Heel and Toe

I have been "practicing" the heel and toe "maneuver"...
or, is it toe and heel?

anyway -- Tim recently installed aftermarket pedals in our '99 and it really made the difference.
Not at first -- we ended up putting the clutch pedal upside down (long story).....

that made the real difference -- sometimes, you just have to maneuver things your way....

Tim's awesome....

and last night I got it for the first time! granted.. not so smooth.. but its a start... I was thrilled.... but scared..

I'm actually kind of wondering why I'm even doing it....

but then again, being that there is a cop on every other street corner around here... the best thing we can do is practice the "way" we drive...... going fast is a no no.....

anyway -- anybody have any suggestions on this for me... besides "practicing"..... (don't worry, I will)....

I actually started doing this on my own before I realized exactly what I was doing. I thought that, because it was called heel and toe, that you used your heel and toe. Silly me. Maybe some people do. I realized that it was easier to do it my way with the ball and side of my foot. Then I found out that's how most people do it, it's just a misnomer. I was able to do it in my 89 Gt with stock pedals, but once I got the 96, I couldn't do it anymore. The pedals were too far apart. So, I got the Sullivan Racing pedals (which rock, BTW).
I use the ball of my right foot to brake and then roll the outside of my foot to the right and "blip" the gas to keep the revs up while I down shift. Yes, I can be very rocky at first. It will get smoother. Now I do it without thinking about it, just like up-shifting.

Jimmy, I did it like you do in the Cobra with the Momo pedals.

In the focus, however, I would have to roll my foot so far over that I would be pressing the accelerator with the top of my foot just above my pinky toe. I would kind of catch the bottom corner of the pedal.

I too have the sullivan pedals and like them. I've made heal-toe a part of my everyday driving. It freaks people out sometime when I'm coming to a turn. Like this morning, I was coming out of our neighborhood and into a lower speed turn. I heal/toed from 3rd to 2nd while some people were taking their morning walk. They looked at me like I was crazy, like they thought I was speeding or something, which I wasn't. Guess the sound of the Off road H and flows isn't such a good wake up call.

Heal toe made such a difference at the track for me. I also roll my foot. I actually had one instructor that was old school and she physically kept the her toes on the brake and turned her heel to blip the gas pedal. I've never seen anyone do it that way. It looked very uncomfortable, but I guess to each his own.

hmmmmmm....

we bought the OMP pedals,

the ones that look like a puzzle put together -- I thought those would be good and now I'm not too sure..... I think we may like the regular pedals better.

I do like the grip though and were going to put those floor inserts on as well and get rid of the original mats -- they have gotten in the way a few too many times...

a few weeks ago, I was driving with Tim and for the very first time (for me) the pedal went to the floor and I had to take it out of gear and stick my foot under there and yank it back...

we discovered that the wire had (stretched???) or (whatever) (Tim knows) and that when you would poke it real fast it would pop out and get stuck...

that was scary.... I was glad that I had my schooling background or I think I may have panicked cuz I was going pretty fast....

and, yup - Tim drives like that naturally....

sometimes, we have people struggling to get up next to us so that they can roll down their window and ask what kind of exhaust system he has (Magnaflow)

he sure does make that car sound good....

I'm only able to blip the gas pedal with my toes --

I love to drive barefoot cuz I know exactly where those pedals are...

hope I can get that good some day !!

I've been heel and toeing on every down shift (basically every turn), in every car I drive for the last 16 years or so. I really wonder how I drove any other way.

I did it in the Cobra with stock pedals, but the Sullivan's do make it easier. They also make it easier for me to catch my big clumsy foot on the side of the accelerator

A cheap alternative is to just bend the accelerator closer to the brake.

My advice: practice practice practice. And realize that when you do it on the track, do to much heavier braking forces you won't be as smooth.

A lot of you saw the result of missing a throttle blip while trail braking into a corner at MAM

Oh well, I think most of the mud is out of the car now.
