Highway 11 Cruise

Dewayne Brooks has put together the details for a Cherokee Foothills Cruise down Highway 11. The date will be the Saturday after the Bristol FFW, Saturday August 13, 2005, so we can try to get as many members to attend as possible.

Details will come out this week but the idea is to do at least one event per month. July is the karting event, August is the cruise and Parkway Ford show.

The cruise will start at the Cowpens battlefield and go down highway 11 to Ceasar's Head state park, lunch at Aunt Sue's and then go through all of the towns on Hwy 11, like Walhalla, Pickens, etc... We'll end down there at Lake Hartwell at the GA state line. (Ice Cream stop) What I thought we could do is maybe see if we could stop at Amazon in Anderson on the way back if we have time??

What are your thoughts??

Sounds like a great cruise. Is the Cowpens Battlefield close to Gaffney where 11 and 85 meet?

More details about the cruise...

Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (Highway 11)
This trip is approximately 130 miles plus side trips.

Highway 11 intersects with I-85 in Gaffney at Exit 92.

We will meet at the Cowpens National Battlefield which is 10 miles west of Gaffney on Highway 11. There is a parking lot at the entrance to the park where we can meet.

The speed limit is 55 mph most of the trip. It sometimes drops to 30 or 45. Average speed for the trip should be about 40 mph meaning we will be on the road 4-5 hours. Highway 11 is mostly rural with farms and mountain scenery the norm. There are many roadside stands for purchasing fruit, vegetables, etc.

Approximate miles
from Cowpens. Possible side trips or places to stop.

48.8 1. Caesars Head State Park- via Rte. 276 – panorama of Blue Ridge foothills. About 12 -15 miles round trip.

51.2 2. Aunt Sue’s Corner- Sandwiches and ice cream. Good place for
lunch. Closed on Monday

53.1 3. Table Rock State Park- restrooms and scenery

68.3 4. Devils Fork State Park- If we want to have a cookout, this is a
possibility. On the shores of Lake Jocassee About 3-5 miles off Highway 11.

70.1 Possible side trip- Rte. 107 Scenic Byway- Turn right off Highway 11 onto Highway 130. Travel Highway 130 and take a left onto Highway 413 west, then take Rte. 107 south through the mountains of Sumter National Forest. You will see many kinds of trees, waterfalls, the Walhalla National Fish Hatchery, and the area around the Chatooga River. Rejoin Highway 11 in Walhalla, SC. The total miles for this side trip is about 35 mi.

Highway 11 ends at I-85 near the Georgia state line.

Additional information-
17.2 miles- cross I 26, Kangaroo- gas, drinks, etc
23.9 miles- Information Center
42.1 miles- Citgo in Cleveland

Highway 11 Cruise

Thanks to Tony for putting the information about the Highway 11 cruise on the board for me. I have been out of town for over a week.
I envision the trip to take almost all day. Tony mentioned an 8:30 start time but we could move that up if someone is coming from a long distance. The Highway 11 trip is about 130 miles. The sidetrip to Caesar's Head is about 12 miles and the sidetrip up Highway 107 is another 35 miles. Please let me know if you are interested in the Highway 107 sidetrip. This can be optional. We will stop for lunch at Aunt Sue's Corner.

I hope that several of you are interested. Please contact me at brooksds@mindspring.com if you have questions or suggestions.

Thanks,
DeWayne Brooks

About the SCMC "Foothills Scenic Highway Cruise" coming up next month on August 13, 2005. My parents in law live 20 minutes from Highway 11 and we decided to go check out the upcoming SCMC cruise area. Here are the observations I came to:

1) Highway 11 is an awesome road to travel with very little turns but wide open stretches of straight roads.
2) Table Rock looks awesome from the highway and a trip up to Ceasar's Head is definitely in order.
3) While originally, we plan to run down to I85 to conclude the cruise, I think hitting Highway 183 would be much better where we can make a stop at the Oconee Nuclear Energy Plant.
4) Aunt Sue's is a cool place to stop for souvenirs and ice cream.
5) Cowpens Battlefield will be the beginning of the cruise and we should drop in to see some SC history.
6) Cops definitely patrol the area a lot.

I believe a lot of you will enjoy this cruise!

Yes this is a "one day" cruise. You will need to bring the following items with you:

1) A full tank of gas
2) Your favorite CDs and your favorite person
3) If you have a droptop, you will need suntan lotion
4) Lunch money

That's pretty much it and to make sure your car is in good working order. I also think it would be cool to invite friends on this cruise, too.

Talking Living in the Upstate, I can vouch for Hwy11

It's definitely a nice cruise if you've never driven it. Driving up Caesars Head Mtn. is a treat also.

If people want to make a nite of it, look into staying in Anderson(right off I-85) about 30 mins from Seneca & Lake Keowee Duke power station. Maybe Rocky/James w/ Upstate Mustang club could plan a Cruise in that evening and everyone could meet Rick/Linn at Amazon as well. With the return trip for some folks it could split up an 6-8 hr. driving day into 2 days....

Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the idea Dave...a trip to Amazon would be nice but that will depend on the time factor. I don't think it will take as long as I thought originally to do the entire cruise; however, I believe we should do the 35 mile detour to the fish hatchery and water falls area in Walhalla. We went to Walhalla and it's a neat little town so it should fit right in with the cruise.

If others want to do an overnighter in Anderson SC, that's cool but I'd have to make it a one day trip as I'm sure I'd have a lot of club stuff waiting on me at the house.

So what part of the trip will you be doing??

So what part of the trip will you be doing?? [/QUOTE]
If I can't make it to the start at Gaffney, I may meet at the intersection of Hwy 357/ Hwy 11 right past Links of Tryon near Inman and finish the trip. It's right before the mountain run.

Wouldn't have to backtrack quiet as far.

cruise

Sounds like a plan. If anyone is interested in setting up a cruise in at an Anderson site or at Amazon, let me know. I'm sure Rick and Linn would love to have us!!! That is if Rick is in town. If it's a plan, I will ask Rick and Linn for their thoughts. We have several local cruise in spots from Anderson to Greenville, right off of HWY 85. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Rocky
