suggestions for helmet

I starting looking into a helmet purchase and saw some interesting stuff at saferacer.com. I was however surprised by the variety of helmets and the range in cost. I don't want to 'cut corners' on safety equipment but, as always, money is a factor- my wife is already concerned about the money spent on roll bar and tires (and she doesn't know about the need for two sets of harnesses!).
So, any recommendations for helmets? I'd like to try some on- anyone in the triangle area have a store/shop they would recommend?

I have this one: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...59&prmenbr=361 and am very happy with it.

I went to the Simpson store at Lowes Motor Speedway to try the helmets on. I would definitely recommend trying one on before buying to make sure it feels right. Different helmets with the same size will feel different.

Go to our vendor section and you will see OMP Racing there. They give us a discount and you may want to check their prices first.

www.ompusa.com

Tell them you are with the SCMC for the discount!

I got my harnesses at the Simpson store at Lowe's Motor Speedway, where Tom mentioned. I got a helmet at a motorcycle shop in Rockingham, but most such stores carry them.

Make sure it's a -SA- rated helmet.

I also have the Predator and also bought from Helmet City. Best price I found on that helmet. I tried some on at local motorcycle shops to know what size I needed and then mail ordered. If the local shops could have gotten within 10% or so I would have bought there, but they were generally 30-40% higher

I have a Simpson LX Plus (larger eye/goggle port than the Bieffe...). Frequest visitor to these forums, Darius Rudis is a Simpson helmet distributor (not to mention a heck of a driver and all-around good guy...) Drop him an email at DRudis@DariusRudis.com and I'm sure he'll get you a price quote...

However, if you're looking for the best price on an SA00 helmet, http://www.racerwholesale.com has their G-Force open face helmets startring at $149.00...

WHATEVER you do, PLEASE DO NOT SCRIMP on a helmet... your safety (and your brain's) is NOT the place to "save a few $$$"...

See you on track!

I own a Snell 90 Bieffe helmet that I wore when I raced go karts. It is very comfortable, and was a lot less than a Simpson.

I also have the Bieffe Predator. The biggest advantage I found vs. the other helmets I looked at was the the interior of the helmet is removeable. You can throw it in the washer after a long hot day at the track. I also found that different brands fit differently. You are going to wear the helmet for a long period of time under a somewhat stressful environment. You want to be sure it fits well. I would not order any helmet online without trying it on first.
