im fixin to purchase a mgw shifter and while im at it i would like to change out my tranny oil with some royal purpal but i dont know what weight or viscosity to get or how much. and is it even possible to fill it from inside the car because i heard you need a pump to fill it up. i know i can drain it from the bottom but its sorta imposible to fill it from under the car . know what i mean. please guide me in the right direction. thanks for any help

The drain and fill plugs are plainly identified on the transmission. You will need a pump to fill the transmission. I use Royal Purple Max ATF. My car is primarily used for open-track events and the synthetic ATF results in lower operating temperatures of the transmission. When replacing the plugs use a thread sealer for a leak free job.

I have never filled a transmission that way, but it should work OK. My T-45 transmission has a capacity of 6.6 pints. Check the owners manual for the capacity of the Tremec 3650 used in 2001 Cobras.

John (WVS&SND) reminded me that Ford and transmission shops do not recommend synthetic ATF for these transmissions. I was looking for a way to reduce heat produced by the transmission & foaming of the fluid that was occuring during road racing. The synthetic ATF worked for me. The guy that replaced tranny bearings for me said I should not use synthetic. When I asked him what the tranny looked like when he opened it up he said it looked like a new tranny.

Filling from the shifter opening may take awhile.

I wouldn't risk spilling in the car that ATF bright red or royal purple (what ever

color that may be?) could really stain.

Use a good drop cloth!

If you go to an autoparts store like Autozone, Schucks, Napa, Knechts, etc. you should be able to find a pump that will attach itself to bottles of fluid. I bought one for me, and it was less than $10. Works great too.

The Service Manual says to use only MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid(ATF) in the Borg-Warner T-45 manual 5-speed transmission. I suspect it is the same for the Tremec 3650 in your 2001 Cobra, but check your owners manual.

2001 Cobras were the only ones to use the Tremec 3650 5-speed manual. 1993 thru 1995 Cobras had variants of the T-5. 1996 thru 1999 Cobras came with the T-45. 2000 Cobra R's used the T-56 6-speed, as do 2003-2004 Cobras and the 2007-2008 Shelby GT500's. The 1995 Cobra R's were equipped with Tremec 3550 5-speed.

i just wasnt sure how many diff kinds of trans fluid there are. do u know what weight it recomends.cuz i run 10w30 in my motor and it says 5w20.thats just to thin for my taste. i just want most protection i can get without getting rediclous with the weight and viscosity
