Clunking under the car
I purchased my 03 Cobra back in December 2002 and roughly have 6,000 miles on the car now. I have seen several posts about clunking under the car due to the driveline problems.
Problem: I am hearing a clunking from underneath the car but have been unable to pinpointed the exact location of the clunking sound. Occurance: The clunking only occurs when I turn on the Air Conditioning System and can be heard in any gear at any speed even idling out of gear. Has anyone else experienced this particular problem with the clunking sound when you turn on the air conditioning system. |

Clunking under the car
Oh yes, I've experienced that clunking sound as well when I turn on the A/C !! I have a small 4-cylinder car that is about 2.5 years old, and it does the same thing when you turn on the A/C. The clunk is louder if the A/c has not been used for a longer period. I thought that this was because the a/c was just getting older and being used with great strain because it was a small 4-cylinder car. Well, when i heard this noise on the Cobra, I thought, wow, that's wierd, here is a brand new car with a large V-8 and it's making the same sound. It's makes the car idle pretty rough as well when it is on. Also, I couldn't believe how much power that it took away from the engine as well when it was running !! I expect this from my small 4-cylinder, but not from the massive V-8 !! Does this sound like the problem that you are having with your a/c as well ?? By the way....read my post about what happened to my Engine last week !! It's the post labeled "Blown 03Cobra Engine". I hope that the clunking sound you are experiencing like I have, doesn't lead to the same problem that I had with the engine !!

Yup, mine clunks every time the AC compressor engages. Sounds like someone's tapping on the firewall. Doesn't bother me as long as the tunes are playin'

I believe it's a blend door... the '03 F-250's do the exact same thing. I've felt it in my Cobra as well as the F-250's

i guess i am lucky-- i seem to have none of the "common" quirks the 03 are so fond of; no clunk, no vibe (not at even over 80), no tick.

There has been discussions on Blue Oval News and Mach1registry about this noise.
And a guy over on Mach1registry said this. (Problem: A/C compressor clicking loud and accumulator thumping against firewall when A/C cycling. Fix: Regapped A/C compressor from .043 to .031 gap. Also had to reposition A/C accumulator for clunking noise against firewall. ) My 03 Mach 1 does it too. Dennis
