Question about Hood Nostril Thingys

Anyone ever make those things functional? I know some of the Terminator guys have, but they're located slightly differently and I was concerned about water entering the engine compartment right over the valve covers...

So if you have made them functional, what did you do?

Thanks!

Ford racing sells vents for those that will allow air flow through. The grills are open into the inside of hood. I will see if I can find them for you in a bit.

They are completely non-functional and can't be made functional. There have been many many people who have tested opening the hood (and hood blanket) to allow air flown into the engine bay through these "nostrils"......it doesn't work. Primarily the overall hood design is to flow air OVER the hood, the two decorations (hood nostrils) do not offer an impedance to the air flow so opening them does not allow air to flow in. If I remember correctly the general consensus was that it can allow water in during heavy rain but you won't get any air in that would create any difference.

Actually, I am expecting the openings to vent hot air out of the engine bay, anyway. What I am thinking of doing is finding another set of the vents, drilling them out in 2 ways...first with a bunch of holes, then second, remove larger pieces.

In the meantime, I would add a temperature gauge under the hood and get measurements under the hood, ambient temperature, and coolant temperature. Then do the same with the drilled and removed test pieces.

We'll see then...

My real concern, however, is the effect of water entering into the engine bay from these new holes. Is there anything on the engine the water can damage from above?
