Same as the Phantom Menace, but it doesn't say on the box which one it is.

Two different releases. I guess go with the widescreen. I'm sure I will eventually have one anyway. Same price.

A little widescreen/fullscreen education for the uninitiated. I am a home theatre geek (even still have a laser disk player, and the 3 Star Wars re-releases on LD in Dolby Digital).

Widescreen = exactly what you saw in the movie theater. Will usually have black bars above and below (even on a widescreen TV), since the aspect ratio of the film is different than your screen. If you have a very small TV (under 27") this may make it difficult to watch.

Fullscreen comes in two flavors, Pan and Scan and Open Matte:

Pan and Scan = pure evil. Basically they make the image fit your screen by cutting off the left and the right of the movie. They then "Pan and Scan" the visible area around so you are seeing what the editor sees as the most action. I finally got this concept to gel with my wife when we started watching Star Wars on TBS one day. After the second commercial break, I just grabbed the LD and threw it in to the same spot - and she saw how much of the image was being thrown away.

Open Matte = ok, and sometimes humorous. In this case, the movie was actually shot on 4:3 film stock and then hard matted to fit the movie screen. The director usually doesn't pay attention to the very top and bottom of the image, since it will be thrown away in the end. To make the image fit your screen, they just remove the matte and show you the whole image (more picture than you could see in the movies). In some movies (Pee Wee's Big Adventure comes to mind), you end up being able to see boom mikes at the top of the screen, and studio equipment at the bottom during some scenes.

And yes - I have too many expensive hobbies.

Ok that sums it up...go with the widescreen Mike. I have a 36" of viewing pleasure, so i should be a viewing problem.

Just got home. Not only did I get Episode II, but also got the newly released Lord of The Rings extended cut of Fellowship of the Ring (with 30 more minutes added on to an already long movie).

Also cant say I'm totally stock anymore - got an FR500 Steering wheel too.

Kick ass man..

its funny how many hobbies we share, I'm also a home theatre geek.. I loves me my Klipsch Legend series..

I also got the Lord of the Ring extended cut ( already had the regular edition dvd) but I got the limited edition set with the book ends (statues from fellowship of the ring)

Let us know how the FR500 steering wheel feels, and how it is compared to stock.. if you do a tech write up with pictures of the removal/install, I will post it in that ghost town of a section we call tech on our site...
