Rear end fluid for my 96???

Hey all,

I did a search on the board and pretty much came up with Royal Purple 75W140 as the fluid of choice to put into the rear end of the Cobras. In the next couple of weeks, I'm actually having a set of 4.10 gears put in (evil smile ).

However, I'm providing the gears, master install kit and the fluid to the shop guys that are going to do it for me. Question is...how much rear end fluid do I need?

I looked at the little "owners manual supplement" that came with the car and it shows 6.6 pints for the rear end. That comes out to 3.3 quarts. Does that sound right? That means I'll have to buy four bottles of RP rear end fluid at $16/bottle. OUCH!

I just wanted to make sure that is really the amount I need because if I'm way over (say it only needs two bottles), I'm sure these guys will probably keep the other bottles instead of me being able to take them back to the store.

I tried googling the specs online, just to be sure, but couldn't find anything about the rear end fluid amount.

Any help would be appreciated. I want to trust the little owners manual supplement, but I don't know. LOL

I believe so, i work over at Advace Auto Parts and las time i checked, it said that same amount in Pints. And i would have to say that Royal Purple is a good choice. Thats what i would go with. If i had to choose another, it would be the Lucas Synthetic Gear Oil. Ok, i just researched on Autozone.com and it said this.....http://www.autozone.com/N,21200241/s...pecsSelect.htm
If you cant see the link, it says 1 and 2/3 quarts for the 7.5" ring gear. That was for a 96 and for a 97 it has another choice with the 8.8" ring gear and should take 1 8/9 quarts.

I just redid my rear end, as it was leaking. I had to replace the rear cover, with one that had a fill hole. It took me a little over two and a half quarts of Lucas Oil 80w-90. The aftermarket cover holds more oil, so I would give them three qts to be safe. The advantage to the Royal Purple is that it does not need a friction modifier added, it is already in the oil. So, if you don't want to spend the $$ for the RP, just make sure you get a friction modifier, too.

I have read that you fill until the oil starts trickling out of the fill hole.

Ya, I was looking up in the manual and it said 6.6 pints. I converted that to quarts and it was 3.3 quarts. So, I actually went out and bought 4. However, if I don't have to spend the extra money (it's friggin $17/quart here!), then I'll take that fourth one back. I'm afraid of giving them all of them and then having them keep one. LOL Ya, ended up being like $73 to buy 4 quarts...I just about died! And plus NO ONE seemed to have the 75W140 type oil. I finally found a place (4 Wheel Parts) that had it in stock.

Monday the guys are going to be putting the ring & pinion and master install kit in. I figured I might as well have them replace all the bearings and the entire shabang while they are in there. No sense in not replacing the bearings and find out the thing burns up after a couple of months.

Thanks for the tip about the fric mod included in the RP oil. I checked that out online the other night and found that out too...I would have bought both if I didn't read it in a post on here before. LOL!

Well, Monday morning I'm droppin' my baby off to get the rear end done (and I even bought the white 23 tooth speedo gear! Amazing, isn't it? ) Maybe I'll just put the 4th bottle in the trunk and if they call me telling me I don't have enough, I'll tell them where it is. LOL!

I just can't wait.

Now the fun is finding a place that won't rape me to put in the Kenny Brown subframe connectors. :-( Every place has said about 2-3 hours to weld them in at $75/hour plus materials. I don't see why it should take that long after I line everything up and bolt them in. I'm wondering if they are all full of crap or don't know what they are doing/talking about.

I got the darn connectors for $55/pair ($80 with shipping) and it's going to cost me friggin' $225-$250 just to weld them in?! WTF?

It shouldn't cost anymore than $100 to install. I got mine parts and labor for $200

Believe me...I agree with you, but that doesn't seem the way it works around here. The good thing is, one of the guys at work is into Mustangs and welds very nicely. When i asked him on who he would suggest to get it done, he stated he could do it, but I didn't ask him for a price yet. I wanted to get some prices first. So, tomorrow I'll see what he says. Hopefully it'll only be about $100...then I'll be good to go, but we'll see.

Sounds like they want to be able to hit the casinos once they finish your welding. Hopefully the guy will give you a better price than what you've been getting.

Well, all I know is I'm still having a little trouble with the rear end.

Yesterday they went to put the 4.10s in and the called me to tell me the head of the retaining pin was broken off and they would have to drill the pin out. Oh joy. Another hour of labor, plus I had to buy a new pin.

So, they were supposed to finish it up today by the time I got off work. I go to pick it up, it's still on the lift. I sit there for a hour and 20 minutes (40 min past their closing time) and he finally pulls the car up.

Then he comes in and tells me that I need to bring the car back tomorrow morning. He said he has to put another shim in it. WTF?! He let me know that it wasn't completely set and that I have to bring it back tomorrow so he can open it back up and put an additional shim in because it's making a bit of noise. Great...I can't win.

So, I'm driving the car home very gingerly just to make sure that it doesn't grenade the rear end. I then realize, they also didn't put the speedo gear in. WTF again?!

So, tomorrow morning I'm dropping the car off around 8, telling them that I'll be back by 1 pm to pick it up and I'll be on lunch, so I can't wait around for the car and I'm going to ask them about putting the speedo gear in.

If they don't do it, I'm going to ask for the part back and I'll just put the speedo gear in myself. I just figured they could do it because they already had it on the lift and it should only take a couple of minutes more to do it.

So, they have had the car for almost 2 days and charged me for 4 hours of work...all I know is they best have this damn thing done tomorrow. The ONE mod I do on the car and I can't even have fun with it yet...UGGGHHH!!!!

Well....

I guess patience pays off. They actually redid the rear end today and also put in the speedo gear. It sounds and works just fine. MAJOR difference. Admittedly I use 5th gear as 4th gear now, but it's WAYYYY worth it. Seems like the car is always in and/or really close to the powerband now. It's not like you have to "wait" for it to get there and start screaming. She's already there!

It was a lot of money to get it done, but well worth it. Now I just need to start saving again to get those subframes put in and then work on other mods.
