tire size to rims

hey, I am looking at different rims. What size tires go on say 17" FR500's? I have 245/45/17 now, but some websites say that I would need a 275/40/17. That seems big for a front tire.

Front Nitto 555

275's fit fine on the front, they come right to the edge of the car. As far as what *can* go on the rim, pick your tire and visit the MFG's web site. They will have a chart that lists the wheel ranges that each size of a specific tire is rated for. Looking at the BFG KDW info just for a reference - on a 17x9 rim the following tires are recommended:

235x40
235x45
245x40
245x45
255x40
255x45
275x40

Out of those, the 245x45 (OEM size) and 275x40 share the same overall wheel/tire size. Any other size may need an adjustment to correct the speedometer.
