rim widening?

I just bought a 1999 Mustang GT Convertible and I was looking at aftermarket wheels. I found a set that i liked but they were only 8 inches wide and i was looking for something around 9 or 10. I was reading in a mm&ff magazine about a guy who widened his wheels to 12 inches. Is it possible to do this with any wheel and how much would it cost?

Anything is possible and it can probably be done but you will have other issues when you do this like offset for your tires to fit under the wheel well if it even fits? What kind of tires will you run on it? Scrubbing the body of the car if they are too wide, etc.... Why not get a nice set of 9 inch wheels like 01-04 SVT rims?

I was looking at the '00 Cobra R rims and they are 9.5 but then i saw the falken torque 5's and i think they are a better looking wheel but the widest they make is 8 inches. So I was just wondering if it was possible to widen the torque 5's to the same dimensions as the cobra R wheels.

You can widen any wheel you want but you will need to find a competent shop to do it correctly. I cannot help you out on the cost, sorry.

I have contemplated this myself.
There are several problems from what I can gather, I'm still researching it:

1. You have to have an extra set of wheels to be cut up in order for the "sliced out center" to be welded to the wheels you want widened, for example..if I wanted my 2 rear Cobra R's widened to 17X10, I would need to have 4 wheels total, 2 to be widened...and 2 donor wheels to be cut up.

2. There are few places out there that will do it, and even fewer that know how to do it right. There are a couple of places that have a good reputation and do quality work from what I can gather...I can't remember the name or on what forum I saw it. A quick search on SVTPerformance.com or Cornercarvers.com and you'll find it as I did.

3. The jury's still out on how safe it really is, even if done right...even more so with high torque-sticky tire drag racing situations. (Welds busting and tires coming off = not cool.)

4. It ain't gonna be cheap.

Good luck and let me know what your research turns up.

Does anyone know of any wheels for a 99 Mustang that are already around 11-12 inches?

I've never seen any...
A few 17x9.5's, maybe a 17x10 even.

But never anything that wide.

I have found a Bullitt style wheel that is 17X10.5 and that is about the biggest i have found. This would be plenty of tire for me right now but I was wondering if somewhere down the road i would need to go with a wider wheel/tire combo.
