Read this and maybe you'll feel the same way I do....we will need some sort of corner workers or flags for this event!

Corner Workers

Tony:

I agree that we need corner workers and communication to run a safe, fun event. We might be able to get flags, etc from the Alabama SCCA. If not I can provide radios, if needed. If we have 30 cars, we could run three groups
and always have about 10 corner workers. If someone spins you need to be able to red flag the field.

Allen,

Most clubs run here without corner workers since it is a flat surface and you can see clear across the track. However, we are not most clubs and we'll probably get 4 or 5 workers at the event. We'll limit the event to 48 - 50 cars with 4 run groups of 12. This will enable us to generate some extra $$ for our own flags and radios and we can use them for the next time or maybe just purchase them once we have the event confirmed 100% in September.

It will be a lot of fun no matter how you look at it. I'm trying to ease my way in to getting that Friday off at work so I can get down there early. It's a 5 hour drive for me. Problem is, I have had so many Fridays off that I wouldn't be surprised if they vetoed this day off for me. If that happens, I'll have to take a different course of action.

Can't wait to get back together on the track again!

Just a good helmet and an open mind. I'm assuming this will be your first open track event? You don't need a roll bar since you have a coupe. Once we get the date confirmed, then we'll have an event packet for you to use as a guide line.

Not to put any pressure on you, but if your tentative date moves up a week, I may be able to make it. You'll finally get a chance to beat the SSLED.

If it is the last week of October or the 1st week on November, I'm out. I have previous racing plans.

Terry,

The Porsche club will be there the week before. They start repaving the track the first week in November. That was the only weekend I could get that would fit into our schedule. We have a drag day the week after and a Charleston Ghost Tour the week before. Wish I could change it for you buddy.

That's OK; I like spanking Porsches too. The open headered SSLED seems to offend the Grey Poupon crowd a little. They must have sensitive ears.

That's OK. I understand. Never hurts to ask, though. Being out of town 3 weeks in a row for racing might be tough to pull off with the Misses anyway. I will try to make CMP next Spring, though.

Tony,
Long time no see/speak/race...

I've run this track twice in the last year and a half and had plenty of fun. If I may offer some unsolicited advice and observations...

The track is flat, and you can see the whole track from the pits / flag stand. While on track, you will not be able to keep an eye on the whole track. You will loose sight of portions of the track due to slight elevation changes...and of course tunnel vision.

Both times I've run at TGP, we had no more than 20 cars. We limited the track to 4 or 5 cars at a time, and everyone ran plenty of laps...brakes (or should I say the overheating of brakes) limited track time more than the number of drivers. It might be possible to run more cars safely, but I think you will have some cars waiting in line to pass others with 10 cars on the track...The straights are not long enough to get more than 3 cars past safely (IMHO) during a track event.

Track in from the pits: You will definately want a worker here to control entry to track. With the track running clockwise, you are entering the track from the left, and you are put directly into the line for the entry of the skid pad corner...not a place to step out in front of another car that's going 85mph.

Corner workers: I would not use corner workers at TGP. There is just not enough room for workers to hang out in a safe place. Besides, access to the whole track is very straight forward from the pits, and should there be a BIG off track event, a corner worker isn't going to be there any faster. If you are trying to provide some warning to drivers to slow down etc, I would consider radio, and the flag stand. Again, just my personal opinion.

If I can, I'd love to join you guys there. I'll run if I can, but just to see some old SCMC friends will be nice also...I may just have to spank you with my LX5.0!

Later,

Channing

Channing,

It is soooooooo good to hear from you. I talked to Joey one day and he said you had a 5 liter Mustang. Who knows??? Maybe we'll get you back in a Snake soon...

Thanks for all the advice Channing; I just called David at TGP and he confirmed we could have the track on October 29th because they put off the construction for 6 months. I told him we may want it for two days so I'll need to know from everyone here if they would definitely go to a two day event?

It looks like 7 cars is a better number so we'll probably have to limit the run groups to 35 cars or 5 groups of 7. I'm not looking at this event as a "driving school" since most of us have run on the track. Also, it will cost more for 2 days obviously. I saw where the GA Mustang club was charging $150.00 per day for non MCA members and $125.00 per day for MCA members. I'm going to do some checking with the insurance cost but with 35 people, we may have to do a tad higher then $100.00 a day but not more then $125.00 a day.
What did you pay to go Channing?

If finances are good then we can do a Saturday night pizza party for all the participants.

David said we would need the following:

1. Pit out person
2. Pit in person
3. Gate person all day
4. 3 observers on the track
5. Tech person (Rick McNutt and Jayne)
6. Registration person (Tony Sorrentino)

Of course you are most welcome to come and join in and I'll be bringing the 94 so you can feel competitive out there. Maybe you can call around and get us a good hotel that is relatively new and inexpensive? Can't wait to see ya again!

Final words to everyone on this thread that is 100% attending...One day or two? Please post your reply here, thanks!
