New best at Rockingham.
Been awhile since I last posted. Looks like the site has picked up some. I installed a 6# lower on my buddies 03 last Thursday and finished up Friday morning. We went to Rockingham for Saturday test/tune. There were less than 40 cars running. I've always been able to beat Mark's 03. There were a few F-bodies and a couple running low 12's and were attracting some attention. I told Mark I'd go run. I hit the dump valve in second and blew the run. Mark said an SS owner that was running low 12's really started knocking my car when I pulled through the gates and when I ran a 13.2 he laughed and said the 03's were over rated. He said he could beat me by 10 cars. He was smoking one of those skinny cigars. I got my time slip and I had my 60 ft best ever and that's saying something since it was Rockingham that is usually very slick. I replaced my 4.10's with Moser 3.90's so I was pretty happy about that. I pulled right back up to the line. I launched good and hit every gear. mark said when my times posted the SS owner coughed and choked out his cigar. he said he cussed and walked off. I thought I had a good run and when I got my time slip I ran a 11.545@121.2 with a 1.594 60 ft. I parked the car. I wished I had ran a few more passes. I loaned my tires to a boy with a ranger with a 302. He ran a few low 13's until his differential exploded. I ended up selling him the tires/wheels.
Mark is still learning. He started running low 12's. Then he hit an 11.8 running the SS and sent him packing. Then he started nailing 11.60's. Then out of nowhere he ran 11.312@120.7 with a 1.650 60 ft on 315 BFG DR's. I run 26x10.5x16 ET's. I found a company that sells wheels especially skinnies for newer Cobras without modifying the car or using spacers. Looks like I may buy a set. I have heard skinnies net 2-3 tenths in the 1/4. www.bogartracingwheels.com

Sorry I didn't post back. I haven't visited in awhile. I run 26 inch tall ET Streets. The gear change is debateable. Some say the 3.55's are enough. My buddy ran the same day. He's making way more power than I and he ran an 11.31 on one pass out of 20 passes that day. He was running a lot of 11.60 passes. I only ran two passes. I blew the first one hitting the dump valve. There were few cars running so I came around and lined right back up. There is no doubt in my mind if I had made a couple more passes I would have been 11.4's or maybe 11.30's cough, cough. I still think if you are under 500 rwhp (amazing aint it to talk about that much power) a lower gear can help. Rockingham is the slickest track I have ever ran at. I should be able to run very low 11's on a good hooking track. I've since installed a set of skinnies and I improved almost 3 mph on my local 1/8 last Saturday on a run of 99.3 mph. I'll hit over 100 on another track that hooks really well where I run my best ET's. I can not wait to get on a 1/4. I also am junling the JDM CAI since it was almost dead last in 5.0 mags CAI shootout. It actually lost torque and my car has been low on torque compared to other similar modded cars. Here are a few pics of my 03 on skinnies and MT's.

Great times. Whats your secret for getting off the line? Are you running a solid axle? GOOD LUCK

Hey Shannon,
I'll probably be moving sometime this summer. The company I work for is closing up this plant and I turned down offers to go to one of three plants. Looks like I'll be in middle Alabama or W. Texas pretty soon. Did the guy you got the shifter knob for like it? BossCobra, I guess I may be lucky. I had a lot of practise learning how to slip the clutch and feather the throttle on the 99 and 01 Cobras I owned. Sticky tires eliminate the wheel hop. I have the IRS with Motive 3.90's. I think the lower gear translates the power better to the ground and reduces wind up. I launch around 4.5-5K and slip the clutch slightly. My best 60 ft has been 1.595 in February. I haven't broken anything and I have the stock clutch. I have close to 150 passes with about 100 on 1/8 tracks. I did noticed when I replaced my 4.10 gears with the 3.90's that the top bushings on my differential were in bad shape due to the torque applied during launches. I'm going to make some out of nylon and replace them. We ran at Rockingham this past Friday night and I had hoped the skinnies would help me and they did slightly but I was a little disappointed especially since the weather was so good. It was really cool and there was even a tail wind. I knocked off a measly .02 off my best ET to 11.52 and improved 1.1 mph on my trap to 122.3 with a 1.597 60 ft. Rockingham seems to hook off the line but I suffer the first 1/8. My speed at the 1/8 mark was 96 mph. I clocked 99.3 at Wilkesboro two weekends ago. If I could get 99 on a 1/4 I should be close to 125 at the line. I'm going to try to go to Darlington soon and then try Fayetteville Dragway. I want to run 11.30's real bad. But, I remember when I wanted to just break 11's. It' a progression. I don't think Rockingham is a track you can run your best. My buddy Mark just swapped out his IRS with a solid and he ran a 11.41 compared tot he 11.31 he ran in Feb with the IRS. I'm sure he'll take time to learn the new rear. |
