Question from new guy in Ca

Hi,

I am new to this forum and I was hoping to get some advice on the purchase of a Mustang Cobra. My wife has recently been interested in purchasing a Mustang convertible as a 2nd car, since she still needs to keep her SUV. I was hoping to find a 2001 Cobra convertible for her, so that I can have some fun driving it as well.

Anything specific to this model that I need to look out for?
What might I expect to pay for a clean 2001 conv Cobra with between 40k to 70 miles?

Thanks
Mark

welcome

your question is fine where it is.

I would check autotrader for your area, to see what the going price is for the 01 vert. I would guess anywhere from $12,000 to 16,000. I have not heard any bad things about the 01 Cobras. There were several nice colors offered on the 01 Cobras.

Zinc Yellow Convertibles 316
Laser Red Convertibles 548
Performance Red Convertibles 130
True Blue Convertibles 292
Mineral Grey Convertibles 382
Black Convertibles 942
Silver Convertibles 431
White Convertibles 343
Total Convertibles: 3,384

Thanks for the info. The one I am looking at is Mineral Grey. They are asking $14,000.

run a carfax on it. I would go purchase a unlimited carfax account. It will help you determine if you want to buy a particular car. the unlimited account lets you run carfax's for a month. It helped me when buying my daily driver.

$14000 sounds good, how many miles?

The car has 53,000 miles. I do have the carfax on it. It has had two previous owners. It is at a small used car dealer and has been for sale for at least a month. It seems to be in very good shape and mostly stock. Some of the interior plastic has been changed. Since the color of Mineral Grey is not my wifes first choice, she has continued to look at other cars including regular GT convertibles. It's me that keeps trying to find a Cobra that she would like.

White and red are her two favorite colors. I can't remember a car that she has owned it the last 15 years or so that was any other color.

that Performance Red is a great color. It is the color they used on the 2000 R Cobras

Laser Red is also a good color, why don't you like the 94 - 98 model years? Any particular reason for the 01?

The 2001 Cobra had a lot of fixes that the 99 lacked but they did have a detonation problem so you need to check and see before you buy it to put it at WOT and see if it spark knocks.

Other than the different colors then the 99 Cobras, the 2001 came fixed with all of the problems that the 99's had. If it were me, I'd look for a 97 Rio Red convertible with a tan top but then that's just me.

Good luck with your search!

now, a 97 Rio Red vert would be nice. I am biased towards the 94-98 models. I think the 97's have the best looking hood.

2001 Cobra

Cobrabitn,

She likes the body style of the 1999-2004 and really likes the 05-09. As far as the 01, she also likes the two toned seats. If we found a clean 94-98 we would consider it, but chances are the miles would be too high. Thanks

I've seen that body style with less then the mileage on the 01 you are considering, look at Craig's list and autotrader.com.

A belated welcome to our forums Mark.

I would try to stick with finding a Cobra. I think in the long run you and she both would be much happier with it. It may take a more time to find a color she likes, but the difference in the GT and the Cobra will be worth the wait.

Your location, part of the country/state will have some impact on the price so, keep that in mind too.

Good luck, and be sure to post pictures once you buy one.

Other Cobra Conv

We also found a blue 1998 Cobra conv, with 48,000 miles on it but the guy originally wanted $13,500. Now he has it on consignment at a small local car lot, but the price went up to $14,900. It seems like the 2001 is a much better deal at $13.900
