Ford's experience with the 4.6 dohc engine has been that it is actually cheaper for them to replace the engine should it have a serious failure than to try and fix it. My father-in-law first told me about this when the Lincoln dealership he works for had 2 or 3 Mark VIIIs come in with engine problems. Each time Ford told them to sit tight and not attempt any repairs and shipped them new engines.

The transmission is not as hard or labor intensive to work on and would depend on the severity of the damage.

Not planning on putting them to the test are you?

i see wut your saying but the 04 cobra's engine.but isnt it alot more expensive then other 4.6's because of the supercharger and other things that are in it because of the supercharger like stronger internals that cost more.

The main price difference between the two is from Ford using an iron block on the 03-04 Cobra vs the all aluminum block on the other dohc engines which would make the Cobra engine less expensive. I do not know what if any internal changes were done to the engine which would bump the cost back up. The supercharger is really a separate piece so technically this cost would not be counted as part of the engine cost and would only be replaced if it was also damaged. The biggest cost on these engines, which is the same for both applications, is the DOHC setup. This cost, complexity and the extra space requirements of the DOHC engine is why Ford ditched this engine and went with the variable valve timing sohc in the '05 GT.

imk not completly shore but i thought because of the super charger there are stronger engine internals because of the boost.

The forged internals may cost more than the 99/01 counterparts, but point blank, the aluminum blocks cost more to manufacture due to the method it is made than the cast iron blocks they are using. The aluminum blocks used in the 99/01 cobras were manufactured by the same company who equipt Ferrari with their aluminum casting process (article in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords). The same may be true with the Cobra R block , the Ford GT and the crate motors with the Romeo plant emblem. As for the other run of the mill products pooped out by Ford, they use different contract companies to manufacture the parts. I sure hope the Iron horse will live up to its predicessor and then some. It sure has a heck of a lot of torque, not to mention the clidesdales as compared to the ponies produced by the earlier motors. From what I had read about the aluminum blocks, is that they are very strong (the internals were another story).

Yeah, I guess I could have picked up my brochure off the table and looked to see exactly what the internal differences are.

Check out this link. It is very informative and all Terminator owners should look into it. The motor is very expensive (12000 bucks with the supercharger, about 8000 dollars). The internals are all forged, including the pistons. Now the forged pistons are Ford forged as we like to call them because they are kinda weak for forged pistons. But yes, the internals are all expensive. But check out the link, its good info.
