Junkyard parts
I just got my new issue of Grassroots Motorsports and the Junkyard article got my creative juices flowing. How does one *easily* go about finding parts through junkyards? Are there any good websites? Is the best method to just call local places?

I'm sure it was the "article" that got your juices flowing.
Never really done a serious search for parts at a junkyard, but when searching with a friend (rshelbygt) one time we found a hurst shifter on a Mustang that the guy that owned the junkyard didn't even know about. You may be able to find some valuable pieces if you take the time to walk through the yards and inspect things for yourself. Imagine what could be in there that a non Mustang guy wouldn't know about and probably couldn't tell if it was worth anything.

I figured that actually going to a junkyard would be the easiest way to find deals. Like you said, they may have something that they don't have any expertise about Dave

Back in the "good old days" (boy, I'm dating myself) junkyards used to be everywhere! It was a gas spending a Saturday morning or afternoon at the junkyard.
Now, you have to drive 15 miles to find one. And now they're too good to be called junkyards anymore! They are SALVAGE yards. We must be politically correct!! The stuff you can find is amazing and fun. Aaaaahh yes, the good old days!!

I remember the time I needed a single bushing for the upper control arm for my Chevelle. Parts stores only sold the entire control arm assembly. It was a Sunday and none of the junk yards were open (blue laws - anyone remember those). Lucked into a small engine repair shop with an old Nova in the back - got what I needed from that .
Moral of the story - don't limit yourself to dedicated junk yards and keep your eyes open. |

Dave - Pantyass (Pantas) will know where all the junkyards in the surronding 5 states are located. He has a junkyard/salvage auction homing device implanted in his head. I'm sure he'll chime in.

The hardest part is knowing what years/parts you want and how to identify them - not an easy task! my classic 'junkyard/auction' blunder - bought a used police car at an auction, there were two at the auction, one was clearly marked under the hood with all the necessary decals, 5.0L, yadda, yadda, yadda - the other looked much worse under the hood, no decals, engine greasy, etc. I was outbid on the clean engine one, so I bought the second one, got it home, was going to rebuild it into a 347, etc for my racecar last year - well.... when I pulled the engine, yanked the intake off and realized I had a 351 police interceptor with forged internals - I had to sit down for a beer... not once did I realize what I had until it was all torn down!!! moral of the story is: make sure you can identify what you want/need and then go lookin' |
