is no "Shelby". It was designed and built 100% by Ford in Michigan. It is a Shelby in name only!!!! And......grossly over-priced and over-weight at that! A "Shelby"? Yeh, and there is a Santa Claus, too.
