What a weekend, indeed! Outstanding event, and I'm sorry to say I've not been able to make prior years. You can bet that this is on the schedule. After getting comfortable with the track layout, I had a blast. Mr Groth worked the hell out of me, but that's alright, I got even.....

I think combining the AV8SS with the event was a great idea. Created a nice breather between sessions, some really cool race cars, and catch up time with alot of folks I haven't seen for a while.

Great job, John, Tony and everyone else that made this happen.

Yeap, once again a great event with a great organizer. (John )

I didn't participate in the event but Jimmy and I still had a great time watching the action and getting to see everybody again.

And of course, Jimmy enjoyed the parade laps on Sunday.

(where's the pictures?)

Steve,

You forgot to mention that you got passed by my 94 Slowbra...

Yes John did do an excellent job!

It was a blast but the best part was that the 94 did much better then last year. The first thing I did today was pick up a copy of 5.0 to see what goodies I'll be adding for more umph for next year. Don, you ready??

Tony

Ah, yes, that. Can I blame it on me being on street tires? I wish I had the camera in for that session. I've been so absent minded lately, I didn't want to forget to have the camera in Brian's car, so I put it in his car first thing so I wouldn't forget. Don't forget, I was right there with ya after pointing you by.

CMP / a Class Act

Thanks to the organizers and instructors. This was a well run event. Chris my instructor felt that I would benefit from riding with him in a new C-6 Vette so he could show me the line. "Could you show me again?". I had some transmission temp issues as the gage was off the scale and my tires got way too hot but I did finally get some of the corners down. See you all next year. Rick and Jayne, I'm comming back to 411 for a re-match.

I would like to thank some people for helping out this weekend.

Jeff Finkelstein- tech
Wolfgang Robinson(non-member)- tech
Thank you both for jumping in and helping out. Jeff and Wolfgang also instructed at the event. I'd say they had a busy weekend.

Thanks to Tony Sorrentino for making this club work. We put a lot of time into this event and had a blast doing it.

Thanks to all the instructors. We had another great group this year.

Thanks to Ronn Hale for doing the classroom instruction. I heard a lot of great comments from the students about the classroom sessions.

The entire staff at CMP was amazing again this year.

Janice Bolton for helping Tony with registration at the Jameson.

Thanks to all of you for stepping up.

Wanted to get some video up. My other partition on this computer crashed, and I don't have the .wmv codecs fixed yet, so the file is a bit large. This is me running a lap with sammy.

http://69.73.156.222/movies/sammytim05.avi

ok here is me running with mike's z06 (huge file 100 mb)

http://69.73.156.222/movies/miketim05.avi

Note: mike was a bit faster than me.

I am making some more video now and will post later.

Janice and I had a great time at CMP. Thanks to all that made it happen. Big Blue (our True Blue F-150 STX) got us and the Cobra safely back to Michigan. The toughest part of the trip was not pulling the trailer and Cobra over the mountains in NC, TN and KY; it was having to put it in 4 wheel drive to get through the snow in our back yard to get everything put away in the barn! Our sun burned faces, bug splattered windshield and apple blossom petals stuck to the truck certainly look out of place here where winter has yet to release its grip. It was great to see you all and enjoy our high octane spring break.

I'm ready for whatever you do Tony. I'll have power steering next year...and a good alignment...among other things.

Thanks for doing a great job all weekend. Had a great time.

The vette is headed to Phoenix on Saturday to be finished. I was going to wait for July but WTF. After race school next week I will be ready... I will let you know how it goes.

Thumbs up

Many thanks to everyone that made CMP a BLAST for me this year!!!!

It took me all day Saturday to feel comfortable with the track (again). Sunday I maintained some consistency (Thanks Mark V. for your help on track) and was signed off to go solo. I was looking foward to running all group 2 sessions on Sunday but gained an education on brake pads and wheel studs and a reminder of how awesome you guys are.

While checking tire pressures Sunday afternoon, I glanced down at the front brake pads. I saw about 1/8 inch of pad left, bled the brakes and was ready to go. Man I felt good. I took Ron's suggestion and experimented with harder braking. That took me to new speeds and I actually found myself changing lines and braking points to compensate- in the past it took me a few 'mistakes' to realize I need different turn in and braking points. I even shifted out of a turn without loosing the back end. It felt good!!! I take my cool down lap - end of session came to quickly My first solo session of the weekend, I stayed on track and had a awesome time! I was ready for the last session. Checking tire pressures again I let out about a pound to experiment and glanced again at the front pads. I didn't see much there. But I didn't get a good look and besides the pads were only ~6 months old. They were fine, right? I borrowed a jack and lug wrench (yet again- thanks Burke) and took off the right side front to have a closer look. To my amazement, the pad was 'almost totally' gone. I thought I better not go out on track one more time and instead make sure I could get home. I change tires, pack up and head home. "Unhappy" (understatement) as I was I said my good-byes and headed home. As I turn out of CMP, top down, trying to enjoy the ride to forget about missing the last session, I hear a bunch of crickets. Nope, no crickets, retaining clips. It's almost 5pm and I had back to the track hoping to find someone with pads. Jeff came to the rescue with a new set of pads and helped me change them. Jeff you're awesome dude! We had help from Robby and Tony (thanks). And somebody's wife helped bleed the brakes- thanks! I needed the help because I broke a wheel stud, got the jack stuck under the car (don't ask ) and got my new white CMP shirt all brake dusty. Lesson learned- 'premium' brake pads from Carquest does not mean premium performance on track! I melted those suckers...

I also learned that an off caster setting causes uneven tire wear and... well I could easily spend $1000 to improve the car- maybe it's time for a coupe for the track. My wife just says, shaking her head, expensive hobby.

Signed: an AV8SS wannabe
(that racing was awesome!- hey John "let's go racin' boyz")

Hey guys just wanted to say Im still tring to remove the permanent smile on my face, I had a large time as did my friends who made the trip with me from East Tenn. The trip was smooth and we only broke 1 car out of our group.

The SVT and CMP personel did a yeomans job in making this event run smooth and safe for eveyone IMO. The only problem I could come up with was that the classes didnt allow ANY time for "adjustments" I felt rushed, like the old run- to my- car starts from races of yesteryear. Other than the wind and the time management or lack of I had a great time and will be back for sure, my Cobra did great and I did a bang up job if I dont say so myself.

The only question I have If someone can answer it for me is, How do I get moved to group 3? My instructor was signing me off for SOLO when I told him I was pulling out a little early. What does this mean for me and my next visit?

Thanks

Shawn

Glad you made it out to the event Shawn. It was nice putting a face with a name and BB alias. You would probably have to have a little more track time in order to get to group three. You will most likely go to group 2 and have an instructor for the first of the morning to get you familiarized with the track again and then you'd be turned loose to go on your own.

We're glad you had a blast! It was a great event for everyone. As far as getting moved to group 3, if it was your first or 2nd event, you will probably need a few more weekends. Moving you to "solo" is more of a "head check" thing for most guys. You can then take a couple of sessions to realize what you are/aren't doing wrong on the track. You learn a ton from instructors. If they won't talk, then ask them questions about things. You are paying for their services, and believe me, every instructor has different input regarding a different corner at CMP. You simply take all that criticism and mold it to work with your car and your style of driving. It's all in the learning process. I'm a group 3 driver, and I enjoy having an instructor hop in the car with me if they have a minute. You can always learn things from another driver. The last session of the day on Sunday, I learned a "little" different line through the carousel that shaved 1 second off of my lap time. Each little bit is progress. That's what's cool about this sport!
