Question anyone changed the gears in the rear end?

I had a 4:10 gears installed in my TransAM WS6 and it made an incredible low end difference. Has anyone changed the gears in their Cobra. I've spoken to several people about this and have got different opinions from every one.

some have said not too b/c of the torque on the IRS, but my guess is if you support the IRS enough, why not? I know the 4.10's make a huge low-end difference on the GT's...

The tech at ford who does my mods for me advised me not to move up to 411's. Said the IRS would wouldn't fair well for all the street driving i do. Reccomended 373's. Said I'd still get good bottom end. I hope this helps.

A set of 3.90's are about as agressive as you'd want to go with the '03s. Most keep the 3.55's though.

I have rode in a 4.10 geared car. The owner and i both thought it was to much gear for the car. He is changing to 3.73's soon. The car felt like it lost some power by not letting the supercharger work because of the quicker rise in rpm's.

I changed the stock 3.27 out for 3.55 in my 99 Supercharged Cobra. This was done about the same time I put the 6-speed tranny in. I have the same drivetrain as the 03-04's and it's a great combination for me. I spend only a couple of days a year at the drag strip, so higher gear ratio than 3.55 is ridiculous for me. I drive the car every day, road race it much more than drags.

I did notice though at Gingerman, I always seemed to be unable to use the top rpm's to my advantage, with most of the long runs needing a gear change near the end of the straght. I guess this is why the pro racers have several gear ratios they can choose from to best match the track they are running on.

4.30's in my NA 99'. If I have to do it again, I'd probably go with 4:10's. Big difference from the stock gearing.

how much should a set of gears go for? I saw a set of Ford Racing 4.10's on Summit Racing for $199. This a good price? Would the 4.10's benefit my 97? I do daily drive the car, so would that not be a good idea? Any other suggestions? Thanks guys!

go for it Mikey, you'll love the difference. $199 is about right. Install on your solid axle is less expensive than on my 99 IRS. Maybe about $200??

Check out Performance Parts, Inc in the vendors section. They have FRPP 8.8 gear sets on their website for $169.99. And I think we get a discount off of that price as well.

I just ordered a set of gears for my 94 Cobra... get them from Gene Evans Ford or Late Model Restoration for $139.00 for FRPP. Plus you get a discount from Late Model as a club member.

Gene Evans - www.gefracing.com
Late Model Restoration - www.50resto.com

Hope that helps!

You trying to make sure that you get pulled over for doing more than 2 mph over the limit next time?

I can't remember if my father-in-law put 3.73 or 4.10s in his 97 but it made big difference on the bottom end.

Rear Gears!!!

We are having 3.73's installed on our '03 as we speak . A whole slew of under-the-car stuff is going with them so it will be a couple of weeks before we can give you a "what we think" report...but will try to remember to do that. As far as price, I wouldn't pay more than $140 or so, we bought ours at UPR's set-up at FFW for $130 cash (no tax, no shipping)
