Radio buttons.

Hey, I just bought my 1997 Cobra Conv. used. It appears that the last owner had sandpaper fingers, or something. Almost all the buttons on the radio are white now. I have never seen a radio do this. I guess excess use will do that. Anyways, do y'all know if I can pop the old buttons off, and replace them, or will I have to go with a whole new unit? I want to keep this car relatively stock. Thanks for any help!

Thumbs up

Hi! No, you don't have to replace the whole unit, and the buttons do not come off. But, you can replace the face of the unit for about $65. Atleast that is what it will cost from the local Ford dealer here. Look on Ebay ( www.ebay.com ) or pick up a muscle mustangs and fast fords magazine and look through the pages for some of the restoration ads. Also, you could try 5.0 Resto which will be advertised in that mag. It seems more common to see those faces do that than people think, as mine is a 98 and the volume button is doing the same thing. Good luck and let me know how you fair on finding it. I was on Ebay about 6 months ago and saw an entire stereo system for $150 ( Mach 460 ) out of a 97 GT. Buttons looked good. Alot of people replace them to go to higher performance stereos, but I don't know why. Anyway good hunting.

thanks for your info. Yeah, I would not replace my Mach 460 unit. It kicks butt! I will look around.
