Chance to race a gto but he backed out.

I went to see a friend whom I have not seen in two yrs. Brother in law and son show up. He asked me if I would race a gto and I said no problem. Well my friend has one and only races for money ($500.00). I guess his gto is supposed to be the fastest car in town I told him give him a call, Well all was well until he told him what he was going to race and then backed out. I'm guessing he already tried a Cobra with out success or his car isn't the fastest in town.

Yeah, we've got a couple GTO's around here that need to be cut down a notch. One race and they don't talk much no more

I guess the best part is that he backed out over the phone. The safest race I ever had. I don't go looking for them but they seem to show up alot now that I have this new Cobra is this typical seems to me it is. I usually just try and let the person go I don't need the tickets or the possibilty of killing someone trying to prove something. I enjoy the car and what it is capable of and I respect the power it has.

I agree. I've raced a few times on the street, but usually don't street race. I can't afford to have a ticket or my insurance going through the roof. I'll race anyone at the track though no matter win or lose, it's all in fun for me

It is hard to avoid those who are willing to risk more than just pride on the street. I like your attitude on the subject Ever since I started racing at the drag strip, I had no interest in playing on the public streets. I may have done so on the highway but not from a dead stop. Considering the GTO issue, I lost one at 175 mph and he or she could not keep up however the driver of the GTO did pass me after I slowed down to the speed limit (probably not a good thing since they were still moving at speed and if they were drinking or drunk that could have been a disaster). Another thing I like about the drag strip is that they have strict rules on alcohol which is banned. You have no idea what you will find out on the street. The main important concept is that you will not loose your license or your car if you drag race at the track, on the street they can take both from you if you are caught. That is probably what that cop was attempting to do was to steal my car from me by accusing me of illegally drag racing on the street when all I did was slow down for a speed trap from 43mph to 35mph (speed limit was 40mph ) long story that was already told. I still have alot of reserved words for that incident.

As far as street legal drag racing ( sometimes referred to as grudge match at some tracks) that is one great means of having fun without the issues. It is very addictive and hard to stay away from the track once you have done it. Some drivers do have an attidude and to them it is all or nothing and they take loosing very hard. When my friend in the stands told loosers buddy that I do not care if I win or loose to the other driver since I am racing agianst my own time (past history of ET's) he got really upset. So there are those who have ego attacks, but other than that I have fun every time I go to the track.

Well said Ausie. I'll admit that when I was younger and "10 feet tall and bullet proof", I did my share of street racing. But that was some 40 odd years ago and grandpa is a lot more subdued now. It only takes one time to really mess up the rest of your or another one's life.

Have fun, enjoy your cars, but please be careful. Enough "fatherly" advise. I'll shut up now.

Larry that is good advise and should be the first thing that runs through your mind when you get a temptation that pulls up along side when you are waiting for that traffic light to change. Should I , could I, would I, may be followed by "I am so sorry" or "it will not happen again Officer". I may keep up with traffic (depending where I am or what road I am on) like the PA turnpike for instance, when the average speed in the slow lane is 80mph but that is a highway with limited access for other traffic. On occasion I may wind up the car on the highway but not for any extended period of time. As for the local streets, the speed limit is just fine for me. It is possible to still have fun driving and not become a menace to others. At the track, totally different story all on its own.
