IRS help

Hey, I bought an 03/04 Cobra IRS a while back and thought I got a good deal on it, but as it turns out, it may not have been such a deal. Im not too experienced with all this so some of my terminology may be off.....

I was told when I bought the IRS that the rubber seal on the differential had melted (due to 3" exhaust) and that the bearings went out and needed to be replaced. Well I guess they went really bad. The bearings that went bad were the ones at the end where the pinion goes in. Some how it got messed up enough that (I think) the pinion tried to come out and spun around where the bearing/race was and tore that area up pretty good. Im wondering if this can be fixed and how, or if I can buy a replacement housing anywhere. I dont know if I can have it welded to put some metal in there and then remachined or what? Anyways, heres the damage....

Any help would be great! Thanks, Ryan

That cannot be fixed IMHO. What you need is a complete center section. You'd need to find someone selling a complete IRS and then swap out the parts you need. They go in the range of $1,000.00 (plus or minus) on ebay and the message boards for sale sections.

I have a complete center section out of a VERY low mileage '03 Cobra (3:55 gears, 31 spline) but I would need to get about $500.00 for it plus freight.

Good luck!

dang....Im really looking to get just a housing. I have a good center section and new gears and bearings to go in it. $500 just isnt worth it to me now, hell I dont even have that much in my whole IRS! lol

Any ideas where I might pick up a housing? It says here ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-...QQcmdZViewItem ) that it is "Original equipment on 1989-1997 T-Bird,1993-1998 MK-VIII, 1999-2004 Mustang Cobra with 8.8" so Im guessing I could use a stock center section from any of those cars?

Well, to be perfectly honest with you, buy the time you buy a new housing from Ford, (why take a chance on a used housing buying from some unknown source like ebay), buying new bearings and seals, paying the labor to set up the gears you're most likely looking at about $500.00 for that.

FWIW
