gears reply
Also, am I wrong in that the 4.10's and 4.30's are not that different according your #'s . Sure 4.30's are probably a little faster but how much faster. And is it going to a big, big difference at the track. Maybe a few tenths of a second? Can't you get that building a little more power, which I suppose people would say it is cheaper to get gears, but there are good and bad for both, and I am just weighing the two for myself. But I do appreciate the info on the numbers, as I am still learning on a few things.

According to those with 4.10s, you shift into 4th right before the traps, thus killing your time. 4.30s would be better for drag racing IMO.

You have to decide for yourself. I don't understand your decision criteria, because top end on these cars is not going to happen on the highway anyway.
4.30's allow you to use more of your power band in the 1/4 than 4.10's. Top end is negligible difference. Gas milage is negligible difference. Around town driving is actually easier. Granted, you have a different year Cobra and a different tranny than I do, but basically these things still hold true. Most everyone here has told you why you should do the 4.30's, but you keep arguing for the 4.10's. It's your car...put the 4.10's in and be done with it! Last thing I have to say on the subject...I've given rides to 3 people who were contemplating 4.10 gears and had ridden in Cobras with 4.10 gears. ALL 3 OF THEM installed 4.30's! 'nuff said? |

It is not as much top end as it is my lack of knowledge of 4.30's.
I can get more positive feedback than I have gotten hear lately. the only one who has been understanding about my ? 's is tcrews on the thread rearend decisions. Yours is full of knowledge but I can't help but feel that you seem perturbed at the fact that maybe I don't know as much as you do on the matter. The first time I heard about 4.30's is on the forum. I hope I can keep from making anybody upset in the future about trying to find out the best way to improve my car, " MY CAR " . I do appreciate any info I can get on the forum, and I hope maybe in the future everyone can be a little more understanding about questions I have , but thank you anyway.

Don't take it too much to heart......gear questions are the most reoccurring question on the board and the mailing list........so I think it just starts to get tiring to answer the same question over and over and over again.
The 4V engine has changed everything people always thought about gears. The high revving nature and the love of RPMs has made people with older (5.0 cars) experience give bad advice to guys with the newer engines. Powerband is higher, redline is higher.....numerically higher gears are needed. If you can find some one local with gears, see if you can get the chance to drive/ride in one with them. Do you remember the change from 3.27s to your 3.73s?? Imagine the same change again going from 3.73s to 4.30s.....

And I think I pointed out it was YOUR CAR and you needed to do what YOU felt would make YOU happy. If you're afraid of 4.30's, get the 4.10's. However, I almost would gaurantee you that a year from now you will be in the same boat you are now...contemplating yet ANOTHER gear change! You've already done one, from the 3.27's to 3.73's. If you wish to go from the 3.73's to 4.10's, then from the 4.10's to 4.30's, that is also your right. It's your car and your money. We're just trying to help you skip a step! And okay, it WASN't the last thing last time, but it is this time. Stop and think about this sentence for just a minute. THIS is real world, ok? I've given rides to 3 people who were contemplating 4.10 gears and had ridden in Cobras with 4.10 gears. ALL 3 OF THEM installed 4.30's! 'nuff said? |

As I pointed out, I was noting my lack of knowledge of the gears. I am sorry if it is a tired subject. Your info is noted. I got the picture the first time. And I admitted My not knowing of the subject first hand. I also thanked everyone for the info. What is the problem. I believe you 100 %. No need to keep beating a dead horse. I also thanked you for your info. And it does seem that you are aggrevated at this. As I said before. I did not know about the gears until I was on the forum. I am still learning the forum. If you will look at the left top of the screen it says new member to the scmc , assuming that would be the forum too. I do again apologize for my lack of know how. And I am grateful to everyone who has given me new stuff to think about. I am thankful to you as well. Just remember. Not everybody is a veteran of these cars. Isn't that what this place is for? Again, thanks anyway.

Hey Al,
Try to remember that forum and e-mail advice is not as personal as face to face so like Tom said, don't take it to heart, Okay? Ken will not steer you wrong and I don't think that he knew you were a new member but that shouldn't really make a difference anyway. We are all here to help one another and now you all have me thinking about 4:30's instead of 4:10's too. My only problem is highway traveling on long distances. I have to run long distances several times a year and I just don't know if I can deal with running 2700 rpms all day long when I am used to 2000. As a general note, let's all try to be patient with everyone that needs help. What may seem like a "no brainer" for some of us, may be a learning experience for others. We are all in this together!

Thanks for the reply, we ARE all here to help with what knowledge we might have. As far as the rpm range you are worrying about go to the rearend decisions thread under the 4.6 forum thread and look at the reply that tcrews gave me on numbers as far as rpm range mpg and mph. It was very helpful to me and gave me a new outlook on bigger gears. It shouldn't be hard to find out stuff on these cars. If it weren't for the forum, I wouldn't be able to find out some of the stuff I have here. I know a little about bolt ons, but I am still learning about the technical side, gears, cams, heads, etc... . Everyone has been helpful to me and my questions, we just have to get along with each other and remember, WE LOVE THESE CARS and the power they can have, and the fun we have with them!!! That's what it is all about.

4.10 or 4.30? your call!
Just make sure you get that 3.27 outta there. I just had the 4.10 put in last week. The Cobra daily drives sooooo much easier that stock. Then there's the green light WOT.....Oooh Yeaaaa. p.s. my defective rear tires seem to be balding prematurely, Hmmm? I suppose Rogaine won't help
