Fog lights on without headlights?!!
I have seen some cobra's rolling around, and some member's cars photos with just the foglights on, or foglights/parking lights. is this a simple re-wiring job? Anyone know a good tech article on it or know how to do it? thanks!

Works that way from the factory, on my 99. Either the headlights or parking lights need to be on first.

Yup I did mine from that. Just be veeeery careful when pulling out the switch. Push in the prongs on the outside or you'll break it like I did.

Even though I know this post is over a year old, I couldn't help but add a quick note to it.
I chose to use the other version that DIDN'T mess with the clips...less stuff to break! It's a MUCH better move which seems less confusing, not to mention easier to do. http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/fog2.htm I looked up the directions on the above listed website, and read over them carefully. I've got a pretty good working knowledge of electronics as well, and found that there is a MUCH simpiler way to go about all the splicing. Instead of using the mentioned "butt" splice, I found it MUCH easier to use something called a "U-splice" or "Scotch-lock". Avialable at just about any hardware store (in the same section as a butt splice), it allows for you to simply splice into the 12V accessory power without even having to cut it from convertible harness. This means that there is alot less confusing cutting and splicing to do with the convertible harness wires. Simply cut the red/black wire from the fog harness about 2 inches from the harness ittself, thread that wire fully into the blocked end of the U-splice until it hits the end. On the other side of the U-splice, simply run the purple/orange completely through the "fully open" side of the splice. With both wires in the correct place, assure they stay where put, and mash the metal clip down. This does ALL the splicing itself, and also means that you don't have to clear the sheath off of either wire. Simply close the splice clip and you're ALL done! Granted you still have to cap the other end of the red/black wire, but all of the splicing work is completely fail-safe! Curious as to what one of these "scotch-locks" look like? Here's the VERY illistration I learned of it from. Go down to step #7 to get a visual. Granted that this mod is designed for the Ford Probe, the compatibilty of a Stotch-Lock is universal...this is just for example purposes: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/5335/foglamps.htm If anyone has any questions, let me know. I'd have to say that this mod is one of my very favorite to add to any car, and looks stunningly sweet on the Cobra at twilight! Last but not least, thanx goes to Mustang World for posting the listed wires to work with, taking ALL the guesswork and time consuming parts of this project out. |

Ok....here's a question...would that work for a Excursion also? i know the wires are located in a total different area but i wonder if that would work?

I gaurantee it would work on an Excusrion, as it would on any vehicle. HOWEVER, the only catch to it all is where you're accessory 12V wire is located. If the fog light wire isn't ran beside any other wires, you could always run another wire all the way up through the interior deck. While that does create ALOT more work, it is still almost gauranteed to work.
You do, as stated, have to remember that wires and colors are going to more then likely be completely different. You could always just pick up a wiring manual for your excursion at an auto store, or simply test each wire to see which one provides power when turned on into the "accessory" position. Also, you'd have to figure which is the correct wire coming off of the fog light harness. It's generally the exact same process that we took here, except a different car and setting. I know, because i've also did this EXACT same mod on my 1997 Ford Probe. It was slightly different and all, but the general idea of operation was the exact same.

What good are those fog lights anyway. Seems like a good waste of electricity to me.

![]() It's not like you're paying an electric bill for the extra voltage sent to fog lights....
